What is the NAZA documentary about?
Made by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, NAZA features 24 Israeli military insiders whose identities are obscured. The Associated Press reported that the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2026 and examines surveillance, targeting and AI in Gaza through the interviewees’ accounts. Those accounts are allegations presented in the film, not independent confirmation of every claim.
What did the IDF say about NAZA?
In a detailed response issued after the Venice premiere, the IDF said the film “presents a distorted, misleading, and disingenuous picture” of its target-planning and strike process. The military argues that the anonymous testimony focuses on early intelligence work, leaves out context about later operational, legal and command decisions, and uses editing that misrepresents events.
The IDF also said the filmmakers did not submit their allegations to it before publication and that the accounts lacked details about specific incidents. This is the military’s characterization of the film and its reporting.

How does the Guardian contest the IDF’s account?
In a response reported by the Guardian on 1 October 2026 and updated on 2 October, a spokesperson rejected the IDF’s description of the interviewees as junior personnel with knowledge limited to preliminary stages. The spokesperson said the participants included people involved in intelligence, operations and final authorization.

What does NAZA mean?
The IDF says the title refers to the Hebrew term Nezek Agavi, which it translates as “collateral damage”: incidental civilian harm from a strike on a military objective. The Atlantic also identifies that meaning while discussing the title’s effect as part of its film review.
