How does the film bring the war into an intimate story?
Rather than treating the invasion as a separate spectacle, the film lets it press on everyday choices and the couple’s sense of what their future can be. Cineuropa describes war as a slow encroachment into daily life. The Film Stage notes that much of the conflict remains off-screen, conveyed through news and sound. This indirectness can focus attention on how violence changes a relationship even when the violence itself is not shown.
That restraint is not automatically a strength. If the surrounding conflict feels too distant, the film’s private drama may seem sealed off from the public crisis it invokes. The critical disagreement is less about whether the war matters than about whether implication makes its consequences more palpable—or holds the viewer at too great a remove.

Is it worth watching?
It is a compelling choice for viewers drawn to character-centered stories that approach war through its pressure on ordinary life rather than through sustained battlefield action. The film’s strongest proposition is the collision between intimate self-definition and a society under strain. Its potential limitation follows from the same design: viewers who need close emotional access to characters or a more direct account of the conflict may find the restraint distancing.
