I Swear is a Kirk Jones biographical drama about Scottish Tourette syndrome advocate John Davidson, whose involuntary vocal tics became the center of a controversial moment at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards. The incident involved a racial slur heard during the ceremony, causing genuine harm and distress to Black attendees and viewers. It also exposed serious misunderstandings about Tourette syndrome and failures in BAFTA and BBC planning and broadcasting.
The film itself won two BAFTAs—Leading Actor for Robert Aramayo and Casting for Lauren Evans—and was nominated in five categories. In the United States, the film is available through transactional digital retailers, with Blu-ray and DVD releases reported for July 2026. UK viewers have had a Netflix option, although streaming rights vary by territory and can change.
What is I Swear about?
I Swear is a biographical drama written and directed by Kirk Jones about John Davidson, a Scottish campaigner and advocate for people with Tourette syndrome. Robert Aramayo plays Davidson, with Peter Mullan, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, and Scott Ellis Watson among the principal cast.
The story follows Davidson from his diagnosis as a teenager through difficult years in 1980s Britain and into adulthood. Its focus is not simply on the physical and vocal tics associated with Tourette syndrome, but on how other people interpret them: as deliberate rudeness, aggression, comedy, or evidence of a person’s character. The film also depicts the isolation, stigma, and practical barriers that can accompany severe symptoms.

I Swear is inspired by Davidson’s life. It is not a documentary or a literal record of every event. Davidson and Cindy Jones were among the executive producers, alongside producers Piers Tempest, Kirk Jones, and Georgia Bayliff.
The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Its runtime is commonly listed at approximately 121 minutes.
What happened to John Davidson at the 2026 BAFTAs?
The 79th EE BAFTA Film Awards took place on February 22, 2026, at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Davidson attended because his life inspired I Swear. During the ceremony, he produced several involuntary vocal tics, including profane and offensive language.
One of the tics was a racial slur heard while Sinners actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting. Other profanities were reported during speeches and an award presentation. Because the BBC broadcast was transmitted on a tape delay, viewers expected offensive language to be removed before transmission. The slur was nevertheless broadcast.
The event became controversial for two connected but distinct reasons:
- The language caused real harm. A racial slur is distressing and harmful to Black attendees and viewers, regardless of how it entered the broadcast. Tourettes Action acknowledged that impact.
- The vocalizations were involuntary symptoms. Davidson’s tics were not statements of his beliefs, intentions, or character. The backlash nevertheless led to trolling and abuse directed at Davidson and other people with Tourette syndrome.
Those facts should not be collapsed into a single explanation. Recognizing that Davidson did not intentionally choose the words does not erase their effect on people who heard them. Conversely, condemning the broadcast and the institutional failures does not justify treating involuntary symptoms as evidence of malicious intent.

Why the incident led to criticism of BAFTA and the BBC
Davidson said he was deeply mortified that viewers might interpret his tics as intentional or meaningful. Reporting indicated that he understood offensive language would be edited from the broadcast. BAFTA and the BBC had also discussed his attendance and the possibility that he might have vocal tics before the ceremony.
That advance knowledge made the incident more than a question of an unexpected live-television mistake. Critics focused on whether there were adequate safeguards for Davidson, whether event staff and presenters had clear information, and whether the BBC’s delay system was properly managed.
BAFTA apologized to those affected. Its later findings or communications acknowledged shortcomings involving accessibility, inclusion planning, event communication, and the chain of command. The BBC also apologized for broadcasting offensive language and conducted a review that identified editorial and pre-event planning failures.
The practical lesson is not that people with Tourette syndrome should be excluded from public events. It is that organizers and broadcasters need specific, informed plans when an attendee’s disability may affect a live or delayed transmission. Those plans can include clear communication with the person and their representatives, staff briefings, a defined editorial decision-maker, reliable delay procedures, and a respectful response if an involuntary symptom occurs.
Tourette syndrome does not generally mean involuntary swearing
A central misunderstanding exposed by the controversy is the assumption that Tourette syndrome is synonymous with shouting profanity. It is not.

Coprolalia—the involuntary utterance of socially inappropriate words or phrases—is a relatively specific symptom and is not present in every person with Tourette syndrome. Many people with Tourette syndrome do not swear involuntarily, and the condition should not be reduced to its most sensational symptom.
Even when coprolalia is present, a vocal tic is not a reliable expression of what a person believes or intends. It may use words that are especially distressing or contrary to the speaker’s values. That is why I Swear and the BAFTA incident should be discussed with precision: Davidson’s particular presentation is part of the story, but it is not a model for everyone with Tourette syndrome.

The two wins should not be confused with the film’s other awards-season recognition. Aramayo also received the British Independent Film Awards’ Best Lead Performance award, which was separate from his BAFTA win.
I Swear was nominated for Outstanding British Film, but it should not be described as the BAFTA winner for Best Film or Outstanding British Film. Its BAFTA wins were Leading Actor and Casting.

I Swear had already been released in the UK by StudioCanal after its 2025 festival premiere. Industry reporting identified a Netflix UK and Ireland streaming debut on March 10, 2026, and Netflix has a dedicated title page for the film.
Netflix catalogues are territory-specific and can change. UK and Ireland viewers should search Netflix directly and verify that the film is currently playable in their location. The U.S. Netflix catalogue should not be assumed to carry the title simply because the UK and Ireland catalogue does.

The BAFTA incident is directly connected to the subject of I Swear: the man whose life inspired the film experienced the same kind of involuntary symptoms that the drama seeks to portray. That connection makes the film’s award-season coverage unusually complicated.
But the controversy should not become a substitute for engaging with the film itself. The relevant questions are how accurately and sensitively the drama depicts Davidson’s experiences, how audiences understand involuntary symptoms, and whether institutions can plan responsibly for disabled participants. The broadcast failure also deserves scrutiny on its own terms, particularly because the BBC had a delay and BAFTA had advance awareness that Davidson might tic.

- FROM THE WORLD’S BEST BOSS – To the world’s best employee! Or at least to the hottest in the office, worst salesman of the year, or bushiest beaver.
- PERFECT PRESENT – Give the best to the best. Whether it’s from a Jim Halpert to a Pam Beesly or from one fan to another, this fun gift is great for Christmas, a birthday, Hanukkah, a work anniversary, or to the best Dundies host.
- OFF THE SHOW – For the best souvenirs from the best shows, look to Off The Show. Watching The Office US TV show was a wonderful experience; now you can live it! (Or the part where people get Dundies, at least)
A responsible discussion can hold all of those points at once: the racial harm was real, Davidson’s vocalizations were involuntary, people with Tourette syndrome should not be stereotyped, and BAFTA and the BBC were accountable for the planning and editorial failures that allowed the offensive language to reach viewers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is I Swear a documentary?
No. It is a biographical drama written and directed by Kirk Jones and inspired by the life of John Davidson. It should not be treated as a documentary or a literal account of every event in Davidson’s life.
What caused the BAFTA controversy involving I Swear?
John Davidson, whose life inspired the film, produced involuntary vocal tics during the 2026 BAFTA ceremony, including a racial slur heard while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting. The BBC broadcast the language despite its tape delay, leading to criticism of both the broadcast failure and the event’s accessibility and inclusion planning.
Does Tourette syndrome make people swear?
Not generally. Coprolalia, the involuntary use of socially inappropriate words or phrases, is a relatively specific symptom and is not present in every person with Tourette syndrome. Tics are involuntary and do not reliably express a person’s beliefs or intentions.
Where can I watch I Swear in the U.S.?
The latest supplied U.S. check listed transactional rental and purchase options through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home, with no free streaming option listed. Reported Blu-ray and DVD releases followed in July 2026. Prices and availability should be verified on the live listings.
The Bottom Line
I Swear won BAFTAs for Robert Aramayo’s leading performance and Lauren Evans’s casting, not for Best Film or Outstanding British Film. The ceremony controversy involved real racial harm, involuntary Tourette-related vocal tics, and preventable planning and broadcast failures. In the U.S., the clearest legal options are transactional digital services or the reported Blu-ray and DVD releases; UK availability has included Netflix UK and Ireland, subject to catalogue changes.
