Spoilers for the 2025 film. The killers are Stevie Ward and Ray Bronson. Stevie’s revenge is tied to Sam Cooper, the woman who died in the group’s concealed cliffside crash; Ray joins her because he wants Southport to remember its earlier murders. Ava kills Ray with a harpoon, while Stevie and Danica both survive apparent deaths. This is the ending of the 2025 legacy sequel, not the 1997 film with the same title.

Who is the killer in the 2025 film?

There are two killers: Stevie Ward and Ray Bronson. The reveal is not a single-killer twist. Stevie has personal ties to both the friends she targets and to Ray, who supported her after her father abandoned the family and helped her get clean when she became estranged from her old friends.

Stevie later met Sam Cooper through church. On the group’s July Fourth outing, a cliffside crash leaves Sam dead. Stevie recognizes her, but says nothing as the others conceal what happened. The deaths that follow are part of Stevie’s revenge for Sam.

Why does Ray help Stevie?

Ray’s motive is tied to Southport’s earlier killings. The town has suppressed that history to protect tourism, leaving the trauma experienced by Ray and Julie unacknowledged. Ray tells Ava, “I had to make them remember.”
