Clips from the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale appeared on TikTok on July 30, 2024, five days before the episode’s scheduled U.S. broadcast on Aug. 4. HBO said the clips followed an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” but did not identify the distributor.
When did the Season 2 finale leak?
Variety reported that clips surfaced on TikTok on Tuesday night, July 30, 2024, ahead of the U.S. finale’s scheduled Aug. 4 airing on HBO and Max. The gap was five days. The date was not universal: The Independent reported that Sky Atlantic was scheduled to air the finale in the UK on Aug. 5.
The leak therefore reached social media before the episode’s scheduled release in both markets, though the interval depended on the local broadcast date.
What did HBO say about the leak?
In a statement provided to ComicBook.com and TV Insider, HBO said: “We are aware that clips from the House of the Dragon season finale have surfaced across social media platforms. The clips were posted after an unintentional release from an international third-party distributor.”

That explanation names a type of source, not a company or partner. The reported statement does not establish who the distributor was, how the clips were obtained, or the exact route by which they reached TikTok.
How widely did the clips circulate?
Variety’s July 31, 2024 report said one TikTok account posted 14 videos containing roughly 30 minutes of footage. At the time of publication, Variety estimated the videos had received approximately 50,000 to 100,000 views. Those figures were a contemporaneous estimate reported by Variety, not official TikTok analytics or a complete final view count.
Variety also reported that the account was banned roughly three hours after posting and that footage had spread to X and Reddit. This describes the circulation and account status reported at the time; it is not a current update on either platform’s records or enforcement.
Had a House of the Dragon finale leaked before?
Yes. Variety reported that the Season 1 finale appeared online two days before its scheduled October 2022 airing. The Season 2 incident was reported five days before the U.S. air date in 2024. For the earlier leak, the cited report establishes that it appeared online before broadcast; it does not provide the same distributor attribution or social-platform account details reported for Season 2.

HBO’s reported explanation points to an unintentional release by an international third-party distributor, but the cited coverage does not name that distributor or document the precise access and copying path. It also does not establish a complete count of viewers or a definitive tally of every repost. Claims beyond those reported details would go further than the available evidence.
