Donald Trump’s “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” post was real, but “big mad” is an editorial characterization. The former president and 2024 Republican nominee posted the words on Truth Social on September 15, 2024—five days after Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz following their debate.

Donald Trump’s “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” post was real, but “big mad” is the headline’s humorous interpretation—not a measurable diagnosis of his state of mind. The former president and 2024 Republican nominee posted the words on Truth Social on September 15, 2024, five days after Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz following their presidential debate.

The timing made the political context unmistakable to observers, even though Trump did not explicitly say in that post that Swift’s endorsement caused his reaction. The episode became a revealing case study in the difference between celebrity attention, voter mobilization, persuasion and proof of electoral impact.

What happened between Taylor Swift and Donald Trump?

On September 10, immediately after the Harris–Trump debate, Swift published an Instagram post endorsing Kamala Harris for president and Tim Walz for vice president. She said she had researched the candidates and intended to vote for Harris, describing her as a leader who fought for rights and causes Swift believed needed defending.

Swift also encouraged her followers to research the candidates, register if necessary and vote. She directed them to Vote.gov, the federal government’s voter-information website.

Her sign-off—“Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady”—was a pointed reference to comments made by JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, about Democrats and women without children. It gave the post a distinctly political edge without turning it into a formal campaign speech.

Five days later, on September 15, Trump posted the blunt message “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” on Truth Social. Contemporary reporting by Reuters, CBS News, The Washington Post and other outlets documented the wording and date.

Trump’s post did not name Harris, mention the endorsement or explain what prompted it. The sequence of events, however, made Swift’s endorsement the obvious backdrop. It is accurate to describe the post as a direct and unusually emotional public reaction. It is not accurate to claim that Trump formally explained his motive in those words.

Why Swift made the endorsement

The endorsement did not arrive in a vacuum. In August 2024, Trump had shared AI-generated images that falsely suggested Swift or her fans supported him. Swift later said that seeing fabricated material portraying her as a Trump supporter helped persuade her to make her actual position clear.

That context matters. Swift’s September post was not merely a celebrity choosing a candidate. It was also a correction of misleading political imagery and a voter-information appeal. She told followers to make their own decisions rather than presenting her endorsement as a substitute for research.

Swift did not announce that she had joined the Harris campaign, become a campaign official or taken on a formal political role. The available evidence supports a high-profile social-media endorsement combined with an appeal to participate in the election.

The measurable effect: a huge Vote.gov traffic spike

The clearest immediate effect was not proof of vote-switching. It was attention.

The Washington Post reported that 405,999 people visited Vote.gov in the 24 hours after Swift’s endorsement through the link associated with her Instagram activity. Axios separately reported more than 337,000 visits during the first 15 hours. Those figures use different time windows, so they should not be treated as contradictory totals or casually added together.

Even the larger figure does not mean that 405,999 people registered to vote. A website visit is not the same thing as a completed registration, a ballot cast or a vote for Harris. The available evidence does not establish how many visitors registered, how many ultimately voted or how many supported the Democratic ticket.

Still, directing a massive audience to an official voter-information resource was politically meaningful. Swift converted a celebrity post into a concrete civic action: find reliable voting information and determine what steps apply to you.

Did Taylor Swift’s endorsement persuade voters?

Polling suggested that the endorsement was highly visible but not broadly persuasive in the conventional sense.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 6% of respondents said Swift’s endorsement made them more likely to vote for Harris, 13% said it made them less likely, and 81% said it made no difference. An Economist/YouGov survey similarly found that only a minority said the endorsement would make them more likely to support Harris, while more respondents said it would make them less likely or have no effect.

Those numbers do not show that Swift’s intervention was irrelevant. They show that persuasion and mobilization are different outcomes.

  • Persuasion means changing someone’s candidate preference.
  • Registration means completing the required process to become eligible to vote.
  • Turnout means actually casting a ballot.
  • Attention means getting people to seek information or discuss an election.

A celebrity endorsement may have little effect on committed voters while still encouraging sympathetic or politically disengaged people to register or vote. That is a reasonable interpretation of Swift’s Vote.gov appeal, especially because youth polling from Harvard found that peer participation and social influence were strongly associated with young adults’ stated likelihood of voting. But it remains an interpretation, not proof that Swift changed the final result.

Did Swift decide the 2024 election?

There is no evidence in the supplied polling or traffic data that Swift’s endorsement decided the election. The figures show an extraordinary burst of interest and a limited self-reported persuasion effect. They do not provide a chain of evidence from Instagram post to registration, from registration to turnout, and from turnout to a particular candidate’s victory.

That distinction is especially important when discussing celebrity politics. A viral moment can be culturally dominant without being electorally decisive. It can also have effects that are difficult to measure, such as making political participation feel more socially expected among fans or prompting people to discuss registration with friends.

The strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: Swift’s endorsement generated enormous attention, sent hundreds of thousands of people to a legitimate voting-information website, and became a prominent part of the 2024 campaign conversation. The evidence does not show that it caused millions of people to change their minds or that it determined the election.

Why Trump’s post became such a memorable political moment

Trump’s message was striking because of its simplicity. Rather than issuing a detailed criticism of Swift’s policy views, he posted a five-word declaration of personal hostility. That made the exchange easy to circulate, quote and interpret across news and social media.

It also illustrated the unusual political power of modern celebrity. Swift’s endorsement arrived just as the debate was dominating post-event coverage. Her fame pushed a candidate endorsement into a broader cultural conversation, while Trump’s response turned the endorsement itself into another news event.

But virality can obscure precision. The AI-generated “Swifties for Trump” imagery that preceded the endorsement was not authentic evidence of Swift’s support. Trump’s Truth Social post was not an explicit explanation of his motives. Vote.gov traffic was not a registration count. And polling about what people say an endorsement would do is not the same as a causal measurement of how they actually voted.

The bottom line

Trump really did write “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” on September 15, 2024, shortly after Swift endorsed Harris and Walz. The timing made the post a clear political reaction in the eyes of contemporaries, but Trump did not explicitly state that the endorsement caused his anger.

Swift’s intervention undeniably produced attention and a major surge in visits to Vote.gov. What it did not prove was mass vote-switching, mass registration or control over the election’s outcome. The most accurate description is also the most useful one: this was a highly visible collision between celebrity influence and presidential politics, with measurable mobilization signals but no demonstrated “Swift effect” large enough to settle the election.
