Roland Emmerich said in a 2024 interview that he had stopped trying to revive Stargate, describing it as a difficult property because different parties own parts of the intellectual property. He was talking about his own efforts—not declaring the franchise permanently over. The film trilogy he and Dean Devlin proposed in 2014 had already stalled, and a later, separate Amazon MGM television project had a different creative lead and a separate reported fate.
What did Roland Emmerich mean when he said, “I gave up”?
At San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, JoBlo asked Emmerich about bringing Stargate back. He replied: “The problem there is, it’s a very, very difficult IP. Different people own the IP and it’s very, very difficult to do stuff like that.” Asked if he wanted to be the person to revive it, he added: “Yeah, but I don’t want to do it, really. I gave up.” JoBlo’s interview is the source for his remarks.
The comment describes Emmerich’s willingness to keep pursuing a revival. It does not establish that every possible Stargate project was permanently abandoned, or that one rights issue alone ended all attempts.
What was the Emmerich–Devlin reboot?
Emmerich directed and co-wrote the 1994 Stargate film with Dean Devlin. In 2014, MGM announced a proposed film trilogy from the pair. It was conceived as a new beginning based on the original film, rather than a continuation of the television stories in Stargate SG-1, Atlantis or Universe. Writers Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods were hired.

Devlin explained the reboot logic at the time: “Twenty years later, we can’t really do part two. We have to start over from the beginning.” He said the aim was to reboot the series and set it up properly. The development did not reach production: GateWorld reports that Devlin called the project dead in November 2016 and later expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the script. GateWorld’s retrospective traces the proposal and its stalled development.
Was the 2014 film trilogy the only later Emmerich attempt?
No. GateWorld reports that Emmerich later made a separate television pitch and wrote a pilot script, with the studio apparently passing on that project by 2020. This was not the 2014 film trilogy. GateWorld also describes a separate Brad Wright series project being prepared for potential partners before pandemic shutdowns disrupted production. These were distinct efforts, and the available account does not establish that they failed for the same reason.

Why did rights make a revival difficult?
Emmerich’s own explanation was brief: different parties owned the intellectual property. GateWorld’s account says MGM owns the original film and television series, while Lionsgate retained home-media rights to the original movie. It also says television characters and lore may bring contractual obligations to seek input from television creators. Those details are GateWorld’s interpretation of the public rights landscape; the underlying contracts are not provided, so they should not be read as a definitive account of every approval right.
The evidence supports calling the rights landscape complicated from Emmerich’s perspective. It does not show that the complications were legally impossible to resolve, or that rights alone killed every proposed revival.

What happened to the later Amazon MGM series?
Amazon MGM later announced a different Stargate television series led by writer and showrunner Martin Gero. Its announcement listed Emmerich and Devlin as executive producers, and Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi as consulting producers. Amazon’s official franchise guide described the series as greenlit and said further production details would be announced. Gero had worked across all three television series, including Stargate: Atlantis.
A later JoBlo report, citing Variety and an unnamed person familiar with the situation, said the Gero-led series had been scrapped. The report attributed concern to whether Gero’s take would reach beyond existing fans. That is secondhand reporting, not an on-record explanation from Amazon.

The sources therefore conflict: Amazon’s guide still carries the greenlit description, while the later report says the series will not move forward. The guide should not be treated as a fresh confirmation, and the reported audience concern should not be presented as Amazon’s stated reason. The reported cancellation of Gero’s project is also separate from Emmerich’s earlier decision to stop pursuing his own revival.

What can Stargate fans conclude?
Emmerich gave up on his own attempts because he considered the property difficult to work with, in part because of divided ownership. His 2014 reboot trilogy did not get made, and his later television pitch was a separate effort. Amazon MGM subsequently announced another series, but the official guide and later cancellation report do not agree on its status. None of those facts amounts to a confirmed announcement that the Stargate franchise itself is over.
