Cast and filmmakers
Names below are based on entertainment reporting from 2024 and September 2026. None of them is a studio casting announcement.

- The disk has English audio.
- Will Smith: reported to reprise Robert Neville. In a May 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Smith said he and Jordan intended to star in and produce the project.
- Michael B. Jordan: reported as a co-star and co-producer. His character’s name and role have not been identified in the latest coverage, so fan theories about his part should be treated as unconfirmed.
- Akiva Goldsman: writer on the project and the source of the most recent on-record development comments.
- Steven Caple Jr.: reported as director in September 2026 entertainment coverage.
Smith’s 2024 interview is older background. In it he said he and Jordan had recently spent time developing the project and had “really solid ideas.” It does not describe the project’s current status.
Story direction and continuity
The sequel is reported to pick up from the alternate ending of the 2007 film rather than its theatrical ending. Radio Times has described that alternate ending as included with the film’s home-video material.

What Goldsman has said about the story
In 2023, Goldsman told Radio Times the story would begin “a few decades” after the first film. He said it would return to themes from Richard Matheson’s novel, including the idea that humanity is no longer the dominant species. He also cited The Last of Us as an inspiration for showing a post-apocalyptic world after a long gap. These are creative comments from 2023, not an official synopsis, and they may have changed since.
What is not known about the plot
No detailed plot has been released. The latest coverage does not describe settlements, family relationships, filming locations, or specific action sequences. Treat any claim about those details as unverified until an attributable source confirms it.

Release date, trailer, and filming
The September 18, 2026 coverage does not give a release date. It also does not confirm that filming has begun or provide a shooting schedule. The coverage makes no reference to an official trailer, so fan-made clips should not be presented as one.
Background: the 2007 film and Matheson’s novel
The 2007 I Am Legend starred Smith as Neville, a scientist who believes he is the last uninfected man in a New York City overrun by infected people. Radio Times reported in 2023 that the film grossed $585 million worldwide. That figure is Radio Times’ reporting, and it covers the 2007 film, not the sequel.
