Hindustani 2 Review: A Bloated, Redundant Follow-Up

Hindustani 2 revisits the corruption-fighting premise of the 1996 original. The critique: its return feels redundant, and its length makes that problem harder to ignore.

Hindustani 2—also released as Indian 2—revisits the vigilante-versus-corruption premise of the 1996 film, but the return feels less like a necessary continuation than a repetition on a much larger scale. In Nandini Ramnath’s reading for Scroll.in, the sequel’s own setup makes that redundancy clear; its considerable length only compounds the problem.

What is Hindustani 2?

Hindustani 2 is the Hindi title variant of Indian 2, S. Shankar’s 2024 sequel to Indian (1996), which was released in Hindi as Hindustani. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) also lists the title variant Bharateeyudu 2. The film is a Tamil-language action drama directed by Shankar, with Kamal Haasan returning as Senapathy. BBFC’s classification record also lists Rakul Preet Singh and Priya Bhavani Shankar among the cast. Rotten Tomatoes gives the theatrical release date as July 12, 2024, and describes the story as a man returning to India to fight corruption and injustice.

Why does the follow-up feel redundant?

The central criticism is not simply that the sequel revisits corruption as a subject. It is that the return to the original’s vigilante framework does not, in Ramnath’s assessment, make a convincing case for telling the story again. The Scroll.in review argues that the sequel’s plot establishes its own redundancy in relation to the earlier film.

That is a critical judgment, not an objective measure of whether the film has anything new to say. But it identifies the sequel’s main hurdle: a familiar premise needs a strong reason to return. When that reason does not come through, spectacle and scale cannot by themselves make the repetition feel purposeful.

Does the film’s length make the problem worse?

Yes, in this critical assessment, the film’s scale and duration intensify the sense of repetition. Runtime figures vary by listing and version, so they should be read with their source attached: the BBFC lists its Hindustani 2 cinema classification at 178 minutes 6 seconds, while its separate Indian 2 record gives 178 minutes 13 seconds. Rotten Tomatoes rounds the runtime to three hours.

Listing or version Runtime What the source establishes
Hindustani 2 cinema listing 178 minutes 6 seconds BBFC classification record dated July 11, 2024. Source
Indian 2 listing 178 minutes 13 seconds Separate BBFC title record. Source
Rotten Tomatoes listing 3 hours Rounded runtime on the film page. Source

These records do not establish one definitive runtime for every territory or presentation. The small difference between the two BBFC entries and Rotten Tomatoes’ rounded figure should not be treated as proof of a single universal cut.

Why was Indian 2 trimmed?

After audience feedback, Lyca Productions announced that 12 minutes would be removed from a cinema version. Hindustan Times reported the announcement and quoted its promotional message: “We heard you! Indian 2 is now trimmed by 12 minutes!” The report establishes that a trimmed theatrical edition was announced; it does not establish that every territory, cinema, or later platform uses that edit. Is it worth watching?

If you want to see Kamal Haasan return as Senapathy or are curious about how Shankar extends the 1996 film’s premise, the sequel offers that continuation. If you are deciding based on a tightly paced story or a genuinely necessary follow-up, Ramnath’s criticism points to the main reservation: the premise feels recycled, while the length gives that repetition room to linger.

Reception figures are a snapshot rather than a permanent verdict. When accessed on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 15% Tomatometer from 13 reviews and a 23% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings. Those figures can change as reviews and audience ratings are added, and they do not replace the more useful question of whether this particular sequel’s approach appeals to you.
