Kaafir is a ZEE5 Original drama that premiered on June 15, 2019. Dia Mirza plays Kainaaz Akhtar, a Pakistani woman imprisoned in India, and Mohit Raina plays Vedant Rathod, who takes up the cause of seeking justice for her and her daughter. The series is fiction. It was inspired by real incidents, but it is not a documentary and it does not retell a single case step by step.

The premise, as ZEE5 presents it
ZEE5’s trailer announcement calls the series a survival story set in Kashmir. It presents Kainaaz as an alleged militant and as a Pakistani woman detained in India. Vedant is described as a lawyer-cum-journalist who pursues justice for Kainaaz and her daughter (ZEE5 News trailer article). Those are the only plot points the 2019 announcements establish, so anything beyond them should be checked against the episodes themselves.
Where the story comes from
Coverage of the series links it to real events, and the way that link is described matters. Readers who arrive expecting a true-crime retelling should understand what the sources do and do not say.
A Pakistani mother and daughter in an Indian jail
ZEE5’s inspiration feature discusses a Pakistani woman and her daughter who grew up together in an Indian jail. The same article states that there was no confirmation that this specific case was the direct basis for Kaafir (ZEE5 News inspiration feature). In other words, the case is an influence the show’s makers are associated with, not a confirmed source text.

The advocate’s account of Shehnaz Akhtar’s case
A separate ZEE5 interview quotes advocate A.K. Sawhney about Shehnaz Akhtar. ZEE5 describes her case as the story behind the fictional Kainaaz, and reports that important events in the series were changed for dramatic purposes (ZEE5 News interview with A.K. Sawhney). These are Sawhney’s statements as reported by ZEE5. They are not court records, and the 2019 coverage does not independently verify the details of the case.
What “based on true events” means here
The phrase appears in coverage of the series, but it describes inspiration and adaptation, not a documentary. The drama changes key events, combines elements for storytelling, and presents a fictional Kainaaz. Readers looking for a verified account of any real case should consult court records and independent reporting rather than the series.

Who made it
Sonam Nair directed the series. Bhavani Iyer wrote it, and according to ZEE5’s 2020 interview with Nair, Iyer had written the story years before it reached the screen. In that interview Nair discussed what the web medium offers in developing characters and stories (ZEE5 News interview with Sonam Nair).
What Dia Mirza said about the project
ZEE5’s trailer coverage attributes this statement to Dia Mirza, reproduced as published: “Kaafir is my heart. Some very very special people have come together tell this special story.” The wording may reflect the transcription of the original interview.
