Hyundai’s “First Date” was a 60-second Super Bowl 50 commercial starring Kevin Hart as an overprotective father. The spot promoted the 2016 Hyundai Genesis and its Blue Link Car Finder feature, which Hart’s character uses to keep tabs on his daughter and her date. Hyundai later reported that the ad won USA TODAY’s Ad Meter, ahead of 63 other Super Bowl 50 commercials.
What happens in the commercial?
The joke hinges on a father who will not leave his daughter’s first date entirely alone. Using the Genesis’s Blue Link Car Finder feature, Hart’s character tracks the car carrying the couple and appears wherever the date takes them. Hyundai described the premise as a way to showcase vehicle technology through a comic story; it is the advertiser’s account of the creative.
Which Hyundai was featured?
The car was Hyundai’s premium 2016 Genesis sedan. The advertised technology was Blue Link Car Finder, presented in the ad as a way for Hart’s character to locate the vehicle. Hyundai’s 2016 campaign announcement identifies the model and feature: Hyundai’s Super Bowl 50 campaign announcement.
That historical description does not establish whether Car Finder is available today, which vehicles currently support it, or what its service terms are.
