The Humax AuraEZ 4K Recorder brings recording to a Freely-oriented box—but only for aerial-delivered terrestrial TV. It combines Freely’s broadband live and catch-up services with a 2TB hard drive, while Freely IP channels remain streaming-only.
The Humax AuraEZ 4K Recorder is the first Freely-focused box to make local TV recording a central part of the proposition. It combines Freely’s broadband-delivered live television and catch-up interface with a 2TB hard drive and terrestrial tuners.
There is one crucial qualification: it does not record every channel shown in Freely. The recordings come from channels received through a connected TV aerial. Freely channels delivered over the internet cannot be recorded on the AuraEZ because of content restrictions.
What the Humax AuraEZ actually does
Humax describes the AuraEZ as a 4K TV recorder with built-in Freely. It is designed to bridge two different ways of watching UK television:
- Freely over broadband: live channels, broadcaster catch-up and on-demand programming through the internet.
- Terrestrial television through an aerial: live TV and recordings handled by the box’s digital tuners.
The recorder has a 2TB hard drive, which Humax says can store up to 1,000 hours of recordings. It also has three digital tuners. With a suitable aerial connection and adequate terrestrial reception, Humax says the box can record up to four terrestrial channels simultaneously while you watch a fifth live.

That makes the AuraEZ more than a standard Freely streamer, but it does not turn Freely into a universal cloud-DVR service. The recording feature is tied to the aerial-connected terrestrial part of the box.
The recording limitation Freely buyers need to understand
If a channel reaches the AuraEZ through the aerial, it can generally be scheduled and recorded as a terrestrial broadcast channel. If it reaches the box only as an IP stream through Freely, it cannot be recorded by the AuraEZ.
In practical terms, the Freely programme guide may place different kinds of channels alongside one another, but they do not all have the same recording rights. A viewer should not assume that seeing a channel in the Freely interface means that its stream can be saved to the hard drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction matters particularly for anyone replacing an older Freeview recorder. The AuraEZ preserves the familiar local-PVR experience for aerial-delivered television, while adding Freely’s broadband content. It does not provide a recording archive for every additional channel that Freely may add in future.
Do you need an aerial?
For Freely streaming alone, no. Compatible Freely hardware can receive its broadband-delivered live and on-demand content without an aerial.

For AuraEZ recording, yes. The recording function uses the box’s terrestrial tuners, so the AuraEZ needs a working aerial connection and usable local reception. A broadband-only household can still use the streaming side of the product, but it will not get the full recording benefit without suitable terrestrial TV reception equipment.
If your home already has a functioning rooftop, loft or indoor aerial outlet, check that it delivers a stable signal to the room where the AuraEZ will be installed. If you need to add one, a suitable UK terrestrial DVB-T/T2 TV aerial is the relevant accessory—but no single indoor aerial is guaranteed to work everywhere. Building materials, transmitter distance, local terrain and signal strength all affect the result.
Freely channels, catch-up and the seven-day guide
The AuraEZ brings Freely’s unified interface together with UK broadcaster services including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Its guide supports seven days of forward listings and seven days of backward navigation, allowing viewers to find scheduled programmes and eligible recent content.
Backward guide navigation is useful, but it should not be confused with recording. When a missed programme is available, the box may direct you to the relevant broadcaster’s catch-up service. Whether it remains available depends on the broadcaster, the programme’s rights, the service, your location and the platform’s current integration. Catch-up is therefore an alternative route to some missed programmes, not a permanent replacement for a recording library.
Humax’s product information describes more than 60 live Freely channels and approximately 75,000 hours of on-demand content. Those figures are snapshots rather than permanent specifications. Freely is expanding quickly, and channel availability can change as broadcasters join, leave or alter their distribution arrangements.
Recent reporting has described Freely passing 70 live channels, with additions associated with Warner Bros. Discovery, AMC and ITV. Examples reported in that expansion include TLC, Quest, Quest Red, DMAX, Food Network, Really, The Chase, Saturday Night Every Night, Love After Lock Up, True Crime UK, Evidence of Evil, Bloodline Detectives and AMC Reality. Availability should be checked at the time of purchase because channel line-ups are liable to change.

AuraEZ versus the Manhattan Aero
The Manhattan Aero is a useful comparison because it makes a different set of compromises. It is a broadband-only Freely streamer: it does not need an aerial or satellite dish, but it cannot record live television. Manhattan says its pause function is limited to up to 15 minutes.
| Feature | Humax AuraEZ | Manhattan Aero |
|---|---|---|
| Freely access | Yes | Yes |
| Terrestrial tuner | Yes | No |
| Record aerial-delivered TV | Yes, with an aerial | No |
| Record Freely IP channels | No | No |
| Built-in storage | 2TB hard drive | No recorder storage stated |
| Major global streaming apps | Not supported as a general app platform | Includes Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and YouTube |
| Aerial needed for Freely streaming | No | No |
| Aerial needed for recording | Yes | Not applicable |
The AuraEZ is therefore not simply a newer version of the Aero. The choice is fundamentally about priorities:
- Choose the AuraEZ if you want a large local recording library from terrestrial TV and also want Freely’s live and catch-up interface.
- Choose a broadband-only Freely streamer such as the Aero if you do not want to install or maintain an aerial, cannot rely on terrestrial reception, or value Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube more than recording.
The app limitation is just as important as the recording feature
The AuraEZ is not a general-purpose Android TV or Google TV streamer. Humax says it uses Android AOSP without Google certification and does not include global OTT apps such as Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+.
Its on-demand environment is instead centred on Freely and the integrated UK broadcaster services. That may be perfectly reasonable for someone replacing a Freeview recorder, but it is a significant limitation for households hoping to consolidate every streaming subscription into one box.

Who should buy the AuraEZ?
It is a strong fit for:
- Households with a working terrestrial TV aerial.
- Viewers replacing an older Freeview recorder.
- People who want Freely’s combined live and catch-up experience without abandoning scheduled recordings.
- Families that want substantial local storage for aerial-delivered programmes.
- Buyers who do not need Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+ built into the same box.
It is a weaker fit for:
- Broadband-only homes that cannot or do not want to use an aerial.
- Anyone expecting to record Freely’s IP-delivered channels.
- Viewers seeking a full Google TV-style app catalogue.
- People who only need basic Freely streaming and have no interest in recording.
Launch price and availability
T3 reported the AuraEZ launch on 12 February 2026, with pre-orders listed at £249 from Humax and shipping expected later that month. That was the reported launch pricing, not a guaranteed current retail price.
Prices, stock, delivery dates, warranty terms and retailer availability can change. Check the current Humax and retailer listings before treating £249 as a buying figure.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm your aerial setup. Recording depends on terrestrial reception. Freely broadband access does not remove this requirement.
- Check which channels you expect to record. The key question is whether they are available through the aerial, not merely whether they appear in the Freely guide.
- Decide whether 2TB storage matters. The drive is valuable for regular recording, but unnecessary if you mainly use live streaming and catch-up.
- Audit your streaming apps. Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ are not part of the AuraEZ’s supported app environment according to Humax.
- Check current Freely availability and price. Channel counts and retail terms are moving targets.
Verdict
The Humax AuraEZ is significant because it joins Freely’s newer internet-delivered TV model to the older but still useful local PVR model. Its 2TB drive and multi-channel terrestrial recording make it a compelling option for viewers who want Freely without giving up the ability to keep programmes.

That makes it a hybrid Freely/terrestrial recorder—not a universal Freely recording box. For the right household, that distinction is the reason to buy it. For a broadband-only viewer or a buyer seeking Netflix and other global apps, a simpler Freely streamer may be the better choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Humax AuraEZ record all Freely channels?
No. The AuraEZ can record terrestrial channels received through a connected aerial, but Freely channels delivered over broadband cannot be recorded on the box.
