Hulu reportedly began enabling genuine 5.1 surround sound on Apple TV in early June 2021, alongside app version 7.26. Users described seeing “5.1” badges on selected programs and receivers identifying Dolby Digital 5.1. It was not a universal switch: activation appeared inconsistent, depended on the title and account, and was reported by users rather than announced in a formal Hulu release note.
What changed in Hulu’s Apple TV app?
Before the reports, many Apple TV users received a stereo 2.0 stream from Hulu. Their receivers could still create a surround-like presentation using Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Surround, DTS Neural:X, All Channel Stereo, or another upmixing mode. That does not mean Hulu supplied discrete multichannel audio.
The reported upgrade was different: Hulu supplied a native 5.1 soundtrack for eligible titles, and the Apple TV/audio system could identify the incoming stream as Dolby Digital 5.1. Separate center, front, and surround channels were delivered instead of being synthesized from two stereo channels.
Contemporaneous user reports appeared on June 2, 2021, with further reports on June 3–4 and broader discussion around June 10. The reports can be reviewed in the Apple TV discussion and a separate Hulu thread. This is therefore a historical 2021 rollout, not a newly verified 2026 launch.

Was Hulu version 7.26 enough?
Users associated the feature with Hulu app version 7.26, but the available reports do not prove that installing 7.26 activated 5.1 for every subscriber. Some people updated and continued to receive stereo, while others saw the feature after restarting Apple TV. Several users suspected that Hulu was enabling it server-side.
Results also differed across tvOS 14.5, 14.6, and the 14.7 beta. The beta was not established as a requirement, and the same app version could produce different results for different accounts, devices, or programs. Treat 7.26 as the app version reported alongside the rollout, not as a guarantee.

Which Apple TV models and systems were involved?
Reports included the original Apple TV 4K and the 2021 Apple TV 4K, generally on tvOS 14.5 or 14.6, with some reports from tvOS 14.7 beta users. Hulu’s current device page lists Apple TV (4th generation or later) as a supported Hulu + Live TV platform, but that confirms app compatibility—not identical 5.1 behavior on every model or every program. Was the whole Hulu catalog available in 5.1?
No. Users reported 5.1 badges on selected films and episodes, with Hulu Originals and some ABC programming mentioned more often than other material. Some seasons reportedly contained 5.1 on one episode and stereo on an adjacent episode. Premium-channel add-ons were also described as inconsistent.
Do not assume that a Hulu library title, a Hulu + Live TV channel, and an on-demand version of the same program use the same audio track. Broadcast feeds, local channels, advertisements, add-on services, rights agreements, territory, plan, and episode metadata can all differ. A device that supports multichannel audio cannot create a native 5.1 track when Hulu supplies only stereo.

How to verify genuine 5.1 on Apple TV
- Open the App Store on Apple TV, find Hulu, and install any available update.
- Confirm that the television, receiver or soundbar, HDMI connection, and ARC/eARC path support the required multichannel format.
- Choose a Hulu title that visibly carries a 5.1 badge. The badge is title metadata, so test more than one program.
- Start playback and open the title’s available audio or playback information. The exact controls vary by Hulu version and title.
- Read the receiver or soundbar’s input display. Look for Dolby Digital 5.1, AC-3 5.1, or, depending on the Apple TV and audio chain, a genuine multichannel PCM indication.
- Temporarily disable Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Surround, Neural:X, All Channel Stereo, and other upmixing modes while testing. A receiver showing “surround” alone does not prove that Hulu delivered 5.1.
- Repeat the test with a second 5.1-labeled title. One stereo episode is not evidence that the app or receiver is defective.
Apple TV audio settings: what to change—and what not to change
Start with Apple TV’s automatic audio output. In Settings > Video and Audio, the available Audio Format and Change Format options depend on the connected television or receiver. Forcing Dolby Digital can help a particular older setup, but it can also alter other content or reduce compatibility, so it should not be the default fix for a missing Hulu 5.1 signal.

Check that ARC/eARC is enabled where required, that the television is set to pass through bitstream audio when such an option exists, and that the receiver is displaying the incoming codec rather than an internally selected listening mode.

If Hulu still plays only stereo
- Manually update Hulu, then force-quit and relaunch it.
- Restart Apple TV, followed by the receiver or soundbar.
- Use a title with a visible 5.1 badge and test another episode or program.
- Check the receiver display for stereo PCM versus Dolby Digital or multichannel PCM.
- Disable receiver upmixing during the test.
- If possible, connect Apple TV directly to the AV receiver or soundbar instead of routing it through the television.
- Review HDMI ARC/eARC, passthrough, and input-assignment settings.
- Try another supported streaming device as a comparison, without assuming that a device change guarantees 5.1.
- If several clearly labeled 5.1 titles remain stereo, contact Hulu support with the Apple TV model, tvOS version, Hulu app version, title and episode, and the codec shown by the receiver.
A failure on one show is inconclusive because the reported rollout was title-dependent. Conversely, if every confirmed 5.1 title remains stereo after the signal path is verified, the problem is more likely to be account enablement, HDMI negotiation, device configuration, or Hulu’s platform implementation than that individual episode.

The Bottom Line
Hulu’s Apple TV 5.1 capability was a meaningful reported upgrade in June 2021, associated with app version 7.26, but it was neither a universal catalog conversion nor a guaranteed result of updating the app. Verify a 5.1 badge and the receiver’s incoming codec on multiple titles before changing advanced audio settings.
