There is no universal winner between Hulu and Netflix for true-crime documentaries. Netflix offers a clearly labeled true-crime documentary hub with many recognizable investigative series, while Hulu provides a dedicated True Crime collection and a smaller set of prominently surfaced examples. Your best choice depends on the specific film or series you want, whether you prefer case investigations or broader docuseries formats, how much advertising you can tolerate, and which plan features you need.

The practical method is simple: search for your exact title in your region, compare the current tier prices, then check whether downloads, 4K video, simultaneous streams, or Live TV access affect your decision. The catalog pages and prices discussed here are U.S. information checked on October 13, 2026; availability and billing can differ elsewhere and can change after publication.

Quick verdict: choose the service that has the case you want

Priority Better starting point Why
You want the broadest clearly organized true-crime browsing experience Netflix Netflix maintains a dedicated Watch True Crime Documentaries route and a True Crime Documentary Series section within its documentaries area.
You are following a Hulu-exclusive or Hulu-promoted docuseries Hulu Hulu has a dedicated True Crime collection and currently surfaces the 2026 series Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel.
You want the lowest listed U.S. monthly entry price Netflix Standard with ads The listed price is $8.99 per month, compared with $12.49 per month for Hulu (With Ads).
You want an annual standalone option Hulu Hulu lists an annual With Ads plan at $124.99; Netflix’s cited plan page lists monthly options.
You need 4K, HDR, or the most downloads Netflix Premium Netflix Premium includes 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on six supported devices at a time, and spatial audio.
You want on-demand documentaries plus eligible live news or crime channels Hulu + Live TV Hulu’s provider information lists Oxygen True Crime among eligible networks, but that is a Live TV feature, not proof that every Oxygen program is in the standalone on-demand library.

Do not treat this table as a permanent ranking. Netflix says its content varies by region and may change over time. Hulu’s collection page and in-app search are discovery tools, not a guarantee that every true-crime title remains available.

Why catalog size is not a reliable tiebreaker

Neither platform’s public genre page establishes a normalized, exhaustive count of true-crime documentaries. Netflix’s official pages list numerous films and series, but the pages are curated and regional. Hulu’s collection page confirms a dedicated genre route but does not provide a comparable inventory total. A count taken on one day would become outdated as licenses expire, new programs arrive, and regional rights differ.

That makes a title-level check more useful than asking which service has “more” true crime. A viewer seeking a missing-person investigation may reach a different answer from someone looking for a wrongful-conviction story, a police-procedural examination, or a multi-episode family-centered case. Format matters too: one service may have the exact limited series you want while the other has more individual films that do not match your preferred length or approach.

What Netflix currently offers true-crime viewers

A dedicated route for films and series

Netflix’s Watch True Crime Documentaries page describes the collection as documentary films and series that investigate real crimes. Its documentaries area also contains a “True Crime Documentary Series” section. This gives subscribers a direct way to browse by subject instead of relying only on a general search box.

Examples shown on official pages

The listed examples include Making a Murderer, American Murder: Laci Peterson, The Keepers, American Nightmare, Catching Killers, and The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann. The dedicated true-crime page also shows titles such as The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, Worst Roommate Ever, American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, and The Perfect Neighbor.

These names illustrate the range rather than establish a quality ranking. They cover serial investigations, missing-person cases, wrongful-conviction questions, high-profile murders, and social or institutional failures. Netflix’s own regional warning is important: a title visible in one country may be absent in another, and a title that is available now may leave later.

Where Netflix is especially convenient

  • Browsing by format: the documentary and documentary-series sections help you distinguish a feature-length film from a multi-episode investigation.
  • Recognizable starting points: the official pages surface well-known examples, which is useful when you want a shortlist rather than an unfiltered search result.
  • Higher-end playback options: Premium is the tier to consider if your television and connection support 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial audio.

What Hulu currently offers true-crime viewers

A genre collection with a current 2026 example

Hulu maintains a True Crime collection page and currently identifies Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel as a 2026 “Crime, Docuseries” series. That is a concrete sign that Hulu is adding or promoting true-crime documentary programming, but it is not evidence that Hulu has a larger catalog than Netflix.

Use Hulu’s discovery tools before subscribing

Hulu’s help guidance directs viewers to browse the library, check what is coming and going, and use in-app search for a particular title. Search the exact spelling of the film or series, open its program page, and confirm that the result is included with the plan you intend to buy. A result associated with a bundle, Live TV channel, add-on, or temporary promotion may not be part of the basic standalone on-demand tier.

Where Hulu may be the practical choice

  • A specific Hulu series: if the case you want is currently presented in Hulu’s True Crime collection, Hulu avoids the uncertainty of finding it through a third-party listing.
  • An annual subscription: viewers who expect to keep an ad-supported plan for a full year can compare Hulu’s listed annual price with twelve monthly payments.
  • Live television: a viewer who also wants eligible live networks may find Hulu + Live TV more useful than a standalone streaming subscription.

U.S. plan prices and what the tiers actually include

The following are the prices displayed on the U.S. plan pages used for this comparison. Hulu dates its new-subscription prices to September 23, 2026. Netflix’s page lists the figures below in U.S. dollars and notes that package or add-on billing can change what a customer sees at checkout.

Service and tier Listed price Advertising Notable features stated on the plan pages
Netflix Standard with ads $8.99/month Ads Standard-tier streaming; confirm current resolution, downloads, and device limits at checkout.
Netflix Standard $19.99/month No ads on the standard service experience Standard-tier device and video features; exact limits should be checked on the plan page when subscribing.
Netflix Premium $26.99/month No ads on the standard service experience 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on six supported devices at a time, and spatial audio.
Hulu (With Ads) $12.49/month or $124.99/year Ads Standalone on-demand Hulu plan; annual pricing applies only if you select the annual offer and meet its terms.
Hulu Premium (No Ads) $21.49/month Generally no in-program ads Downloads for select shows and movies; Hulu notes that a few programs may still play ads before and after video.

Prices are not interchangeable across markets, and a bundle or add-on can produce a different bill. Hulu says customers who subscribed earlier may see a billing-cycle price change on or after October 21, 2026. Check the final checkout screen, renewal language, taxes, and any bundle terms before paying.

Ads, interruptions, and documentary pacing

Advertising affects a true-crime documentary differently from a short comedy episode. Investigations often build tension through interviews, timelines, and evidence; interruptions can make a long chapter feel fragmented. If you watch only occasionally and want the lowest monthly cost, an ad-supported tier may be reasonable. If you watch several episodes in one sitting, prefer uninterrupted testimony, or take notes while viewing, the no-ads tier can be worth the premium.

“No ads” is not identical between services or programs. Hulu specifically says that a few shows still play ads before and after the video even on Hulu Premium. Netflix Standard with ads is an ad-supported product, so confirm the current ad limitations and whether a particular title is eligible before subscribing.

Rank #3

Plan features that matter for documentary viewers

Downloads for travel or unreliable internet

Netflix Premium states that downloads are available on six supported devices at a time. Hulu Premium includes downloads for select shows and movies, which means download eligibility is title-dependent rather than universal. If you plan to watch a particular documentary offline, open its program page and look for the download control before assuming it will work.

Resolution, HDR, and sound

Most true-crime documentaries do not require the highest video tier to understand interviews or evidence, but archival footage, courtroom photography, and night scenes can benefit from a capable display. Netflix Premium explicitly includes 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial audio. Your television, playback device, audio system, and internet connection must also support those formats; paying for a tier alone cannot create them.

Simultaneous viewing

Households should compare the number of supported devices that can stream at once on the plan page. A documentary viewer sharing an account with family may need a higher tier for concurrency even when picture quality is not a priority. Netflix’s plan descriptions include device-concurrency information; verify the current limit when you subscribe because plan rules can change.

A title-first method for deciding in five minutes

  1. Write down the exact title. Include the season or episode if the program has multiple versions or follow-up specials.
  2. Search both services while signed out or in the correct regional account. A search-engine result, an old article, or a social post can describe a license that has already expired.
  3. Open the program page. Confirm that it is a documentary or docuseries, not a scripted dramatization with a similar name.
  4. Check inclusion status. Look for wording that indicates the title is included with the standalone plan rather than requiring Live TV, an add-on, or a separate purchase.
  5. Check the date-sensitive details. If you are waiting for a new release or a title marked as leaving soon, subscribe only after confirming the current availability window.

This process answers the question that catalog pages cannot: which service can play the program you actually intend to watch in your location today?

Match the service to your true-crime preferences

If you prefer long investigative series

Start with Netflix’s documentary-series route and compare the episode count, running time, and case scope of the titles that interest you. A multi-episode investigation may require a different subscription decision from a single evening feature. Use Hulu’s collection and search in parallel if you are following a newly promoted docuseries.

If you prefer high-profile U.S. cases

Netflix’s listed examples include the Laci Peterson case, O.J. Simpson, and Gabriel Fernandez, along with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Treat those listings as starting points, not a promise that every title is available in every country.

If you prefer institutional or wrongful-conviction stories

Making a Murderer and The Keepers illustrate Netflix’s presence in long-form investigations that examine legal systems, communities, and disputed evidence. The appropriate comparison is the specific title and its current availability, not a claim that one service handles every case type better.

If you want live channels as well as documentaries

Consider Hulu’s Live TV products separately from standalone Hulu. Hulu’s provider information lists Oxygen True Crime as an eligible network, but network eligibility does not mean that every program from that channel is included in the on-demand catalog. Compare the channel package, local availability, DVR terms, and total price before choosing Live TV for a documentary-only need.

Annual-versus-monthly cost decisions

Hulu’s listed annual With Ads price is $124.99. Twelve months at the listed $12.49 monthly rate would total $149.88 before taxes, so the annual offer represents a lower nominal total for a viewer who keeps the plan for the full year. The calculation is useful only if you expect to remain subscribed, accept the annual plan’s terms, and do not need the no-ads tier.

Netflix’s cited U.S. options are monthly. That structure can be useful for a short binge: subscribe for the month in which the documentary is available, finish the series, and cancel according to the account’s billing instructions. A monthly plan is not automatically cheaper over a year; the right comparison depends on how many months you will actually watch.

Technical requirements and access checks

Hulu states that a subscriber must be in the United States, provide valid payment, use a supported device, and have an internet connection with at least 3 Mbps download speed. That minimum is a service requirement, not a guarantee of uninterrupted high-definition or 4K playback. Wi-Fi congestion, device age, and network quality can still cause buffering.

Netflix supports multiple common connected-device categories, but the exact app and format support depend on the device and plan. Before purchasing a high-resolution tier, verify that your television or streaming hardware supports the required Netflix app, HDR standard, and audio format.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming a search result proves availability: open the current in-service title page and verify the play button in your region.
  • Comparing a standalone plan with Live TV: list the products separately; a live-channel package has different costs and access rules.
  • Counting titles from curated pages: neither platform’s cited page is an exhaustive, normalized catalog, so a raw count can mislead.
  • Ignoring the ad tier: compare the actual viewing experience, not only the headline monthly price.
  • Expecting every download to work: Hulu limits downloads to select titles; confirm eligibility for the documentary you want.
  • Overlooking billing changes: Hulu notes a possible billing-cycle price change for earlier subscribers on or after October 21, 2026, while package and add-on arrangements can affect Netflix pricing.
  • Buying hardware you do not need: the decision is about subscriptions and catalogs. A supported existing device is generally the relevant requirement.

How to make the final choice

Choose Netflix when its current catalog contains the title or investigative style you want and you value a clearly organized true-crime documentary browsing route, 4K/HDR or spatial audio on Premium, or the lower listed entry price of its ad tier. Choose Hulu when the documentary you want is available there, you value the annual ad-supported option, or you also need Hulu’s broader ecosystem or eligible Live TV access.

If neither service has your first-choice title, do not subscribe based on a genre label alone. Recheck both libraries on the day you are ready to pay, confirm the correct regional account, and choose the plan whose advertising, downloads, resolution, and billing structure match how you will actually watch.
