If Hulu never gets past its logo, welcome page, sign-in screen, or activation code, first open Hulu on another device and test another streaming app on the same network. That two-minute comparison usually shows whether the fault is Hulu’s app or account, the device, the browser, the network, or a wider service interruption. Then fully close Hulu, restart the device, update Hulu and its operating system, clear local app data where available, sign in again, and reinstall only if necessary.
Identify exactly what is stuck
“Welcome screen” can describe several different failures, and each points to a different remedy.
- Logo or splash screen: Hulu starts but cannot finish loading.
- Welcome or sign-in page: The page renders, but credentials or the profile selector never appears.
- Activation-code screen: The device is waiting for an account-linking step to finish.
- Blank, black, or partially rendered page: Browser settings, extensions, graphics/DRM handling, or app data may be involved.
- Return to welcome after every restart: The authentication session may not be saving, or local data may be stale.
- Unresponsive remote and screen: Treat this as a device-level freeze, not just a Hulu problem.
Use this quick diagnosis before changing settings
| Test | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Hulu fails, but Netflix, YouTube, and other apps work | Hulu app state, account session, compatibility, or a Hulu-side issue |
| Every streaming app is slow or stuck | Network, router, DNS filtering, device, or television problem |
| Hulu works on a phone or browser but not the TV | TV/streaming-device app, firmware, storage, cache, or compatibility |
| Hulu fails on several devices using the same account | Account/session, subscription or location issue, or service-side problem |
| Only a browser is affected | Cookies, JavaScript, cached site data, extensions, browser support, or DRM configuration |
Roku recommends testing the same app on another device, testing other apps, checking the network, restarting, and checking for an interruption before assuming the individual player is defective (Roku app troubleshooting; Roku playback troubleshooting).
Fixes that apply to almost every device
1. Fully close Hulu
Returning to the home screen can leave an app suspended in memory. Use the platform’s actual app-switching or force-stop control:

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Roku: Return Home, highlight Hulu, and relaunch it. If Roku itself is frozen, use a system restart.
- Apple TV: Open the app switcher, highlight Hulu, and swipe it away.
- Fire TV: Open Hulu’s app settings and choose Force Stop.
- Android phone or tablet: Swipe Hulu away from Recent Apps, or use Settings’ Force stop command.
- iPhone or iPad: Open the app switcher and swipe Hulu away.
- Smart TVs and consoles: Exit the app completely, or restart the device when no force-close control exists.
Hulu’s dedicated instructions are at Fully close Hulu.
2. Restart the device, not just the remote
A television that enters standby may keep its app state. Use the built-in restart command where possible. On Roku, use Home → Settings → System → Power → System restart (Roku system-restart instructions). If the Power submenu is absent, continue with Roku’s next restart step. A brief power disconnect can also help, but do not factory-reset the television at this stage.
3. Check the connection and filtering
- Open another streaming app on the same device.
- Restart the router and streaming device.
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, if available.
- Temporarily test a mobile hotspot. This is a diagnostic comparison, not necessarily a permanent solution.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, custom DNS filter, Pi-hole-style blocker, or aggressive network ad blocker.
- Check whether the device says it is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet access.
Speed alone does not rule out DNS failures, packet loss, captive portals, or blocked authentication requests. Hulu’s connection guidance is at Improve your internet connection and its test guidance at Hulu speed test.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
4. Update Hulu and system software
An old app can fail after a service-side change, while old TV or player firmware can create compatibility problems. Update Hulu through the device’s app store, check for a system or firmware update, and restart after updating. On Roku, highlight Hulu on Home, press Star (*), and choose Check for Updates (Roku’s verified path). If Hulu cannot be updated, check whether the exact device is still supported at Hulu’s unsupported-device help page; support status changes, so do not infer it from age alone.

5. Reset local app data
- Fire TV: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Hulu → Force Stop, then Clear Cache. Use Clear Data only if needed; it normally signs you out.
- Android: Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage → Clear Cache. Use Clear Storage/Data only as the stronger reset.
- Roku: Roku has no conventional per-app cache-clear button. Restarting or removing and reinstalling Hulu is the practical equivalent.
- Apple TV and many smart TVs: A cache control may not exist; force-close, restart, update, or reinstall instead.
- Browser: Clear Hulu’s site data, or test a private window first.
Hulu’s general help center includes current cache and data guidance at help.hulu.com.
6. Sign out and authenticate again
If Hulu’s account menu is reachable, sign out, close Hulu, restart the device, and sign in again. For an activation code, complete the process through Hulu’s official account flow, not a third-party activation site. Confirm that the email belongs to the active subscription. If billing is handled by another provider, verify the subscription there. Do not change a working password merely because the welcome screen is frozen; reset it only for an actual login failure, lockout, or suspected compromise. See Hulu’s login and logout help.

Platform-specific remedies
Roku
- Update Hulu: Home → highlight Hulu → Star (*) → Check for Updates.
- Restart Roku: Home → Settings → System → Power → System restart.
- If loading still fails, remove Hulu: Home → highlight Hulu → Star (*) → Remove app → confirm, then reinstall it from the Roku Channel Store.
- For a “can’t run app” or storage problem, remove unused channels. Roku’s removal path and its device-specific power-disconnect guidance are documented at Roku’s storage and app-error page.
Do not look for an Android-style “clear cache” button on Roku; restart or reinstall instead.
Fire TV and Android TV/Google TV
Menu labels vary by Fire OS, Android TV, Google TV, and manufacturer. Typically open Settings → Apps (or Applications) → Hulu, choose Force Stop, then Clear Cache. Clear Data/Storage is a deeper reset that requires signing in again. Update Hulu from the platform’s app store, check for a system update, restart, and reinstall from the official store if needed.
Apple TV
Open the app switcher, swipe Hulu away, and relaunch it. Then restart Apple TV, update tvOS and Hulu, and reinstall Hulu if the installation may be stale. If Hulu works on another device, focus on Apple TV software and the app rather than changing the account.

Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense, Sony, and other smart TVs
These televisions use different operating systems and menu names. Look for an app-management option to close, update, clear data, or reinstall Hulu; otherwise use the TV’s restart command. A TV can run other streaming apps and still lack support for the current Hulu app. Check the exact model and software status before considering replacement.
Phone and tablet
Force-close Hulu, update it, and compare Wi-Fi with cellular data. Android users can clear Hulu’s cache from Settings → Apps → Hulu → Storage. On iPhone and iPad, reinstalling is usually the available local reset. If Hulu shows a location-related message, review the app’s location permissions rather than repeatedly entering credentials.

- Open Hulu in a private/incognito window.
- If it works there, clear Hulu’s cached site data and cookies in the regular browser.
- Ensure JavaScript and cookies are enabled (Hulu’s browser requirements).
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy or script extensions, and VPN browser extensions, or allow Hulu where appropriate (Hulu’s ad-blocking guidance).
- Try another current supported browser and restart it after changing settings.
Clear only Hulu-related data when possible; wiping every browser cookie is more disruptive than necessary. Hulu’s cache instructions are at Clear browser cache. If the browser reports an unsupported playback environment, address browser compatibility rather than applying TV-app fixes.

Reinstall Hulu when lower-risk steps fail
- Remove or uninstall Hulu.
- Restart the device.
- Reinstall Hulu from the official app store.
- Sign in again and test Hulu before changing advanced network settings or reinstalling other apps.
Reinstalling removes the local installation; it does not cancel the Hulu subscription. It also cannot fix a Hulu-wide interruption, an unsupported device, or a home-network problem. Follow Hulu’s uninstall and reinstall guidance.
When storage or device age is the real limitation
Low storage can prevent an app from updating or launching. Very old smart TVs may no longer receive the software needed by Hulu, even if other apps continue to work. Confirm support for the exact model before buying hardware. If Hulu works on other devices and the TV platform is unsupported or persistently defective, a supported external player may be more practical than replacing the television. Official options include Roku players, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV 4K. None will solve an account problem, outage, or faulty home network.
How to distinguish an outage from a local failure
Open Hulu on another device with the same account, test another app on the original device, and try another network if practical. Check Hulu’s official Help Center or support contact flow rather than relying on one anecdotal report. If several devices and platforms fail at the same time, stop repeatedly reinstalling apps and wait for an official status update. The current support contact flow is Hulu’s streaming-issues contact page. Do not label Hulu “down” without current, multi-device evidence or an official notice.
Contact Hulu when the problem follows the account
- Hulu fails on multiple devices and networks.
- The welcome loop continues after clearing data and reinstalling.
- You see an account, subscription, location, or activation error.
- Hulu works in a browser but not on a supported device after a fresh install.
- The failure began immediately after a billing, account, or plan change.
Have the device model, operating-system version, Hulu app version if visible, exact screen or error code, start time, results of the other-device and other-app tests, and whether another network changed the result. Hulu advertises live support through its Help Center at help.hulu.com.

What not to do first
- Factory-reset the television.
- Permanently change DNS settings.
- Buy a new player before testing Hulu elsewhere.
- Repeatedly change a working Hulu password.
- Install unofficial APKs or use third-party activation pages.
- Assume every welcome-screen freeze is caused by internet speed.
