There will not be a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series from Hulu based on the proposed project: Hulu decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on March 14, 2026. A pilot had been filmed, but no series was ordered and no release date has been announced.
What happened to the new Buffy series?
Gellar announced Hulu’s decision on March 14, 2026, saying: “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’.” Variety and TVLine reported the decision that day; The Guardian independently reported on March 15 that Hulu would not pick up the planned reboot.

The distinction matters: the project reached the pilot-filming stage, but filming a pilot is not the same as ordering a season. The announcement says Hulu did not proceed; it does not establish whether the pilot will ever be released or made available elsewhere.
Was Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as Buffy?
Gellar was attached to reprise Buffy Summers in a recurring role in the proposed pilot. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was attached as a new Slayer. Those were plans for Buffy: New Sunnydale, not cast credits for a released series.

What had been planned for Buffy: New Sunnydale?
The project was announced in 2025 as a Hulu pilot. Chloé Zhao was attached to direct, while Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were attached as writers and showrunners. The plans centered on a new Slayer alongside Gellar’s returning Buffy. Since Hulu passed on the project, these attachments describe the pilot proposal, not a series in production.

No. With Hulu’s reported decision not to move forward, there is no release date for a series based on this project. The available reporting also does not establish Hulu’s internal reason for passing, or whether the filmed pilot will be released.
