The arithmetic behind the “year of Hulu for $12” headline is straightforward: $0.99 × 12 months = $11.88. Taxes were not included in that figure.
Is the $12 Hulu deal still available?
No. The 2024 promotion expired on December 2, 2024. A reader trying to subscribe now cannot newly claim that exact offer. Black Friday Hulu discounts are temporary seasonal promotions, not permanent subscription tiers. If Hulu displays a different promotion at checkout, its price, duration, eligibility rules, and renewal terms should be treated as a separate offer. Do not assume that a later deal has the same 99-cent price or 12-month term.
It was not a prepaid annual Hulu plan
The promotion discounted the monthly price for the first 12 billing cycles. Subscribers were charged monthly rather than paying $11.88 upfront for a one-year subscription. That distinction matters because the subscription remained an ongoing recurring service.
After the 12 promotional months, the subscription could automatically renew at Hulu’s then-current standard price. Who was eligible?
The deal targeted new subscribers and eligible returning subscribers, not every existing Hulu customer. Returning subscribers generally needed to have canceled at least one month earlier or otherwise meet Hulu’s eligibility conditions. Eligibility was determined at sign-up, so even a former subscriber who had been away for some time was not guaranteed to qualify.
Because the offer has expired, its old eligibility rules cannot be used to claim a current discount. For any new Hulu promotion, check the offer language and the final checkout screen before submitting payment.
What the deal did not include
Hulu + Live TV
The 99-cent promotion was for Hulu’s on-demand catalog with ads. It was not Hulu + Live TV. It therefore did not provide live channels, live sports, local broadcast access, or a cloud DVR through Hulu’s live-television service. Hulu’s product information distinguishes its supported products and devices at Hulu.com.
Someone looking for live sports or a cable-replacement service would have needed a separate Hulu + Live TV plan, subject to that product’s pricing, availability, and regional restrictions.

Disney+
The 2024 Disney+ and Hulu bundle at $2.99 per month for 12 months was a separate Black Friday promotion. It should not be confused with the standalone $0.99 Hulu offer. The standalone deal did not automatically include Disney+.
Premium add-ons
The headline price also did not mean that premium add-ons, live television, or other upgraded features were included. Any optional add-on would have had its own terms and charges.
What you needed to watch Hulu on a television
Hulu can be viewed in a web browser and through supported apps on devices such as Roku players, Amazon Fire TV devices, Apple TV, Chromecast, select Samsung and LG televisions, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android TV, and mobile devices. Availability can vary by device, product, and plan, so check Hulu’s current supported-device information before buying new hardware.
If you already have a compatible smart TV, game console, phone, tablet, computer, or streaming player, you do not need additional equipment for Hulu. For an older television with an available HDMI port but no supported streaming interface, an optional Roku Streaming Stick 4K can provide access to streaming apps. Roku describes the device as an HDMI-connected streaming player, while Hulu identifies Roku as a supported platform. It is an accessory—not part of the Hulu promotion—and requires suitable Wi-Fi and television compatibility.

A separate HDMI cable may be needed only in some setups; do not assume one is necessary before checking the television and the streaming player’s included accessories. The Roku package information cited in the research includes the player, USB power cable, and power adaptor, but individual television setups can differ.
What subscribers should have done at sign-up
- Confirm the plan name. Make sure the checkout page identifies Hulu with ads rather than Hulu + Live TV or another product.
- Check the promotional term. Verify that the displayed price applies for 12 monthly billing cycles.
- Read the renewal language. Note the regular rate that will apply after the promotion, if shown.
- Check eligibility. Returning subscribers should not assume that a previous Hulu account qualifies.
- Record the renewal date. Save the confirmation email and set a reminder before the 12th promotional billing cycle ends.
- Cancel if necessary. If the service is no longer worth the post-promotion price, cancel according to Hulu’s current account instructions before the next paid billing period.

At $11.88 before tax for the first year, the promotion was inexpensive for viewers who expected to use Hulu’s on-demand catalog regularly. The value depended on whether Hulu carried programs the subscriber wanted to watch and whether advertisements were acceptable. It was not automatically a good replacement for a live-TV service, and the low first-year price did not eliminate the need to evaluate the renewal rate.
For a viewer interested only in a particular documentary or short viewing period, the post-promotion renewal risk was more important than the headline discount. A calendar reminder—or canceling when the intended viewing period ends, after checking the applicable access rules—helped prevent an unwanted renewal.
