When did Heretic arrive on Max?
Heretic began streaming exclusively on Max in the United States on March 7, 2025. That date is now historical: the film has already arrived rather than being an upcoming Max release. It remains listed on HBO Max/Max in the latest availability check.
Max’s catalog is not necessarily identical across every plan, bundle, or third-party provider. Search for the exact title inside the Max app or website, and check the details of the offer attached to your account. A listing under a channel partner does not automatically mean that every Max subscription includes the same access.
What is Heretic about?
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, Heretic follows two young missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, who visit the home of a man named Mr. Reed. What initially appears to be a routine religious conversation becomes a tightly controlled psychological and physical ordeal.

That setup is deliberately spoiler-safe: the film’s tension comes from watching a polite invitation turn into a dangerous contest of persuasion, skepticism, belief, and control. Mr. Reed’s home becomes less a place for discussion than a space in which he sets the terms—and the two visitors must decide how much they can trust what they are being told.

Why Hugh Grant’s performance is the main attraction
Hugh Grant is closely associated with quick wit, self-deprecating humor, and a polished kind of charm. Heretic uses those familiar qualities differently. Mr. Reed can sound welcoming and amusing while also making the conversation feel increasingly unsafe, allowing Grant’s usual screen persona to become part of the threat.
That contrast is more important than simply calling the role a “villainous” turn. The character’s apparent reasonableness is what gives the exchanges their unease: charm can lower a person’s defenses, while confidence and verbal fluency can make an argument seem stronger than it is. Grant plays that ambiguity with enough warmth to keep the character unpredictable.

Is Heretic a religious movie or a straightforward horror film?
It is both a horror film and an extended argument about religion, skepticism, and manipulation. The missionaries’ beliefs are central to the setup, but the film is not best understood as a simple one-sided statement for or against faith. Its conflict is also about who controls a conversation, who gets to define the rules, and what happens when intellectual debate is used to overpower another person.
That makes the film particularly suited to viewers who enjoy horror built around ideas as well as physical danger. The premise creates suspense from questions that would normally belong in a discussion: Can belief withstand aggressive scrutiny? Can disbelief become its own kind of certainty? And when someone insists that an exchange is merely an intellectual exercise, what evidence shows that it has become coercive?
