West African music and dance influence music today through rhythmic ideas, performance practices, audience participation and ongoing exchange among African and diasporic musicians. The influence is not a single sound moving in one direction: traditions travel, change and meet new ones, as examples from Mali, Nigeria and contemporary Afrobeats show.
How influence travels across the diaspora
Musical practices have developed through movement and exchange within Africa and across the African diaspora. In The Transformation of Black Music (Oxford University Press, 2017), Sam Floyd, Melanie Zeck and Guthrie Ramsey use call-and-response to help explain this circulation: music can travel from Africa into diasporic communities, change there, and return to Africa in new forms.
That history is not a claim that every contemporary genre has one West African origin. It is a way to understand how musical ideas can be adapted through contact, migration and performance. The book addresses Black music and the diaspora broadly; specific origins need to be established genre by genre.
How music and dance work together
A documented example from Mali
A study of music-dance events in Mali describes performances as a combination of song (dònkili), instrumental music (fòli) and dance (dòn). In the Maninka-language context discussed, the word for song is a compound that literally means “call to dance.” Djembe-centered percussion, clapping, calabash rattles, voices and movement operate together rather than as separate parts of a performance.

The study describes the drums as completing a polyrhythmic groove that helps coordinate and motivate collective movement. It also complicates the idea that dancers simply respond to music: musicians and dancers can shape one another’s actions as an event unfolds. This is a finding about the particular Malian dance circles studied, not a rule for every West African tradition.
How popular dance invites listeners to participate
Nigerian dance songs as shared prompts
A Dance Research Journal article examines Nigerian popular dances including Open & Close, Shoki and Shaku Shaku. It describes how lyrics, song titles, rhythm, melody and tempo can cue recognizable movements. Listeners can learn and repeat those dance prompts, but dancers are not limited to reproducing a fixed routine: they adapt and vary the moves in performance. In this sense, dancing becomes an embodied form of call-and-response between musicians and audiences.

Exchange can go both ways
The article’s Open & Close example traces a movement associated with the Caribbean butterfly dance that Fela Kuti adapted while making music in conversation with soul, funk, jazz and Nigerian tastes. The example shows local innovation happening through transnational exchange; it does not make Fela’s work a passive copy of outside music.
What the Mali and Nigeria examples show
| Documented case | Relationship between music and dance | Audience or dancer role |
|---|---|---|
| Malian music-dance events | Song, percussion and movement combine in a performance; rhythm helps coordinate collective movement. | Collective movement is part of the event, and music and dance can influence one another. |
| Nigerian popular dances | Lyrics, titles and musical features can prompt repeatable movements. | Listeners can take up the dance prompts and vary them in performance. |
These are two sourced examples, not a survey of all West African countries or traditions. They illustrate different ways music and movement can be connected: as an integrated event in the Mali study, and as recognizable dance prompts circulating through popular songs in the Nigerian case.

How contemporary styles reach listeners worldwide
Afrobeats and Afrobeat are different terms
An Associated Press report published on 2 February 2024 describes Afrobeats as a blend of distinct West African styles. It distinguishes this from Afrobeat, the style popularized by Nigerian musician Fela Kuti in the 1970s, blending jazz, funk and traditional West African rhythms. The similar names do not make the terms interchangeable.
Circulation through collaboration and streaming
The same AP report identifies collaborations, internet access and streaming platforms as factors in the international spread of contemporary African genres. It reported that Afrobeats streaming on Spotify had grown by more than 500% since 2017, according to Spotify. These are figures reported in 2024, not current live measurements.

AP also reported in 2024 that Rema’s 2022 song “Calm Down” became the first track led by an African artist to reach one billion Spotify streams and spent 64 weeks on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart. The figures indicate reach for this particular song and the period reported; they do not, by themselves, measure the influence of every West African tradition or genre.

West African influence is audible not only in musical elements but also in how performances organize movement, invite participation and move between communities. The evidence here points to several routes—diasporic exchange, music and dance shaping one another, dance prompts taken up by audiences, and contemporary circulation through collaborations and streaming—without reducing a diverse region to one style.
