How Video Compression Works: A Beginner’s Guide

Video compression reduces data by simplifying frame detail and encoding changes between frames. Learn how codecs, containers, bitrate, and lossy versus lossless settings affect file size and quality.

Video compression makes moving images small enough to store and stream efficiently by reducing detail within individual frames and avoiding the repeated storage of information that neighboring frames share. The encoder creates a compressed video stream; a compatible decoder reconstructs the frames for playback. How much the file shrinks—and whether the result looks different—depends on the compression method, settings, and footage.

What video compression does

A video is a sequence of still images, called frames, displayed in rapid succession. Storing every frame as a complete, uncompressed image would require enormous amounts of data: MDN Web Docs gives the explanatory approximation that a single 4K frame contains about 8 million pixels and is roughly 25 MB, and that an hour of uncompressed 4K video would exceed 3 TB. Those figures illustrate uncompressed data, not the size of a compressed video file.

A video encoder reduces the information that needs to be stored or transmitted. It may simplify image detail, represent changes between frames instead of repeating whole images, and encode the resulting symbols efficiently. A decoder performs the corresponding reconstruction when a player displays the video.

How compression works

Within a frame: simplify image detail

Images contain details at different scales. A lossy encoder can reduce or discard some fine, high-frequency detail that viewers may notice less, then represent the remaining information more compactly. Stronger compression can produce smaller files, but it can also make the picture less faithful to its source. Visible results may include blockiness, smearing, banding, or loss of fine texture.

Between frames: encode changes

Neighboring frames often show much of the same scene. Instead of storing each frame as a wholly independent image, an encoder can use reference frames to predict a later image, then store information about the difference between that prediction and the actual frame. A fuller reference picture is often called an intra-coded or key frame; predicted frames carry changes relative to reference pictures.

This temporal compression can save data, especially in steady scenes. It also means that seeking and recovery from corrupted data can depend on reference points: a player may need to decode an earlier reference frame before it can reconstruct a later predicted frame.

Afterward: encode symbols compactly

Once prediction and other encoding choices have been made, lossless entropy coding can represent the remaining symbols efficiently. “Lossless” here describes this final coding stage only. If an earlier lossy step discarded visual information, entropy coding does not restore it.

What determines file size and picture quality?

Bitrate is the amount of data allocated per second. More bitrate generally gives an encoder more room to preserve detail and usually creates a larger file, but bitrate alone does not determine quality. As the IETF explains in RFC 9317, bitrate selection depends on resolution, frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion.

  • Resolution: More pixels per frame generally require more data to represent.
  • Frame rate: More frames per second generally increase data requirements. Keeping the source frame rate is usually sensible unless there is a clear reason to change it.
  • Motion and detail: Fast movement, intricate textures, and image noise are harder to predict or compress at a given bitrate than a steady, simple scene.
  • Codec and encoder settings: These affect the coding methods available, the output, encoding time, and whether a device can play the result. Encoding can require substantially more computation than decoding.
  • Lossy or lossless mode: Lossy compression accepts some difference from the original to reduce size. Lossless compression preserves the original data on decoding, but typically results in much larger files.

Does compressing a video reduce quality?

It depends on the method. Lossy compression can reduce quality because it discards or simplifies some source information; the change may be hard to notice at a modest setting or obvious when compression is aggressive. Lossless compression does not change the video data recovered by decoding, but its files are generally much larger.

Even a lossy file can look excellent. The result depends on how much data is available, the encoder and its settings, the video’s content, and the playback conditions. There is no single bitrate that guarantees a particular visual quality for every clip.

Codec and container are different

A codec specifies methods for encoding and decoding video. H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, VP9, and AV1 are examples. A container packages one or more encoded streams with information such as audio and metadata. MP4, WebM, and MKV are examples of containers.

An .mp4 extension does not identify the video codec by itself: a container may support more than one codec. Playback requires a player that can read the container and decode the particular video codec inside it. Compatibility therefore depends on both.

How to think about common codec choices

  • H.264/AVC: A practical choice when compatibility matters. YouTube recommends H.264 in its specified upload workflow.
  • HEVC/H.265: Vimeo describes it as a way to achieve a smaller file with high visual quality, with longer encoding time as a trade-off.
  • AV1: The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec designed for efficient compression, including high-resolution adaptive streaming and HDR uses.

These broad descriptions are not guarantees that one codec will always create a smaller file or better-looking video. Results vary with the encoder implementation, settings, footage, and device support. When choosing, weigh compatibility, visual quality at your target bitrate, encoding time and compute cost, and whether the playback devices can decode the codec.

What bitrate should you use?

Start with the destination’s instructions and identify the exact workflow. Published figures vary because they describe different platforms and purposes; they are guidance, not universal viewing requirements.

The IETF table gives no H.264 4K value in the cited row, so none is inferred here. YouTube’s figures above are for SDR; its guidance distinguishes SDR from HDR. YouTube also recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate and specifies H.264, progressive scan, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling for its workflow. Vimeo recommends variable bitrate when available. Follow the relevant platform guidance rather than treating one platform’s figures as requirements for another.

When compressed files are used in a live YouTube stream

Compression matters to live playback too: the encoded video must be sent at a rate and in a format the streaming workflow can handle. If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, one option is to run a streaming setup yourself; another is to use a cloud service designed to loop uploaded videos. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for that use case, not for going live from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
