The song had come out three days earlier, on February 1. The Associated Press reported that Joel later returned to perform his 1980 song “You May Be Right.”
What Billy Joel performed at the 2024 Grammys
Joel’s Grammy-stage performance of “Turn the Lights Back On” introduced a new song in the same evening that also included a return to an older part of his catalog. CBS had announced Joel as a performer ahead of the ceremony; AP’s report after the event confirms the performances.
AP describes “You May Be Right” as a later return to the stage. It was a separate performance from the new single, not the song Joel debuted at the Grammys.
| Performance | Place in the evening | Release-era context |
|---|---|---|
| “Turn the Lights Back On” | Joel’s performance of his new single | Released February 1, 2024, three days before the ceremony |
| “You May Be Right” | A later return to the stage, according to AP | Joel’s 1980 song |
When the single came out and who made it
Billy Joel’s official site announced the release on January 22, 2024, and said the single would arrive February 1. The official catalog page gives February 1 as the release date. Joel’s announcement called it his first new single in decades.

What the song meant to its co-writer
Freddy Wexler discussed the song and Grammy performance in a February 26, 2024, interview with the Recording Academy. He characterized its emotional perspective as an unusually direct engagement with mistakes and regret: “I think it’s a very raw, honest, real perspective that is true to Billy. I think it’s the first time we’ve heard him acknowledge mistakes and regret in quite this way.”

Wexler said listeners understood the song in different ways. Some heard it as speaking to former partners or friends; others connected it to Joel’s recording hiatus and fans, or to the act of songwriting itself. Those are interpretations Wexler described, not a definitive statement from Joel about the song’s meaning.
The Recording Academy interview also describes Joel performing with Laufey at the ceremony and gives Wexler’s firsthand perspective on the production and performance. The available sources do not provide a specific quotation from Joel explaining this Grammy performance.
