Watch the Predator movies in release order for your first viewing; use chronological order for a rewatch. Release order starts with the 1987 original and preserves the franchise’s progression through urban, crossover, historical, animated, and future-set stories. The practical chronological order begins with Prey and ends with Predator: Badlands.
For a first-time marathon, watch the Predator movies in release order. That preserves the franchise’s original introduction, its move from jungle warfare to urban crime, the two Alien vs. Predator crossovers, and its later experiments with prequels, animation, and a future-set story.

Chronological order is better for a rewatch. It begins with Prey, moves through the historical anthology Predator: Killer of Killers, and then follows the modern, crossover, alien-planet, and far-future stories. The chronology is approximate in places because not every film provides a precise calendar year.
As of August 13, 2026, there are nine released films in a complete Predator-focused marathon: seven primarily live-action films, the animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers, and Predator: Badlands.

Predator movies in release-date order
| # | Film | Release date | Type | What it is about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Predator | June 12, 1987 | Standalone | Dutch and a covert military team are hunted by an extraterrestrial with advanced weapons and camouflage in a Central American jungle. |
| 2 | Predator 2 | November 21, 1990 | Standalone sequel | Detective-Lieutenant Mike Harrigan investigates a series of killings as a Predator stalks Los Angeles. |
| 3 | Alien vs. Predator | August 13, 2004 | Crossover | Human explorers become trapped between Xenomorphs and Predators in an ancient pyramid beneath Antarctica. |
| 4 | Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem | 2007 | Crossover sequel | The Alien-Predator conflict reaches a Colorado town in the immediate follow-up to the first crossover. |
| 5 | Predators | July 9, 2010 | Standalone sequel | A group of dangerous humans is abducted and taken to an alien planet that functions as a hunting ground. |
| 6 | The Predator | September 14, 2018 | Standalone sequel | Ex-soldiers and specialists confront genetically upgraded Predators and a threat that could endanger humanity. |
| 7 | Prey | August 5, 2022 | Prequel | Naru, a young Comanche warrior, faces a technologically advanced Predator roughly 300 years before the original film. |
| 8 | Predator: Killer of Killers | June 6, 2025 | Animated anthology | Three stories follow human warriors from the Viking era, feudal Japan, and World War II as they encounter Predators. |
| 9 | Predator: Badlands | November 7, 2025 | Future-set standalone | An outcast young Predator joins an unlikely ally on a remote planet. The story is set in the future, but no exact calendar year is established. |
1. Predator (1987)
The original remains the best starting point. Dutch leads a highly trained military unit into a Central American jungle, where the mission gradually changes from a rescue operation into a fight for survival against an invisible hunter. The film introduces the Predator’s signature technology, hunting code, thermal vision, and trophy-taking behavior without requiring any franchise background.
2. Predator 2 (1990)
The sequel deliberately changes the setting. Instead of a remote jungle, the hunt takes place in a violent, overheated Los Angeles during a gang war. Mike Harrigan’s investigation gives the Predator mythology a broader urban context and expands the idea that the creature has been observing and hunting humans for a long time.
3. Alien vs. Predator (2004) — crossover
This is the first film to combine the Predator mythology with the Alien universe. An expedition beneath Antarctica discovers an ancient pyramid designed around a ritual conflict between Predators and Xenomorphs. It is part of a complete Predator movie marathon, but it is best understood as a crossover detour rather than a conventional third chapter.
4. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) — crossover
Requiem continues the crossover story in Colorado. It follows the consequences of the previous film’s events and keeps the focus on the collision between the two extraterrestrial species. Viewers watching only the core standalone Predator stories can omit both crossover movies; viewers completing the released film set should watch them here.
5. Predators (2010)
A group of violent or highly capable people wakes up on an alien planet and discovers that they are being hunted as game. The film returns to the basic survival premise of the original while relocating the hunting ground away from Earth. Its exact in-universe year is not essential for either watch order.
Rank #2
6. The Predator (2018)
This modern-Earth entry introduces genetically upgraded Predators and follows a group of ex-soldiers and specialists attempting to stop a threat to humanity. It is the last release in the original run of primarily live-action standalone entries before the franchise moved backward into history and then forward into animation and science fiction.
7. Prey (2022)
Set in the Comanche Nation approximately 300 years before Predator, Prey follows Naru as she proves herself against a Predator during the early eighteenth century. Its historical setting makes it the clearest first entry in a chronological marathon, although its later release means first-time viewers generally get more context and surprise by saving it for release order.
8. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025)
This R-rated animated anthology is not one story taking place in one year. It contains three separate historical segments:

- Feudal Japan: watch this segment second.
- World War II: watch this segment third.
For a practical chronological marathon, place the entire film after Prey and before the 1987 original, while remembering that its three stories span different periods. Do not assign the anthology a single date.
9. Predator: Badlands (2025)
Badlands is set on a remote planet in the far future and makes an unusual choice for the series: the outcast young Predator is central to the story, alongside an unlikely ally. It should be the final stop in chronological order. “Future” or “far future” is the accurate description; there is no reliable exact calendar year to use unless an official source establishes one.

Predator movies in chronological order
For viewers following the story’s broad timeline rather than the films’ release history, use this order:
- Prey (2022): approximately 300 years before the original film.
- Predator: Killer of Killers (2025): place its Viking, feudal-Japanese, and World War II segments in that historical order. The anthology does not occupy one single year.
- Predator (1987): the first modern-era standalone hunt in the released-film sequence.
- Predator 2 (1990): the next Earth-based story, this time in Los Angeles.
- Alien vs. Predator (2004): the Antarctic crossover.
- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007): the direct Colorado-set continuation of the crossover.
- Predators (2010): the alien-planet hunting-ground story.
- The Predator (2018): the modern-Earth story involving genetically upgraded hunters.
- Predator: Badlands (2025): the future-set finale of this practical film chronology.
This is a useful viewing sequence, not a claim that every film has an officially published, fully dated timeline. The placement of Prey is clear at the broad historical level. Killer of Killers must be handled as an anthology, Predators does not need an exact year to fit into the marathon, and Badlands is best labeled simply as future or far future.

Choose release order for your first viewing
Release order lets you experience the original mystery before later films add new variations and explanations. It also makes the franchise’s evolution easier to follow: jungle action, urban crime, crossover horror, alien-planet survival, modern genetic experimentation, historical prequel, animated anthology, and future-set science fiction.
Release order also avoids the tonal whiplash of beginning with a historical story, jumping to a 1987 action film, and then moving through crossovers before reaching the newer entries. There is no official studio mandate requiring this order; it is the most viewer-friendly editorial recommendation for newcomers.
Choose chronological order for a rewatch
Chronological order works especially well if you want to trace Predator encounters across human history. It begins with Naru’s encounter in Prey, moves through the three historical periods in Killer of Killers, and then advances through the modern Earth, crossover, alien-planet, and distant-future eras.
Do you need to watch the Alien vs. Predator movies?
No—not if you want only the standalone Predator progression. You can watch Predator, Predator 2, Predators, The Predator, Prey, Killer of Killers, and Badlands without treating the two crossover films as essential chapters in one continuous story.
Yes—if you want every released Predator-focused film. Include Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem between Predator 2 and Predators in release order. Their purpose is to stage a meeting between the Predator and Xenomorph mythologies, so label them as crossover films rather than numbered sequels.

Hulu’s U.S. Predator collection listed the established films and newer entries at the time of research, including Predator: Killer of Killers; Hulu also has a separate title page for Predator: Badlands. Catalogs, plan requirements, and regional rights can change, so check the current listing before starting a marathon. Availability on Hulu should be treated as current only as of the date you verify it, not as a permanent guarantee.
Owning the core movies
For physical media, the Predator 4-Movie Collection is a practical option for the four core live-action films released from 1987 through 2018: Predator, Predator 2, Predators, and The Predator. Depending on the edition, it may be sold as Blu-ray, 4K UHD with Blu-ray, and/or digital formats.
It is not a complete nine-film collection. You would still need to obtain Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers, Predator: Badlands, Alien vs. Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem separately. The official home-video timing for Badlands listed digital availability beginning January 6, 2026, followed by Blu-ray availability beginning February 17, 2026; confirm the edition and region before buying.
