For a first viewing, watch the five released Mad Max movies in release order: Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024).
If you want the closest practical story chronology, move Furiosa ahead of Fury Road. The franchise’s continuity is deliberately mythic rather than a perfectly dated timeline, so release order is the clearest choice for newcomers.

The best order for first-time viewers
- Mad Max (1979) — Mel Gibson plays Max Rockatansky before society fully collapses.
- Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) — Max becomes the wandering survivalist associated with the franchise.
- Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) — The original trilogy concludes with Bartertown, Aunty Entity, and a distinctive post-apocalyptic community.
- Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) — Tom Hardy takes over as Max, while Charlize Theron introduces the modern Imperator Furiosa.
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) — Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne portray Furiosa at earlier stages of her life.
This order follows the films’ release history and George Miller’s changing approach to the world, its characters, and its action. It also lets Furiosa work as an origin story that adds context to the Furiosa viewers already know from Fury Road.
There are currently five released films in the movie series, with a combined runtime of approximately 9 hours and 22 minutes, according to JustWatch’s franchise guide.

The closest practical chronological order
- Mad Max (1979)
- Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
- Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
- Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The only practical change is placing Furiosa before Fury Road. Furiosa is a prequel to Fury Road, following the character’s childhood and her rise in the wasteland before she becomes the Imperator seen in the 2015 film. It is not a conventional sequel.
“Chronological order” needs a qualification here. The first three films are generally treated as connected adventures in Max’s transformation from police officer to isolated road warrior. Fury Road, however, does not fit neatly into a fully documented calendar alongside the original trilogy. The safest description is that it is a soft reboot, adjusted continuity, or mythic continuation of the broader Mad Max legend. Rotten Tomatoes’ franchise explanation likewise treats the modern films as operating on a separate timeline intended to avoid contradictions.
Should you watch Furiosa before Fury Road?
For a first viewing of the whole franchise: watch Fury Road first, following release order. It introduces Furiosa as an established character, and the prequel then expands her history.

If you only want the modern films:
- Furiosa → Fury Road for story chronology.
- Fury Road → Furiosa for release order and the intended introduction of Furiosa.
Is Fury Road a sequel to the original trilogy?
It is best understood as a continuation of the Mad Max mythology, not as a straightforward, literal sequel to Beyond Thunderdome. The films share Max, the wasteland, road-warrior imagery, and recurring ideas about survival and legend, but details such as Max’s age, history, vehicles, and the state of the world do not form a perfectly consistent timeline.

You can therefore watch Fury Road without seeing the first three films. It establishes its central conflict, the Citadel, Immortan Joe, Furiosa, and the wasteland clearly enough for newcomers. Watching the original trilogy first is still worthwhile if you want to see Max’s transformation and understand how Miller’s visual language developed from the Australian road films into the large-scale action of Fury Road.

The catalog is fragmented: Furiosa is the clearest subscription-streaming option in this snapshot, while the original trilogy and Fury Road may require separate rentals, purchases, ad-supported services, or physical media. Do not assume one subscription includes all five films. Availability outside the United States will differ.

How to schedule the full marathon
- One day: Possible, but demanding. Allow roughly ten hours with breaks.
- Two days: Watch the original trilogy on day one, then the two modern films on day two.
- Best pacing: Treat Mad Max, Mad Max 2, and Beyond Thunderdome as one historical run, then watch Fury Road and Furiosa as the modern pair—or reverse those last two for chronology.
Do you need the video game or comics?
No. The 2015 open-world Mad Max video game is not required and is treated as a separate continuity. It should not be inserted into the movie order.
The Fury Road tie-in comics add supplementary background, but they are not necessary for understanding any of the films. Read them only if you want additional world-building after watching the movies.
The simple recommendation
New to the franchise? Watch all five films in release order: Mad Max, Mad Max 2, Beyond Thunderdome, Fury Road, then Furiosa.
Rewatching or prioritizing chronology? Watch Furiosa immediately before Fury Road. That pairing gives Furiosa’s story its most direct sequence without pretending the entire franchise has a precise, contradiction-free timeline.
