For a group screening, start with the film’s official Watch page and compare it with the current PBS listing. PBS lists The Letter: A Message for Our Earth at 1 hour, 19 minutes, 27 seconds for streaming on pbs.org and the PBS app; Apple TV and Amazon are listed as purchase options. Availability and purchase format can vary by territory, so check the service from the location where the group will watch. The official film site also lists English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French subtitles, plus automatic subtitles in other languages and dubbed versions in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French.
After choosing a route, use the Laudato Si’ Centre’s discussion and reflection guide, lesson plan or at-home resource as appropriate. The film follows frontline leaders who travel to Rome to discuss Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, bringing together perspectives described by PBS as those of poor communities, Indigenous people, young people and wildlife. That combination gives a group a clear path from viewing, to interpretation, to a locally relevant response.
Where you can watch the film
Check availability immediately before announcing the event. Streaming catalogs, app access and storefront listings are regional and can change without notice. The following options are the routes identified for this film.
Official film Watch page
The official film site has a Watch page that acts as the best starting point for a group organizer. Use it to confirm the currently supported player, language controls and any regional notices. Because the page is maintained for the film itself, it is also the place to check when a platform listing appears inconsistent with the film’s own information.

PBS streaming
PBS currently lists the documentary for streaming on pbs.org and in the PBS app. Its listing gives a runtime of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 27 seconds. Treat that as the film’s listed duration, not as the total length of your event: introductions, a pause and discussion will make a group session longer.
Purchase listings
PBS names Apple TV and Amazon as purchase options. The material available for this guide does not establish whether a particular listing is a digital rental, a digital purchase, a physical edition or a combination, so inspect the listing’s format, playback restrictions and device support before paying. A purchase listing visible in one country may not appear in another.
| Route | What is established | What the organizer must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Official film site | A Watch page is provided. | Current player, territory, captions, dubbing and any event-specific instructions. |
| PBS website | PBS lists the 1:19:27 documentary for streaming. | Whether the stream plays in the group’s country and whether sign-in or other access conditions apply. |
| PBS app | The film is listed in the PBS app. | App availability, supported devices, local catalog and the ability to cast or connect to the room display. |
| Apple TV or Amazon | PBS names both as purchase routes. | Digital versus physical format, territory, price, playback devices and whether every attendee can view it at the scheduled time. |
Choose the best viewing route for your group
Do not choose solely on the lowest apparent price. A route that works for one household may fail for a classroom, a community hall or an international group. Compare four practical questions before you publish the invitation.
1. Is the title available where the event takes place?
Open the service while connected from the event location, not only from an organizer’s travel or office account. If participants are joining remotely, ask a representative sample to check access in their own countries. Never promise worldwide availability on the basis of one successful login.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Does the route fit the group’s budget and format?
PBS streaming may provide a no-purchase route where it is available. A storefront purchase can be useful when a group needs a predictable start time or wants to avoid a changing streaming catalog, but the listing’s actual format must be confirmed. If the group needs a physical disc, do not assume that a digital storefront listing supplies one.
3. Can everyone follow the language?
Choose a player that exposes the required subtitle or audio controls. The official film information lists subtitles in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French; automatic subtitles are available in other languages. Dubbed versions are listed in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French. Automatic captions can contain errors, so test them with the actual playback device rather than relying on a service description.

4. Which discussion resource will you use?
A community event may benefit from the Laudato Si’ Centre’s discussion and reflection guide. A secondary-school, sixth-form or university group may be better served by its lesson plan. Individuals or families can use the at-home resource. Select the resource before the screening so the facilitator can frame the conversation without improvising an unrelated activity.
Plan the screening before you send the invitation
Set the purpose
Write one sentence explaining what the group is meeting to do. For example: “We will watch the film, examine whose experiences it brings into the conversation about Laudato Si’, and identify one response that makes sense in our community.” A specific purpose helps participants arrive ready to listen rather than expecting a general movie night.

- Host: welcomes participants, explains the schedule and starts the film.
- Playback lead: tests the account, app, display, speakers and subtitle settings.
- Facilitator: keeps the discussion connected to the film instead of allowing one speaker to dominate.
- Timekeeper: watches the transition from viewing to discussion and protects the final action-planning segment.
- Access contact: confirms language, caption and remote-participation needs in advance.
Test the exact setup
- Open the selected service from the room, network and device that will be used for the event.
- Play several minutes, then pause and resume to check that the stream recovers correctly.
- Turn subtitles on and off, select the required language and confirm that text is readable from the back of the room.
- Check the dubbed-audio menu if the group needs one of the listed dubbed versions.
- Connect the display and speakers, then verify that the film—not only the service menu—plays through them.
- Record a backup plan: a second authorized viewing route, a changed date or a smaller gathering if the main stream fails.
Do not distribute an unverified link in the invitation. A working link on an organizer’s device is not proof that every attendee can open it.
Tell participants what to expect
Include the 1:19:27 runtime, the planned discussion length, the language and caption choice, whether people may join remotely and whether they should read any material beforehand. Explain that the conversation will address environmental responsibility, social experience and local action; this allows participants to decide whether the event suits them.
Use the film’s language and accessibility options deliberately
The official film information lists English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French subtitles. It also notes automatic subtitles in other languages and dubbed versions in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French. These are useful options, but they are not interchangeable.
Subtitles
Subtitles preserve the original performances while making dialogue available in the selected language. Test line length, contrast and timing on the actual screen. If participants are reading from a distance, a small laptop preview is not enough; check the room display.

Automatic subtitles
Automatic captions can expand language access when a prepared subtitle track is unavailable. Because recognition can mishear names and specialist terms, tell participants that the track is machine-generated and offer a way to ask for clarification during discussion.
Dubbing
A dubbed track may make sustained viewing easier for participants who prefer listening in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French. Confirm that the selected audio remains active after pausing, seeking or reconnecting. If the group includes mixed language preferences, decide whether one shared audio track or individual remote settings will be least disruptive.
Give the discussion a clear frame
Start with the film’s subject
The documentary follows frontline leaders to Rome to discuss Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’. PBS describes the film’s perspectives as the voices of the poor, Indigenous people, youth and wildlife. These are not merely categories for a checklist: they invite the group to ask how lived experience changes the way environmental problems are described and what counts as an adequate response.
Connect the film to the encyclical
In an official Holy See video message, Pope Francis says: “With the Encyclical Laudato si’, promulgated in 2015, I invited all people of good will to take care of the Earth, which is our common home.” Use the sentence as a bridge, not as a substitute for the film. Ask participants what the documentary adds through its people, places and encounters, and where they hear the idea of a shared home expressed in practical terms.
Protect a range of experiences
Some participants may approach the film through faith, some through climate or social-justice work, and others through personal experience of environmental change. Make room for disagreement about interpretation while keeping the conversation anchored to scenes, testimony and the film’s stated subject. Avoid asking one person to speak for an entire community or identity group.
A ready-to-use event schedule
The schedule below is a suggestion for a single gathering. Adjust the discussion blocks to the size and experience of the group; the film’s runtime itself remains 1 hour, 19 minutes and 27 seconds.

Discussion questions that move beyond a summary
Representation and voice
- Which perspective changed or complicated your understanding of the issue?
- Whose experience receives sustained attention, and whose experience is less visible?
- How do the voices of poor communities, Indigenous people, young people and wildlife relate to one another rather than simply appear as separate examples?
- What responsibilities fall on viewers when a film brings testimony from people whose circumstances differ from their own?
The encyclical and the film
- Where does the film make the idea of Earth as a common home concrete?
- Which moments feel connected to the invitation in Laudato Si’ to care for the Earth, and why?
- Does the film present care as an individual habit, a community practice, a political responsibility or several of these at once?
- What questions about faith, ethics or public responsibility remain open after viewing?
From global story to local setting
- What environmental or social concern in your area resembles a concern raised in the film?
- Who is most affected by that local concern, and who is already working on it?
- What would a response look like if affected people helped define the goal rather than being consulted only afterward?
- Which proposed action is specific enough to begin, small enough to manage and meaningful enough to matter?
Film form and emotion
- Which image, encounter or transition shaped your reaction most strongly?
- How did the journey to Rome affect the way you understood the conversations?
- When did the film invite empathy, and when did it ask for analysis or accountability?
- Did any emotional response make it harder—or easier—to identify a practical next step?
Use the right group resource
The Laudato Si’ Centre says communities can watch on YouTube and download a guide containing discussion and reflection points. It also points to a lesson plan for secondary-school, sixth-form and university students and to an at-home resource. Check that the relevant pages and downloads still work before the event, and read the chosen material rather than handing it to participants without context.

Community event
Use the discussion and reflection guide to structure an open conversation. Select only the questions that fit your group’s time and experience; a shorter, well-facilitated exchange is more useful than attempting every prompt.
School, sixth form or university
The lesson plan is designed for those educational settings. Identify the learning objective, safeguarding expectations and assessment requirements before adapting it. Keep the film’s testimonies central rather than turning the session into a generic environmental worksheet.
Home viewing
The at-home resource can help a household or small group prepare and reflect without a formal facilitator. Agree on a time to talk after the film so the viewing does not end as soon as the credits do.
Further reading
An edition of Laudato Si’ can provide the primary text behind the film for readers who want to explore its themes. It is optional: nobody needs to own or read the encyclical to watch the documentary or participate in a respectful discussion.

Troubleshoot common screening problems
The film is unavailable in your country
Recheck the official Watch page and the PBS website or app from the event location. If a storefront listing is visible only to the organizer, ask another local participant to test it. Do not use an unauthorized copy as a workaround; change the date, viewing route or event format instead.
The purchase listing is unclear
Read the product description for format, ownership or rental terms, compatible devices and territory. PBS’s reference to Amazon does not by itself establish that the listing is digital or physical, so confirm before payment.
Captions or audio do not remain selected
Stop playback, set the language again and resume. If the setting resets, document the exact device and app behavior and use a tested alternative. Tell the group which language will be used before the film starts.
Remote attendees cannot hear or see the film
Run a short pre-event test with the same meeting setup. Avoid relying on a camera pointed at a room screen when a lawful, direct viewing route is available to participants. Keep the discussion connection separate from the playback test so a technical failure does not consume the entire conversation.
The conversation becomes dominated by one person
Use a first-round prompt with a brief limit, invite people who have not spoken, and return to the prepared questions. Ask participants to refer to a scene or idea rather than making assumptions about another person’s identity or experience.
Turn reflection into a specific follow-up
End with a written action rather than a general promise to “do more.” Record four elements:
- Issue: the local concern connected to the discussion.
- Action: one observable step the group can take.
- Owner: the person or team responsible for arranging it.
- Review date: when the group will report what happened and decide whether to continue.
Examples might include arranging a meeting with an existing local organization, preparing an educational session, mapping who is affected by a neighborhood concern or changing one practice that the group itself controls. The film does not prescribe one universal response; the value of the final segment is choosing an action that fits the group’s authority and community.
What the audience figure does—and does not—tell you
The Laudato Si’ Movement reported more than 8 million YouTube views in 2022. That is a historical reported figure, not a current audited view count, and it should not be presented as the film’s present audience size. It does, however, indicate that the documentary has reached a substantial public audience and can support a discussion that connects local participants with a wider conversation.

- Confirm the Watch page, PBS listing or verified purchase route from the event location.
- Record the listed runtime of 1:19:27 in the invitation and schedule.
- Test playback, display, sound, subtitles and dubbed audio on the actual equipment.
- Choose English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French subtitles—or a listed dubbed version—before participants arrive.
- Select the community guide, educational lesson plan or at-home resource that matches the group.
- Prepare questions about representation, Laudato Si’, local responsibility and the film’s emotional effect.
- Allow time for a concrete action with an owner and review date.
- Keep a lawful backup plan for regional, account or technical failures.
The most reliable format is simple: verify access, make language and accessibility visible, watch the complete film, discuss whose voices and responsibilities it presents, and leave with one locally grounded action. That approach respects both the documentary and the people who gather to respond to it.
