The four Kung Fu Panda movies in order
- Kung Fu Panda (2008)
- Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
- Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)
- Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
This is the best order for most viewers, especially families watching the franchise for the first time. The four films are the stable core of the series and tell Po’s main cinematic story. DreamWorks lists all four feature films as separate entries in the franchise.
What happens in each movie?
- Kung Fu Panda: Po, an enthusiastic panda who works in his father’s noodle shop, is unexpectedly chosen to become the Dragon Warrior. He must learn kung fu under Master Shifu while facing the escaped villain Tai Lung.
- Kung Fu Panda 2: Po is now an established Dragon Warrior. His battle with Lord Shen forces him to investigate his past and learn more about his connection to the panda community.
- Kung Fu Panda 3: Po meets his biological father and travels to a hidden panda village. At the same time, the supernatural warrior Kai threatens the kung fu masters and challenges Po’s understanding of chi.
- Kung Fu Panda 4: Po is asked to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace rather than remain its active Dragon Warrior. Before taking on that new responsibility, he must find and train a successor while confronting the shape-shifting Chameleon. DreamWorks describes the film’s official premise on its movie page.
Should you watch the shows before the next movie?
No. The television shows are not required to understand the four films. They add side adventures and expand the world around Po and the Furious Five, but the feature films provide the essential character and story progression.

Complete Kung Fu Panda release order
This sequence follows the franchise’s practical release history. It is the recommended order if you want to see the films, specials, shorts, and television series without trying to force every episode into a precise master timeline.
- Kung Fu Panda — feature film, 2008
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five — animated short, 2008
- Kung Fu Panda Holiday — television special, 2010
- Kung Fu Panda 2 — feature film, 2011
- Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness — television series, 2011–2016
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters — animated short, 2011
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Scroll — animated short, 2015
- Kung Fu Panda 3 — feature film, 2016
- Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny — television series, 2018–2019
- Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight — television series, 2022–2023
- Kung Fu Panda 4 — feature film, 2024
The television entries are marked as optional because they are spin-offs rather than mandatory chapters in the movie storyline. You can skip them and move directly from one film to the next without losing the central narrative.
Release-order guide to the shorts and shows
Secrets of the Furious Five (2008)
This companion short focuses on the Furious Five and is framed around Po telling stories about them. Watch it after the first movie, when you already know Po, Shifu, Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane.
Kung Fu Panda Holiday (2010)
This seasonal television special follows Po during a difficult holiday assignment at the Jade Palace. It was broadcast on NBC on November 24, 2010, placing it between the first and second films in release order. It is an easy optional addition to a holiday movie night.
Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (2011–2016)
Produced as a Nickelodeon television spin-off, Legends of Awesomeness gives Po and the Furious Five a large collection of episodic adventures. It debuted in the United States in 2011 and continued through 2016. Animation World Network reported on the series’ U.S. debut.
Because it is episodic, it is better treated as a broad early-Dragon-Warrior-era spin-off than as a series that must be placed episode by episode between the films.
Secrets of the Masters (2011)
This short is an anthology centered on earlier kung fu masters and is less important to Po’s personal arc than the feature films. It can be watched in its release position or saved for a shorts-only session.
Secrets of the Scroll (2015)
This prequel short looks back at the Furious Five before Po became the Dragon Warrior. Its historical setting makes it one of the few entries that can reasonably be moved to the beginning of a chronological viewing order.

Released in two parts during the Amazon era, this series follows Po’s relationship with four young panda children who become connected to powerful chi. It fits broadly after Kung Fu Panda 3, when Po has re-established a connection with the panda community.
The Dragon Knight (2022–2023)
In this Netflix series, Po travels with the English knight Wandering Blade while pursuing a collection of magical weapons and attempting to restore his reputation. Netflix lists the show with three seasons and presents it as a later Po adventure. Netflix’s official materials also identify Jack Black’s return as the voice of Po.
Practical chronological order
This is a useful story-oriented sequence, not an officially published episode-level canon order. It moves the historical prequel short to the front and places the television series in the broad eras where they make the most sense.
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Scroll — historical prequel material about the Furious Five
- Kung Fu Panda — Po becomes the Dragon Warrior
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five — companion short
- Kung Fu Panda Holiday — holiday special
- Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness — optional early Dragon Warrior-era adventures
- Kung Fu Panda 2 — Po confronts Lord Shen and his past
- Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters — optional anthology short
- Kung Fu Panda 3 — Po discovers more about his family and chi
- Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny — Po mentors young pandas
- Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight — Po’s later international quest
- Kung Fu Panda 4 — Po prepares for his next role
The first four films should remain in numerical order in either viewing plan. The exact location of individual episodes from Legends of Awesomeness, The Paws of Destiny, and The Dragon Knight is less certain because the available official franchise information does not provide a single timeline assigning every episode to a precise point between the movies.

Where can you watch the Kung Fu Panda movies and shows?
Availability depends on your country, date, and whether a title is included with a subscription or offered only as a rental or purchase. Streaming catalogs change, so check the current listing in your territory before starting a marathon.
DreamWorks’ franchise page has directed viewers to Netflix for The Dragon Knight and identified Amazon availability for The Paws of Destiny at the time of the supplied research. Those references should not be read as a guarantee that every season or film is included in a subscription everywhere. The same distinction applies to Legends of Awesomeness, the shorts, and the holiday special.
If you want reliable repeat access for a family, consider Kung Fu Panda movies on Blu-ray. Physical editions and collections can be useful when a film moves between streaming services, but check the listing carefully for the exact films, region, disc format, and included bonus material. Do not assume that a movie collection includes the television series.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to skip—and what not to skip
- Do not skip any numbered movie if you want Po’s main arc.
- You can skip Legends of Awesomeness if you are watching for the movie story; it is a large optional television expansion.
- You can skip The Paws of Destiny and The Dragon Knight without becoming lost in Kung Fu Panda 4.
- Watch Secrets of the Furious Five after the first movie if you want the most natural introduction to the short.
- Watch Secrets of the Scroll first only if chronology matters more to you than release experience. Otherwise, its 2015 release position works well.
- Save Kung Fu Panda Holiday for the holiday season if you prefer seasonal viewing rather than strict release order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to watch the Kung Fu Panda shows before Kung Fu Panda 4?
No. The four movies form the primary story, and the television series are optional spin-offs. Watch the films in numerical order if you want the clearest path to Kung Fu Panda 4.
Rank #4
Is there an official chronological order for every Kung Fu Panda episode?
No definitive DreamWorks episode-by-episode master timeline is identified in the available official franchise information. The practical chronological order places each series in a broad story era rather than assigning every episode between specific films.
Where does Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Scroll fit?
It is a prequel short about the Furious Five before Po’s story. Watch it first for a chronology-focused marathon, or in its 2015 release position after Secrets of the Masters and before Kung Fu Panda 3.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is The Dragon Knight connected directly to Kung Fu Panda 4?
It is a later Po adventure and works well before Kung Fu Panda 4 in a practical chronology, but it is not required to understand the movie.
Are all the Kung Fu Panda movies included on one streaming service?
Not necessarily. Availability varies by country and changes over time. Check whether each title is included with a subscription or is available only to rent or buy.
The Bottom Line
Best overall answer: watch Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda 2, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Kung Fu Panda 4 in that order. Add the shorts, holiday special, and television series in release order if you want the complete franchise; use the practical chronological list only if you specifically want the prequel material and broad in-universe eras arranged first.
