The seven theatrical Jurassic Park films can be watched in a straightforward order: their chronological sequence is also their release order. The story begins with the creation of the first dinosaur park, moves through the abandoned breeding facilities on Isla Sorna, and eventually follows dinosaurs as they spread beyond the islands and into the wider world.
The Jurassic Park movies in chronological order
For a movie-only marathon, watch the films in this sequence:
| # | Film | Release year | Place in the story |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jurassic Park | 1993 | The original Isla Nublar disaster |
| 2 | The Lost World: Jurassic Park | 1997 | Four years later, on Isla Sorna |
| 3 | Jurassic Park III | 2001 | A later expedition to Isla Sorna |
| 4 | Jurassic World | 2015 | The fully operational park era |
| 5 | Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom | 2018 | Three years after the second park disaster |
| 6 | Jurassic World Dominion | 2022 | Dinosaurs living across the human world |
| 7 | Jurassic World Rebirth | 2025 | Five years after Dominion |
1. Jurassic Park (1993)
Steven Spielberg’s original film establishes the scientific and commercial experiment that drives the entire series. John Hammond has used genetic technology to recreate dinosaurs and build a theme park on Isla Nublar. Before the park can open to the public, a security failure allows the animals to escape containment.
The film is the essential starting point because it introduces Isla Nublar, the park’s genetic technology, Hammond’s ambition, and the central problem of trying to control living animals as if they were attractions.

2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
The Lost World takes place four years after the Isla Nublar disaster. The action shifts to Isla Sorna, also called Site B. It was the dinosaurs’ former breeding island, where the animals developed away from the public park.
Ian Malcolm returns as the central character and travels to the island to investigate its dinosaur population. The change of setting expands the series beyond Hammond’s failed park and shows what happens when the animals are allowed to live and reproduce without human supervision.
3. Jurassic Park III (2001)
Dr. Alan Grant returns for another expedition to Isla Sorna. The film follows the events of The Lost World and completes the original Jurassic Park trilogy.
Although it is shorter and more directly focused on a rescue mission than the first two films, its position in the timeline is unambiguous: watch it after The Lost World, before the series jumps forward to the reopening of a dinosaur theme park.

4. Jurassic World (2015)
Jurassic World is set 22 years after the first Jurassic Park. Hammond’s original idea has finally become a functioning attraction on Isla Nublar, with visitors able to see genetically recreated dinosaurs in a fully operational park.
The park’s attempt to keep audiences interested leads to the creation of a genetically engineered dinosaur. When the animal escapes, the successful attraction becomes another large-scale containment failure. The film also begins the separate but connected Jurassic World trilogy, while continuing the consequences established by the original movies.
5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
The next film takes place three years after the destruction of Jurassic World. Isla Nublar has been abandoned, and a volcanic eruption threatens the dinosaurs still living there.
Owen Grady and Claire Dearing return to the island as part of an effort to rescue the surviving animals. The story moves the franchise beyond the question of whether dinosaurs can be kept inside a park. By the end of this stage, the consequences of the island experiments are no longer limited to Isla Nublar.

Dominion is set four years after Isla Nublar’s destruction. Dinosaurs now live throughout the human world rather than being confined to the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World islands.
The film brings together the leading characters from both trilogies. That makes it the payoff to the original sequence of island disasters and to the Jurassic World story, so it should not be skipped or moved earlier in a first-time viewing order.

7. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)
Jurassic World Rebirth takes place five years after Jurassic World Dominion. By this point, dinosaurs have largely disappeared from most of the planet and survive mainly in isolated equatorial environments.
The film follows a new team investigating a former Jurassic Park research facility. Because its story is explicitly set after Dominion, it is the final entry in the current chronological movie order.

Is the release order different from the chronological order?
No. For the theatrical films, there is no alternate timeline puzzle to solve. The correct chronological order is:
- Jurassic Park (1993)
- The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
- Jurassic Park III (2001)
- Jurassic World (2015)
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
- Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
- Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)
The 14-year gap between Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World is a gap in production and release, not an indication that viewers need to rearrange the films. The fourth film’s story itself takes place 22 years after the original.
Optional Jurassic Park stories
Several connected titles can be added to a larger franchise watch-through, but they are not part of the seven-film theatrical list.
Rank #4
Battle at Big Rock (2019)
This 10-minute short is set one year after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It follows a family’s encounter with dinosaurs in Big Rock National Park, after the animals have begun appearing outside the former park locations.
If you include it, watch it after Fallen Kingdom and before Dominion.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022)
Camp Cretaceous is an animated series set within the timeline of Jurassic World. It is not a feature film and overlaps with events from the movies, so adding it requires a more detailed episode-by-episode viewing plan. For a theatrical movie marathon, leave it out.
The Dominion prologue
A short prologue was released in connection with Jurassic World Dominion. It is supplementary material rather than a separate full-length movie. The theatrical film remains the next main installment after Fallen Kingdom.
Common ordering mistakes
- Watching Rebirth before Dominion: Rebirth is set five years after Dominion, so it belongs at the end.
- Putting Battle at Big Rock before Fallen Kingdom: The short takes place after the island’s destruction and depicts dinosaurs already entering the human world.
- Treating Camp Cretaceous as a movie: It is an animated series with overlapping events, not an eighth theatrical film.
- Starting with Jurassic World: It begins a new trilogy, but it is not a reboot. Its story follows the original film by 22 years and works best after the first trilogy.
Best viewing plan
For the cleanest first watch, view the seven theatrical films in order without inserting the optional material. After Fallen Kingdom, add Battle at Big Rock if you want a brief bridge to the world shown in Dominion. Watch Camp Cretaceous separately if you want to explore the overlapping animated storyline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest Value
- Runtime: 884 minutes
The resulting movie marathon is simple: start with Hammond’s first park, follow the consequences through Isla Sorna and the rebuilt Isla Nublar attraction, then finish with dinosaurs living beyond the islands in Dominion and the isolated post-Dominion world of Rebirth.
