RaiPlay is the official way to stream Rai 2 live, replay recently broadcast programmes and browse Rai’s on-demand documentary catalogue. Open RaiPlay, choose the live-channels area for the current Rai 2 feed, use the TV guide for recent broadcasts, or search the documentary catalogue for a particular title. The exact programme you can play depends on streaming rights in the country where you are watching.
You can use a computer, phone, tablet or connected Smart TV. If your television is not already linked to RaiPlay, Rai provides both a numeric-code pairing method and an email-and-password method. The instructions below cover each route, what to do when an episode is missing and how viewing from outside Italy differs.
What you can watch on RaiPlay
Rai’s RaiPlay service combines three different ways to access Rai 2 material. Keeping them separate makes it easier to find the programme you want:

RaiPlay’s catalogue is not a permanent archive. A programme can disappear, have only selected episodes, or be unavailable in one country while playable in another. Rai has publicly explained that rights expiry required videos from a Report investigation to be removed, illustrating why a previously working link may stop playing.

How to watch Rai 2 live
On a computer or mobile device
- Open RaiPlay at rai.it and enter the live-TV or live-channels section. The service describes all Rai television channels as available in live streaming.
- Select Rai 2 from the channel list. If the channel tile is not immediately visible, use the live page’s channel selector rather than the on-demand search box.
- Start playback. A live stream normally opens at the point currently being broadcast; it is not the same as selecting an earlier programme from the guide.
- If playback is blocked, note the wording of the message and your location. A rights restriction, an account prompt or a temporary technical problem requires a different fix; the troubleshooting section below explains how to distinguish them.
RaiPlay’s live page is the appropriate route when you want the scheduled Rai 2 feed, including programmes that have not yet appeared in the replay catalogue. The service does not provide a guarantee that every live stream is playable worldwide, so viewers outside Italy should test the Rai 2 tile from their actual destination.
Using a connected television
Open the RaiPlay app on the Smart TV, choose the live-channels area and select Rai 2. If the app asks you to sign in or associate the television, follow the pairing procedure in the next section. You do not need to buy a television, antenna or streaming stick simply to use the documented RaiPlay route; Rai’s support instructions cover an already connected Smart TV and an existing account.
How to catch up with a recent Rai 2 programme
- Open RaiPlay and go to the TV guide, replay or similarly labelled catch-up area. Labels can vary slightly between the website, mobile app and television app.
- Move to the date on which the Rai 2 programme aired. Rai’s current service overview describes a guide that lets viewers revisit programmes transmitted during the previous week.
- Choose the Rai 2 entry and open the programme page. Check that the episode, date and channel match what you intended to watch before pressing play.
- Select the playback control. If the entry is listed but cannot start, read the on-screen notice; the title may be restricted by rights rather than missing because of a device fault.
The “previous week” description is a general service capability, not a promise that every Rai 2 broadcast remains available for seven days. Distribution agreements can shorten or remove replay access, and a programme may be published as only some episodes. When the guide does not contain the broadcast, search RaiPlay by programme name as a second check; if neither route returns a playable page, there may be no current catch-up rights for your location.
How to find Rai 2 documentaries on demand
Browse the documentary category
- From RaiPlay’s home or catalogue navigation, open the Documentaries category. Rai lists documentaries among its on-demand content areas.
- Scan the available collections and open a title’s detail page. Read the description and episode list because a series page can contain more than one season or a mixture of clips and full episodes.
- Start the episode that is available to you. If a thumbnail appears but playback is disabled, treat that as an availability or rights issue rather than assuming the entire category is broken.
Search by programme title
- Use RaiPlay’s search field and enter the documentary’s exact title, or a distinctive part of it.
- Open the result that identifies the programme, season or episode rather than a news item or short clip with a similar name.
- Confirm the result is offered in your country by attempting playback. Rai’s catalogue can change, so an older article or search-engine result is not evidence that a title is still streamable.
The documentary category is the best starting point when you want something to watch by subject. Search is faster when you already know the title, but neither method supplies a guaranteed, permanent list of Rai 2 documentaries. Availability is determined by the catalogue shown to your account and location at the time you look.

Rai’s Smart TV association instructions state that a user who is already registered can connect the television in two ways. The television must be online and the RaiPlay app must be open.

Method 1: numeric code (the required route for social-login accounts)
- Launch RaiPlay on the Smart TV and choose the option to associate or sign in the device.
- Wait for the television to display its temporary numeric code.
- On a phone, tablet or computer, open RaiPlay’s device-association route shown by the television and enter that code.
- Sign in to the RaiPlay account when prompted and confirm the association.
- Return to the television app. Once the code is accepted, the TV should load the account and let you open live channels, the guide and on-demand pages allowed for that account.
Rai specifically identifies code pairing for accounts created through a social login. Those credentials cannot be entered as if they were a separate RaiPlay email-and-password account.
Method 2: email and password on the television
- Choose the email-and-password sign-in option in the Smart TV app.
- Enter the email address and password used for the RaiPlay account with the television remote.
- Submit the form and wait for the account home screen to load.
If the TV offers both methods, the code is usually quicker because it avoids typing a long password with a remote. If you no longer know the account credentials, use the recovery option presented by RaiPlay rather than creating another account immediately; a second account will not contain the first account’s saved settings.
Is RaiPlay free, and do you have to register?
Rai’s contact-centre index includes questions about whether RaiPlay is free, where it can be watched and how registration works; the index itself does not provide the answers. An older Rai instruction document described registration as free and said registration was required for on-demand content. Because those instructions are not a current terms-of-service statement, check the registration prompt and current help pages at the time you sign up instead of treating the older wording as a permanent price guarantee.
For the practical task of watching Rai 2, start with the current RaiPlay interface. If live viewing opens without an account, you can watch the channel immediately; if a replay or documentary asks you to sign in, complete the registration flow displayed there. Use the same account when pairing a Smart TV so that the device association and any account-specific access remain together.
Watching Rai 2 from outside Italy
Rai’s international-rights policy has historically described RaiPlay as offering only content for which Rai has rights abroad. That document is older and does not establish a current country-by-country list, a guaranteed overseas Rai 2 stream or availability of any particular documentary.

- Connect from the country in which you actually intend to watch; availability can change by territory.
- Open RaiPlay and search for Rai 2 or the documentary title.
- Try the live tile or programme page. The playback result in that country is the useful test for that specific title.
- If the page says the content is unavailable, do not assume that changing devices will make it playable. The restriction may be territorial rights.
Rai’s Contact Center lists the literal question “RaiPlay è disponibile se ti connetti dall’estero?” (“Is RaiPlay available if you connect from abroad?”), but the index does not publish a universal answer for every destination. Treat overseas access as title- and territory-specific, and recheck when a programme’s rights may have changed.

Rai’s support index phrases the underlying issue as “Perché alcuni contenuti non sono disponibili o sono pubblicati solo pochi episodi?” (“Why are some contents unavailable or are only a few episodes published?”). The wording reflects a real catalogue condition: publication is governed by rights and release decisions, not simply by whether a programme aired on television.

Troubleshoot playback in the right order
- Identify the mode. Confirm whether you are trying live TV, replay or an on-demand documentary. A missing replay episode cannot be fixed by repeatedly refreshing the live player.
- Check the territory. If you are abroad, test the same title from the country where you are watching. Rights messages are different from ordinary buffering errors.
- Try RaiPlay’s own navigation. Open the live page, guide or documentary category instead of an old bookmarked URL. Catalogue pages can be reorganised.
- Test another programme. If another RaiPlay title plays, the problem is likely specific to the first title’s rights or listing. If nothing plays, inspect the account, app and network connection.
- On a Smart TV, redo association. Sign out and repeat the numeric-code process. Use email and password only when those are the credentials for the RaiPlay account.
- Recheck later for temporary faults. A short-lived service interruption can affect live playback without changing catalogue rights. If the same rights message persists, treat it as an availability limitation rather than a network fault.
What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you
Rai’s public pages establish the access routes: live Rai channels, a recent-programme guide/replay function, a documentary category and Smart TV account association. They do not establish an exhaustive current list of Rai 2 documentaries, an exact expiry date for a particular title or worldwide access to the live stream. Those details must be checked in RaiPlay from the viewer’s location.
For international distribution context, Rai Com’s international market page describes Rai’s broader sales and distribution activity, but it is not a substitute for testing a RaiPlay playback page. The international-rights policy document is likewise useful for understanding why territories differ, not for proving that a particular country can watch today’s Rai 2 feed.
Bottom line for Rai 2 viewers
Use RaiPlay’s live-channels section for the current Rai 2 broadcast, its TV guide/replay area for recent programmes and its documentary category or search for on-demand titles. Pair a Smart TV with the numeric code when using social-login credentials, or sign in directly with email and password for a standard RaiPlay account. If a title is missing, only a few episodes appear or playback fails abroad, check the programme from the actual viewing country: rights and publication windows, rather than the device, are often decisive.
