How to Watch PBS NOVA Documentaries Online and Find Related Episodes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dependable way to watch NOVA is through the official PBS NOVA page on PBS.org or the PBS app. Some episodes stream free for a limited period, while others are available only to eligible PBS Passport members. Because rights and local station offerings change by title, always open the individual episode listing before you settle on a viewing plan.

Where can you watch NOVA online?

PBS identifies two primary streaming routes for NOVA: PBS.org in a supported web browser and the PBS app on supported mobile, television and streaming platforms. The same program can have different access terms from one episode to the next. A recently broadcast episode may be free for a limited window, an older episode may be in the PBS Passport library, and another title may have disappeared because PBS no longer holds streaming rights.

PBS describes the service this way: “NOVA is available to stream on pbs.org and the PBS app.” You do not need to buy a particular streaming device simply to begin; PBS.org works in a supported browser, and the app runs on many existing devices.

Route Best use What you need Important limits
PBS.org Watch an episode in a computer browser or search by title, subject or show A current supported browser and, when required, a PBS account A title may be restricted to Passport members or may have expired
PBS app Watch on a phone, tablet, television or streaming player A supported device; the app is free to download Some videos still require Passport, and supported platforms can change
PBS Passport Get extended access to eligible programs in the Passport library An activated benefit from a participating local PBS station and the linked PBS account Each station sets its own eligibility rules; Passport cannot restore rights that have expired
Local station broadcast or livestream Catch a scheduled showing or possible rebroadcast Access to the relevant local station’s schedule or livestream Availability is local, and program rights vary by station
Third-party purchase Find a title that PBS no longer streams A store listing for the exact episode or collection PBS says this is possible for some titles, not guaranteed for every NOVA episode

PBS.org in a browser

Open the PBS NOVA show page, choose an episode, and start playback from its individual listing. PBS also provides site search, which is useful when you know an episode title or only remember its subject. Current versions of major desktop browsers are supported; if playback fails in an old or unusual browser, try a current mainstream browser before assuming the episode is unavailable.

The PBS app

The PBS app provides the same general catalog on compatible devices. PBS lists support for mobile devices, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Android TV, Samsung TV, Vizio, Google TV, Comcast Xfinity and additional platforms. The exact platform list is subject to change, so check PBS’s current app information when setting up a new device. Installing the app does not make every video free: access rules remain attached to the individual program.

PBS Passport

Passport is not a separate commercial subscription that anyone can activate under one nationwide price. It is a member benefit supplied by participating local PBS stations to eligible donors and supporters. The station determines its qualification requirements, so the correct amount or donation rule depends on where you live. NOVA is included among the programs represented in the Passport library, but a Passport label does not mean that every NOVA episode is permanently available.

Local broadcasts and purchases

If a streaming listing has vanished, look at your local PBS station’s broadcast schedule. A station may schedule a rebroadcast even when an online stream is no longer available. PBS also notes that some unavailable titles may be sold by a third-party store, including services such as Amazon Video or Apple iTunes. Treat that as a title-by-title possibility: search for the exact NOVA episode, confirm the edition and runtime, and check the store’s current listing before paying.

How to find a specific NOVA episode

Use the following process whenever you want one particular documentary rather than whatever happens to be featured on the home page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start at the official NOVA show page. Open the PBS NOVA page and review its sections for Episodes, Specials, Collections, and Clips & Previews. The page displays current titles and descriptions, but its catalog changes as programs enter and leave their viewing windows.
  2. Search by the strongest clue you have. If you know the title, search that exact phrase. If you do not, search for a distinctive subject, place, scientist, event or technology together with “NOVA.” PBS Help also recommends searching for a show or video by keyword and browsing the Shows area.
  3. Open the individual video listing. Do not rely on a search-result snippet or a collection page alone. The episode’s own page is where PBS shows the current video and its access status.
  4. Look for the Passport marker. PBS uses a blue compass-rose icon on a video thumbnail to identify Passport videos. Its presence means the video is intended for activated Passport members; it does not indicate that a title is available in every country or for an unlimited period.
  5. Try playback before making another plan. A video that is free to watch should begin from the listing. If PBS asks you to sign in or indicates that the program is for Passport members, use the account associated with your station benefit or decide whether another route is more practical.
  6. Record the exact title. NOVA has specials, clips and episodes with similar subjects. Save the full title and, if shown, the season or episode information so that a later broadcast or store search matches the same program rather than a similarly named clip.

When is NOVA free to watch?

“Free” on PBS is usually a statement about the current access window, not a promise that a documentary will remain online indefinitely. PBS says many new episodes of programs such as NOVA stream at no additional cost for a limited time. When that window closes, the same episode may require Passport, move to another rights window, or become unavailable altogether.

Some PBS videos can be watched without a fee or an account, while other videos are restricted to Passport members. The individual listing is the authoritative check. The fact that one NOVA episode plays without signing in does not establish that every episode does, and a Passport requirement on one title does not prove that the whole series is locked.

PBS Help describes the Passport library as containing more than 1,000 episodes across PBS programming. That is a broad library figure, not a count of NOVA episodes. PBS does not publish a fixed NOVA episode total that remains reliable as titles and rights change, so avoid treating a search-result count as a permanent catalog number.

How to activate and use PBS Passport for NOVA

Passport access is tied to a participating local station and the PBS account you use to sign in. Follow these steps rather than assuming that a contribution to any PBS-related organization automatically unlocks the videos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify your local PBS station. Use the station associated with your viewing area and read its current Passport eligibility information. Stations set their own requirements, so there is no single nationwide contribution amount that applies to everyone.
  2. Meet the station’s supporter requirement. If you are already an eligible donor or supporter, the station can explain how the benefit is attached to your account. If you are not, review the station’s current terms before contributing.
  3. Use the correct PBS account. Sign in to PBS.org or the PBS app with the account connected to the station benefit. Creating or using a different account can make it appear that Passport has not been activated.
  4. Confirm the account indicator. PBS says a Passport icon beside your account name indicates that the benefit is linked. If it is missing, contact the station or follow PBS’s account-linking help rather than repeatedly attempting playback.
  5. Return to the NOVA episode listing. Open the title again and look for the blue compass-rose marker. Passport extends access only to programs that are currently in the Passport catalog; it does not override an expired streaming license.

Passport also does not eliminate geographic restrictions. Viewers outside the United States may be unable to stream a program because PBS does not hold rights in that country, even when the title appears in a general search.

Which devices and browsers work?

You can begin on PBS.org without purchasing hardware. A current desktop browser is enough for computer viewing, and the PBS app adds television and mobile options when your device is supported.

  • Enjoy the show in 4K Ultra HD, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

Browser viewing

  • Use a current version of a major desktop browser.
  • Open the episode from its PBS listing rather than an old bookmark to a retired video page.
  • If one browser fails, test the same listing in another current browser. This helps distinguish a browser problem from a rights or catalog problem.

App and television viewing

PBS lists the app for mobile devices and for platforms including Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Android TV, Samsung TV, Vizio, Google TV and Comcast Xfinity, with additional platforms supported. Platform support is updated over time. Check the current PBS app information before buying a device solely for NOVA, because a device listed today may not represent the entire future catalog or every account feature.

What a device cannot change

Changing from a browser to a television app does not change the rights attached to an episode. A title that has expired, is limited to Passport, or is unavailable in your region will normally show the same restriction across supported devices. Use the episode page and your account status to diagnose access before replacing equipment.

Why does PBS say a NOVA video is unavailable?

The message “This video is unavailable” has several possible explanations. PBS specifically identifies rights expiration, geographic rights, and local station Passport availability as common reasons.

The streaming rights expired

PBS removes or disables videos when its streaming rights end. This is the most important reason an episode can appear in a search result but refuse to play. The listing may remain useful as a record of the title even after the video has left the catalog.

You are outside the United States

PBS may not hold streaming rights in your country. A program that plays for a viewer in the United States can therefore be unavailable elsewhere without any problem with the account or device.

Your local station does not offer the Passport benefit

In the United States, PBS can localize Passport access to a station that does not provide the benefit for your account or area. Confirm which station is connected to your PBS profile and contact that station if the benefit indicator is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The title is restricted to Passport

If the blue compass-rose icon appears, sign in with the account linked to an eligible station benefit. Without that activation, the app or website may show the title but block playback.

A practical troubleshooting order

  1. Reopen the current NOVA show page and search for the exact episode title.
  2. Open the individual listing and read its access indicator instead of relying on a search preview.
  3. Check whether your PBS account shows the Passport icon if the title is marked for members.
  4. Verify your location and the local station associated with your account.
  5. Try PBS.org in a current browser if the app fails, or the app if browser playback fails.
  6. If PBS confirms that rights expired, check the local station schedule for a rebroadcast.
  7. Search a legitimate third-party store for the exact title only if PBS indicates that purchase may be an option.

How to find related NOVA episodes and documentaries

Finding a related program is easiest when you search by subject rather than by season number. NOVA covers many scientific fields, and the title of a documentary may not contain the phrase you remember from a description.

Search several distinctive terms

Begin with the most specific phrase you remember, then try combinations such as a place plus an event, a technology plus its application, or a scientific subject plus “NOVA.” If the first search returns a clip or preview, open the result and use its wording as a second search. PBS’s search tool is designed to locate shows and videos by keyword.

Use the NOVA page’s categories

The show page separates Episodes, Specials, Collections, and Clips & Previews. Browse Episodes for full installments, Specials for programs presented outside the regular episode list, Collections for grouped subject matter, and Clips & Previews when you are trying to identify a documentary from a short segment. A clip can help confirm the topic, but it is not necessarily the full program.

Follow the title’s subject trail

Once you find one relevant episode, read its description and note the scientific terms, locations and people named there. Search those terms separately to uncover other NOVA listings. This method is more reliable than assuming that adjacent episode numbers cover the same subject.

Check access for every related result

Related titles can have different rights. One may be free during a current window, another may display the Passport icon, and a third may have no playable video. Open each individual listing and check its status rather than applying the access terms from the first result to the rest.

Choosing the right route for your situation

  • You want a newly featured episode: Start on the NOVA page or PBS app and check whether the individual listing plays without Passport.
  • You want an older episode: Search PBS by exact title, then look for the Passport marker and sign in if you have an activated station benefit.
  • You watch mostly on a television: Use the PBS app on a supported platform you already own; no particular device is required if PBS.org meets your needs.
  • You cannot find a playable stream: Determine whether the problem is rights expiration, geography or station-linked Passport access. Then check your local schedule and, if appropriate, a legitimate store listing.
  • You are exploring a subject: Search by several topic keywords, browse NOVA’s collections and specials, and verify every related episode individually.

What can change after you find an episode?

PBS catalogs are not static. New episodes can receive a temporary free window, Passport titles can change as licenses are renewed or end, and local schedules can add or remove rebroadcasts. Device support and app capabilities can also be revised. For that reason, save the episode title rather than assuming a saved link will remain playable, and recheck the listing whenever you return to watch.

The most reliable workflow is therefore simple: locate NOVA through PBS, open the exact episode page, read its current access status, and use the account, device or local-station option that matches that status. If no stream exists, an expired right—not a missing subscription or faulty television—may be the explanation.
