Start at PBS.org or in the official PBS App. Search the documentary title, open its program page, and check the Episodes or Specials section for a playable video and any expiration date. Many programs are free for a limited period after broadcast. If a video carries PBS’s blue compass-rose badge, it requires an activated PBS Passport benefit from an eligible local public-television station. Passport can extend access to some titles, but it cannot restore a video after its streaming rights expire. PBS Documentaries on Prime Video is a separate channel and does not unlock Passport videos.
Where PBS documentaries stream
PBS has two principal ways to watch its documentaries online: the public video service at PBS.org and the PBS App. Both let you search by title and open a show page containing available episodes, specials, clips, previews, and program information. A documentary’s presence on a PBS page does not guarantee that a full episode is currently playable; rights can limit the video even while the page remains online.
When a program is available, select the video from the episode or special listing rather than relying on a general web search result. The listing is where PBS identifies whether the stream is free, Passport-only, geographically restricted, or approaching its expiration date. PBS’s guide to Passport viewing explains the search and playback process at How to watch Passport videos online.
How to find a documentary on PBS.org
- Search the exact title. Use the search field on PBS.org, or search inside the PBS App. Include a subtitle, season name, or the filmmaker’s name if the title is common.
- Open the official program page. Confirm that the page describes the documentary you want. PBS can have similarly named programs, specials, and short clips.
- Check Episodes and Specials. PBS says videos may appear in either section. A page with no listed episodes may still provide clips, previews, background information, or links to buy or rent the program elsewhere.
- Inspect each video thumbnail. A blue-and-white compass rose identifies a PBS Passport video. A show page can mix free videos and Passport videos, so do not assume that every episode has the same access requirement.
- Read the availability information. If PBS displays an expiration date, treat that date as the best title-specific guide. Rights can differ between episodes and can change after a page is published.
- Start playback before making another subscription decision. A documentary that is currently free on PBS.org does not require Passport for that viewing window.
The visual badge is explained in PBS Help’s guide, How can I tell which are PBS Passport videos?. Use the badge on the specific video, not a general assumption about the series.

When a PBS documentary appears after broadcast
PBS Help says, “Typically, shows are available for streaming the day after they are broadcast on television and are usually available online for up to two weeks after.” That is general guidance, not a promise for every documentary. A program’s rights agreement, station schedule, edition, and territory can produce a shorter or longer window.
For a documentary that has just aired, check PBS.org the following day and open the title’s episode page. Look for the expiration notice while the video is still available. The PBS explanation of post-broadcast availability is I want to watch a PBS program that was broadcast but is not yet available online.
- It is not listed yet: wait until the day after broadcast, then search the program page again. A broadcast can finish before the online file is posted.
- It is listed but will not play: read the message for a Passport requirement, territory restriction, or rights limitation.
- An expiration date is shown: watch before that date; do not rely on the general two-week description.
- The page has information but no episode: PBS may have retained the page for clips, previews, details, or third-party purchase links after the full stream ended.
What PBS Passport changes
PBS Passport is a member benefit connected to an eligible local public-television station. It provides extended access to selected PBS videos, including some documentaries, after a viewer has activated the benefit and signed in with the account linked to that membership. Passport is not a general key that opens every PBS program.
To use it, you need both an eligible station membership and an activated PBS account. PBS’s setup instructions are in Getting Started with PBS Passport, while the account requirement is covered in Do I have to activate Passport in order to watch PBS videos?.

How to activate and sign in
- Join or confirm membership with an eligible local PBS station.
- Use the station’s Passport activation process to connect the membership benefit to a PBS account.
- Sign in to that same account on PBS.org or in the PBS App.
- Open the documentary’s page and select the video marked with the compass rose.
If you have donated but the account does not show Passport, verify that you used the email address associated with the station benefit and complete activation rather than creating an unrelated PBS login. A station membership and a PBS account are related for access, but they are not interchangeable credentials.

How to recognize Passport-only episodes
The blue compass-rose symbol appears on the thumbnail or video listing for Passport content. It identifies the individual video that requires the benefit. A series can therefore contain a free episode, a Passport episode, and an unavailable episode at the same time. Always inspect the exact documentary or episode you intend to watch.
What Passport cannot do
Passport does not override a rights restriction. If PBS marks a title as expired even for Passport members, PBS says its streaming rights have ended and the video cannot be offered online. Passport also does not provide offline downloads for its videos. PBS discusses those limits and availability questions in How to watch Passport videos online and Common Questions.
Is the documentary on PBS Passport?
There is no permanent, complete public Passport catalog that can reliably answer that question for every title. PBS says streaming rights and legal issues prevent it from publishing a complete list. The practical test is title-specific: search the program, open the current episode page, and look for the compass rose and playback instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
A documentary can move in or out of Passport as rights change. A program that was available to members previously may later show an expiration notice, while another title may appear after a new rights agreement. PBS’s explanation is What shows are available with PBS Passport?. Avoid relying on an old list, a search snippet, or a claim that an entire series is included.
What to do when the documentary has already aired
First, search PBS again
Open PBS.org or the PBS App and search the exact title. If the video is still in the normal post-broadcast window, it may be available without a membership. If it has moved behind Passport, the compass rose will appear on the listing and an activated member account is required.

- Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.
Then check the episode status
- Playable without a badge: watch it during the current free rights window.
- Compass rose visible: sign in with the activated Passport account tied to your station benefit.
- Expiration message: the online rights period has ended or is ending; PBS cannot extend it merely because you are a Passport member.
- No full episode, but a standing program page: look for clips, previews, program information, or a purchase link supplied by the page.
Do not interpret a missing episode as proof that PBS has abandoned the program. PBS may retain a page for reference while removing the full stream. Conversely, a page that still appears in search results is not evidence that the documentary remains playable.
PBS.org, Passport, Prime Video, and purchase links compared
| Route | What it provides | Requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PBS.org or the PBS App | Free videos and some full episodes, subject to title-specific rights | A PBS account may be needed for some functions; free playback does not require Passport | Availability can be limited by time, territory, or episode |
| PBS Passport | Extended access to selected PBS videos | Activated benefit from an eligible local public-television station and the linked PBS account | It does not include every PBS title, does not bypass expired rights, and does not support offline downloads |
| PBS Documentaries on Prime Video | A separate subscription channel carrying PBS documentary programming | Its own Prime Video channel subscription and compatible account | It does not unlock Passport videos on PBS.org or in the PBS App; catalog and price should be checked currently |
| Third-party purchase or rental link | Possible way to obtain a documentary when the PBS page points elsewhere | Whatever account and payment method the linked provider requires | Only some PBS pages provide such links, and the offer is title-specific |
PBS describes the separation between its own services and other streaming services in Watching PBS videos on other streaming services. A Prime Video channel subscription and a local-station Passport benefit are different products: paying for one does not activate the other.

Watching on a television, phone, or computer
On a computer or mobile browser, open PBS.org, sign in if the video requires Passport, and play from the documentary’s page. In the PBS App, use the search function or browse to the show page, then open Episodes or Specials.
PBS’s Passport setup help lists support for streaming platforms including Amazon Fire, Roku, and Apple TV. Install the PBS App on the compatible device, sign in with the same PBS account that has the activated Passport benefit, and search for the documentary. The hardware itself supplies no membership: owning a Fire TV device, Roku, or Apple TV does not grant Passport or change a title’s rights.

PBS filters online video geographically. PBS says Passport is available to members in the United States and its territories and in Canada, but a specific program can still be unavailable because its rights do not cover your location. A documentary’s availability in one country, state, or station market is not proof that it will play elsewhere.
If playback is blocked, confirm your physical location, turn off any network configuration that makes your location appear elsewhere, and read the message on the episode page. Do not assume that Passport membership removes geographic restrictions; the program’s license still controls distribution.
Offline viewing is another limitation. PBS says Passport videos are not available for download for later offline playback. Plan to stream while connected rather than expecting a download option in the app.

The normal free window ended
Many broadcast programs are posted the day after transmission and remain online for roughly two weeks, but that is only PBS’s general pattern. Once the title-specific window closes, the free stream can disappear even though the documentary page remains searchable.

The title moved to Passport
Some videos are available to everyone initially and later require Passport. Look for the compass rose and sign in with the account linked to your station benefit. A missing badge means the cause may be something else, such as rights or location.
Rights expired for everyone
When PBS says the streaming rights have expired, neither a free account nor Passport can restore the video. The page may continue to host clips, previews, details, or a link to another provider.
Your app or account is out of sync
- Sign out and back in with the PBS account used during Passport activation.
- Check the documentary in a desktop browser to distinguish an app problem from a rights decision.
- Update the PBS App and restart the streaming device.
- Search the exact title again in case you opened a clip page rather than the full episode.
- Read the current episode message before contacting support; it may identify the restriction directly.
A practical decision path
- Need a documentary that aired recently? Check PBS.org or the PBS App the next day, then read the expiration date on the episode page.
- Is the episode free? Play it without Passport and note the stated end date.
- Does it show the compass rose? Use an activated Passport benefit tied to an eligible local station and the matching PBS account.
- Is it unavailable even after signing in? Check for a geographic or rights message. Passport is not a universal catalog.
- Has the episode expired? Look for clips, previews, information, or a third-party purchase link on the remaining program page.
- Considering Prime Video? Treat PBS Documentaries on Prime Video as a separate channel. Verify that the exact documentary is in that channel’s current catalog before subscribing.
- Watching on a television? Use the PBS App on a supported Fire TV, Roku, or Apple TV device, but remember that hardware does not provide membership access.
What you can and cannot infer from a PBS program page
| What you see | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A playable episode with no compass rose | The episode is currently offered through that page without Passport under the displayed conditions | That it will remain free indefinitely or play in every country |
| A blue compass rose | That specific video is marked for Passport access | That every episode in the series requires Passport or that the title is permanently in the catalog |
| An expiration date | The page’s current title-specific availability warning | That another edition, territory, or episode has the same date |
| A program page with no full episode | The page may still contain reference material or links | That the documentary is available to stream somewhere else or that Passport can restore it |
Official help for unusual cases
Use PBS’s own help pages when the status is unclear. How to watch Passport videos online covers locating and playing member videos. Getting Started with PBS Passport explains activation. What shows are available with PBS Passport? explains why there is no complete catalog. Do I have to activate Passport in order to watch PBS videos? addresses account activation, while Common Questions covers geographic and download limitations.
For a documentary-specific viewing page, use the PBS program’s own instructions. For example, PBS’s POV How to Watch page demonstrates how a PBS strand can publish its own viewing guidance; the episode page, not a general promise about the strand, determines whether a particular film is currently playable.
Bottom line for finding a PBS documentary after broadcast
Search PBS.org or the PBS App by the exact title, open Episodes or Specials, and follow the access label and expiration date on that page. Watch the free stream during its rights window when available. If the video has the blue compass rose, activate and use Passport through an eligible local station, while remembering that Passport covers only selected titles and cannot revive expired rights. If PBS no longer offers the full episode, check the remaining page for clips or a legitimate purchase link, and treat PBS Documentaries on Prime Video as a separate service rather than a Passport substitute.
