How to Watch PBS Documentaries on Your TV, Phone, or Tablet

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can watch many PBS documentaries free on PBS.org with a supported computer browser, or use the PBS App on a compatible television, streaming device, iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet. PBS.org offers hundreds of episodes without an account; the PBS App requires you to sign in. PBS Passport, activated through a participating local PBS station, adds selected titles but does not unlock every documentary or prevent titles from expiring.

The right method depends on whether you want on-demand video or a live local broadcast, which device you own, your location, and whether the particular program requires Passport. Follow the route below that matches your situation.

Choose the PBS viewing route that fits your device

Route Where it works Account required? Passport required? Best for
PBS.org on a computer Current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge on an internet-connected computer Not for many episodes; PBS says hundreds are available without an account Only for titles marked as requiring or including Passport access Quick, free on-demand viewing
PBS App on a television or streaming device Supported smart TVs and devices such as Roku, Apple TV HD/4K, Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, Android TV, Google TV, Chromecast, Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 onward, VIZIO SmartCast, Comcast X1, Flex, and Xumo Stream Box; current Passport listings also include LG TVs running WebOS 23 or later Yes Only for Passport titles Watching on a large screen
PBS App on a phone or tablet iPhone and iPad, plus Android phones and tablets Yes Only for Passport titles Mobile on-demand viewing
Local PBS livestream PBS.org or the PBS App where the local station supplies a stream and your device is supported Availability and sign-in requirements can vary by platform No Watching a program as it airs

Device compatibility changes as manufacturers update operating systems and PBS changes its app. Check PBS’s current device list before buying hardware or troubleshooting an older television. A TV’s built-in web browser is not a supported substitute for the PBS App; PBS says smart-TV browsers can produce playback errors.

How to watch PBS documentaries free on PBS.org

Use a supported desktop or laptop browser

  1. Connect the computer to the internet. A stable connection is needed for the online player.
  2. Open a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
  3. Go to PBS.org and search for the documentary, series, or episode.
  4. Open the program page and select the available episode or video.
  5. Start playback. If an episode is offered without a Passport requirement, no account is needed.

PBS says hundreds of episodes can be watched directly on PBS.org without an account. That does not mean every documentary is free or permanently available. Program pages identify restrictions and, where applicable, show an expiration date beneath the description.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

When a PBS.org account helps

An account is useful when you want a consistent sign-in across devices, need to access Passport, or are prompted to authenticate for a particular video. You can create or use a PBS identity, or sign in with Google, Facebook, or Apple. If you have Passport, use the identity that your local station connected to the benefit; signing in with a different address can make a valid membership appear to be missing.

How to watch on a smart TV or streaming device

Supported platforms

The PBS App is listed for Roku, Apple TV HD and 4K, Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, Android TV, Google TV, Chromecast, Samsung Smart TVs made in 2017 or later, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, and Comcast X1, Flex, and Xumo Stream Box devices. The current Passport device information also names LG Smart TVs running WebOS 23 or later. Exact model and operating-system support can change, so verify your model against PBS’s latest list.

If your television cannot install the app, a supported streaming device connected through HDMI may be an option. The platform evidence supports the categories above, not a particular model, price, speed, or picture-quality claim. Check the device’s current PBS compatibility and your TV’s available HDMI input before purchasing.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Install and open the app

  1. Open your television or streaming device’s app store.
  2. Search for the official PBS App and install it. PBS says downloading and signing into the app does not itself require a fee.
  3. Launch the app and choose Sign In.
  4. Leave the code screen visible while you complete activation on another device.

Activate the TV with the seven-character code

  1. The PBS App displays a unique seven-character alphanumeric code for that television or streaming device. Some devices also show a QR code.
  2. On a phone or computer, open PBS.org/tv, or scan the QR code with your phone.
  3. Enter the code shown on the TV.
  4. Sign in with a PBS account, Google, Facebook, or Apple.
  5. If you use Passport, select the same identity that is linked to your local station benefit.
  6. Wait for the success message, then return to the PBS App on the TV. The app should refresh into the signed-in state.

The code is specific to that device and is used to connect the app to your account. If the code expires before you finish, restart the sign-in flow on the television to generate a new one rather than reusing the old code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to watch PBS documentaries on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device

  1. Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on an Android phone or tablet.
  2. Install the PBS App and open it.
  3. Choose Sign In and authenticate with a PBS account, Google, Facebook, or Apple.
  4. Search for the documentary and select an available episode.
  5. For Passport programming, confirm that the signed-in identity is the one attached to your station membership.

Mobile playback requires an internet connection. PBS currently says Passport videos cannot be downloaded for offline viewing, so the app is not a way to save documentaries for a flight or a location without service. Cellular data charges and video quality depend on your mobile plan and connection.

Sending video to a television

Chromecast and Google TV are among the platforms PBS lists for app support. Availability of casting controls can depend on the app version, phone, television, and network configuration. If casting is unreliable, install and activate the PBS App directly on the TV or streaming device instead of relying on a phone as the controller.

What PBS Passport adds—and what it does not

Passport is a local-station membership benefit

PBS Passport is offered through participating local PBS stations. It is optional: many PBS videos remain available without it. When a station grants Passport, you activate the benefit and then use the linked PBS, Google, Apple, or Facebook identity to sign in on PBS.org or the supported PBS App.

PBS gives a contribution example of $5 per month or $60 or more annually on its no-cable help page. That is an example stated by PBS, not a universal price. Contribution amounts, eligibility, and station terms vary by location; check your own station for the current requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no separate Passport app

Passport programs appear inside the regular PBS.org catalog and the regular PBS App. Look for the Passport indicator on a title, sign in with the account linked to your benefit, and play the video from the normal program page.

Passport does not guarantee permanent access

Streaming rights are title-specific. Some documentaries are Passport-only, while others remain available longer to members after general streaming rights end. PBS can still remove a Passport video when its rights expire. Check the expiration date shown beneath a program description rather than assuming that a series badge means every episode is available.

Can Passport only be used on a computer?

No. Passport works on supported televisions, streaming devices, iPhones, iPads, Android phones, Android tablets, and computers. On a TV, activate the PBS App with the seven-character code at PBS.org/tv. On a mobile device or computer, sign in directly. The requirement is a supported platform and the same account that your local station linked to Passport—not a particular screen size.

How to watch a PBS documentary live

Use your local station livestream

A local PBS station may stream its broadcast online while a documentary is airing. PBS.org livestream access does not require Passport or payment, but it is geographically limited to the station’s broadcast service area, and not every station provides an online stream.

  1. Open PBS.org and locate the live or local-station section.
  2. Select your local station, if PBS asks you to choose one.
  3. Start the live player when the station is streaming.

Live viewing is different from the on-demand catalog: a documentary may be available on the broadcast schedule or livestream even when its on-demand episode is unavailable, and the reverse can also occur.

Devices that support the PBS live stream

PBS’s live-stream FAQ lists selected devices, including Roku, Apple TV (fourth generation or newer), Amazon Fire devices, Android TV, iPhone and iPad, and Android mobile devices. The live-stream list is narrower than the general on-demand app list. A television that can play on-demand PBS videos may not support live streaming, so check the device-specific requirements.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why a documentary is unavailable

The title’s rights have expired

PBS distributes programs under time-limited rights. When those rights end, an episode can disappear from the free catalog or from Passport. The program page’s expiration information is the most useful indicator; a show’s continued existence as a series does not prove that a particular episode remains playable.

Your location is outside the permitted area

PBS notes geographic restrictions for online video. A program or local livestream may be visible in one country or station market and unavailable in another. A station livestream is specifically tied to that station’s broadcast service area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The program is broadcast-only or available elsewhere

Some programs may be offered only on broadcast or a live stream. PBS also notes that a title unavailable for PBS streaming might be offered for purchase from a third party. Do not infer that a missing PBS player means the documentary was never broadcast.

Your account is not the Passport-linked account

If a Passport title asks you to contribute or sign in, log out and try the identity your station used when it activated the benefit. Google, Apple, Facebook, and PBS sign-ins can represent different accounts even when they use the same person’s name.

Troubleshooting playback and activation

The TV code is rejected or the app does not update

  • Generate a fresh code by restarting Sign In in the TV app.
  • Enter all seven characters exactly as displayed, without adding spaces.
  • Complete activation at PBS.org/tv in the same browser session.
  • Confirm that you signed in with the account connected to Passport, if the video requires it.
  • After the success message, close and reopen the PBS App on the TV.

The app cannot be installed

  • Check the exact TV model and operating-system version against PBS’s current supported-device list.
  • For Samsung, the listed support begins with 2017 models; for LG Passport listings, WebOS 23 or later is named.
  • Update the television or streaming device software and retry the app store search.
  • If the TV is unsupported, use PBS.org on a computer or a supported HDMI streaming device.

Video buffers, stops, or shows a playback error

  • Use a stable internet connection and restart the router or access point if other streaming services are also failing.
  • Update the browser or PBS App.
  • On a computer, use a current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge release.
  • Do not switch to a smart-TV browser as a workaround; PBS says those browsers are unsupported and may cause playback errors.
  • Try the same title on another supported device to determine whether the problem is device-specific or title-specific.

The live stream is missing

  • Confirm that your selected station serves your current location.
  • Check whether the station actually provides a livestream; PBS says not all stations do.
  • Verify that your device is on the PBS live-stream support list, which is narrower than the on-demand list.
  • If the broadcast has ended, search the on-demand catalog; the episode may appear later, subject to rights.

Which option should you use?

Your situation Recommended first step Important limitation
You want to watch immediately on a laptop Open PBS.org in a current supported browser Only currently offered episodes play; many are free, but not all
You want the largest screen Install the PBS App on a supported TV or streaming device and activate it with the TV code Account sign-in is required
You have a Passport benefit Sign in with the account linked to your local station Passport titles can still expire
Your documentary is airing now Check your local PBS station’s livestream Availability is station- and location-specific
Your TV cannot run the app Use PBS.org on a computer or add a supported streaming device Check exact model and operating-system compatibility first
You need to watch without internet Plan another viewing method; PBS Passport does not provide downloads Offline playback is not supported

Key limitations to keep in mind

  • On-demand availability is determined episode by episode, not just by the documentary’s series name.
  • PBS.org can provide hundreds of episodes without an account, while the PBS App requires sign-in.
  • Passport is optional, station-based, and title-specific; it is not an all-access catalog.
  • Passport has no separate app and currently does not support offline downloads.
  • Live streams can be limited by station service area and by device model.
  • Supported-device lists change, so confirm current requirements before replacing a television or buying a streaming device.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
