Netflix’s official player does not document a built-in way to show two subtitle languages at once. The practical workaround is to play Netflix in Chrome on a desktop or laptop and use a browser extension such as Language Reactor or EnjoySubs to overlay a second subtitle track. This is different from the Netflix app’s ordinary subtitle selection, and it only works with languages available for the title—or, with some tools, a machine-generated translation.
What you need
- A Netflix account with access to the title.
- A Windows or Mac desktop or laptop running Google Chrome.
- A dual-subtitle extension installed in Chrome.
- The two subtitle languages you want, if using Netflix’s own subtitle tracks, available for that title.
Netflix’s official instructions explain how to choose an audio track and one subtitle language using the player’s Audio & Subtitles menu. Its help pages do not document a native control for displaying two subtitle languages simultaneously. Extensions add a second line over the browser player; they are third-party tools, not Netflix features.

Method 1: Use Language Reactor
Language Reactor is the strongest fit if you want more than two lines on screen. Its Chrome listing describes Netflix support on desktop and laptop computers running Windows and macOS, along with learning tools such as dictionary lookup and playback controls.
- In Chrome on your computer, open the Language Reactor listing in the Chrome Web Store.
- Select Add to Chrome and review and approve the requested permissions.
- Open Netflix in the same Chrome browser, sign in, and start a title.
- Open the Language Reactor controls that appear in or alongside the player. Choose the subtitle language you are learning and the translation language, then enable the dual or bilingual display. The controls can change, so use the labels in the current extension interface rather than relying on a fixed icon location.
- Adjust playback or learning options to suit your pace. The extension’s official guide describes replay, subtitle-by-subtitle navigation, auto-pause, dictionary lookup, and keyboard shortcuts.
Some useful shortcuts listed in the guide are A for the previous subtitle, S to replay the current subtitle, D for the next subtitle, and Q to toggle auto-pause. W or Space plays or pauses; E shows the next blurred subtitle; R saves the current subtitle; and Ctrl/Cmd+C copies the current sentence. Shortcuts and behavior can vary with settings or updates.

Language Reactor has a free mode, but not every feature is free. Its FAQ associates machine translation and saving new words or phrases with Pro features. The FAQ also describes a quota of about five hours per day for new, previously untranslated machine-translated content. Check the current plan details before relying on a particular feature.
Method 2: Use EnjoySubs for a simpler overlay
EnjoySubs is geared toward viewers who mainly want two subtitle lines without a larger study interface. Its Chrome Web Store listing advertises free, unlimited dual subtitles for Netflix using the subtitle tracks Netflix already provides, with no AI translation or external subtitle files.

- Open Netflix in Chrome and play a title.
- Use the extension overlay to choose two languages that Netflix offers for that title.
- If needed, adjust the extension’s subtitle size or placement so the two lines are readable.
EnjoySubs is an independent third-party extension, not a Netflix product. Its listing advertises the Netflix dual-subtitle mode as free; features for other platforms are offered through paid plans, whose listed prices may change. Its privacy statements are vendor claims, not an independent guarantee. Do not assume it works inside Netflix’s phone, tablet, smart-TV, console, or streaming-box apps.

Another option: Netflix Dual Subtitle for learning languages
Netflix Dual Subtitle for learning languages advertises simultaneous subtitles, phrase controls, word-saving, and auto-translated subtitles. Its Chrome Web Store listing showed version 2.5.1, updated June 30, 2026, a three-day trial followed by an advertised $0.97 monthly price, and a 3.2/5 rating from 68 ratings at the time reflected in the research. Those figures and features can change. The listing also disclosed handling personally identifiable information, so review its current data practices before installing it. Treat it as an alternative, not a guarantee of continuing compatibility: extensions that interact with Netflix’s player may need updates when the player changes.

Native subtitles, machine translation, and external files are not the same
- Two Netflix subtitle tracks: Both languages come from subtitle tracks Netflix offers for the title. Localization is not always literal, so the two lines may phrase dialogue differently.
- Machine-translated subtitle: An extension generates or overlays a translation that Netflix may not provide. It can help with comprehension, but wording may be awkward or wrong, especially with jokes, names, idioms, and context. Language Reactor’s guide warns that machine translations can contain errors. For serious listening practice, keep the original-language track in view and treat generated text as an aid.
- External subtitle file: A separate file can use different wording or timing from the Netflix video. Avoid mixing one with a Netflix track unless the tool provides a way to adjust synchronization.
A browser extension cannot conjure a second official Netflix subtitle track that is unavailable for the title. A translation feature may fill that gap, but it is a different, less dependable kind of subtitle.
Before installing an extension, check your devices and privacy
The dependable dual-subtitle method described here is Chrome playback on a desktop or laptop. Netflix’s apps on iPhone, iPad, Android, smart TVs, Roku, Apple TV, game consoles, and other streaming devices let you choose available audio and subtitle languages, but Netflix’s instructions do not describe third-party dual-subtitle overlays in those apps. Language Reactor’s Chrome Web Store listing specifies desktop and laptop support for its Netflix extension; a provider’s broader mobile site or other learning features do not establish support inside the Netflix mobile app.

If you want to view the result on a television, play Netflix in Chrome on your computer and connect it to the TV with HDMI, or try screen mirroring. This is a workaround, not officially supported dual-subtitle functionality, and an overlay may not survive every casting or mirroring setup.
Browser extensions can interact with the pages they support. Before installing, read the current permissions and privacy disclosures in the Chrome Web Store, especially if the tool handles subtitle text, offers translation, or saves vocabulary. Install from the official store listing, avoid extensions you cannot identify, and remove one you no longer use.

Make sure Netflix offers both languages
Subtitle availability varies by title, location, profile language preferences, device compatibility, and licensing. Downloads may show only the two most relevant audio or subtitle languages; a browser extension generally applies to browser playback, not offline viewing in the Netflix app. Netflix explains these limits in its language availability guidance.
- Start the title in Netflix and open Audio & Subtitles. Confirm that both languages appear in the subtitle list.
- If a language is missing, on the web go to Account → Profiles → choose a profile → Languages and update the relevant language preferences. Netflix’s profile language instructions cover this setting. Save changes, then reload the title.
- Try another title. Netflix has pages to browse titles by subtitle language and titles by audio language; these are discovery tools, not promises that any particular title has every language pair.
Some older devices may not support certain subtitle languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, and Vietnamese. If the language appears on one device but not another, device compatibility may be the reason. Changing regions is not a guaranteed fix: availability can depend on licensing, and a VPN does not create a subtitle track.
Troubleshoot a missing or broken second subtitle
- Verify both tracks in Netflix. If a language is absent from the native Audio & Subtitles menu, an extension using Netflix’s tracks cannot display it as an official subtitle.
- Reload the Netflix page after changing subtitle or profile language settings.
- Check the extension is enabled and up to date. Confirm it is the intended extension and that its requested site permissions are enabled. Language Reactor’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking whether domain blockers prevent it from loading.
- Temporarily disable conflicting extensions, such as ad blockers or privacy tools, then reload Netflix.
- Try another title and, if needed, test in a clean Chrome profile to identify a title-specific or extension conflict.
- If the lines are out of sync, reload the episode and prefer two native Netflix tracks. Avoid external files unless you can adjust timing.
- If it still fails, check the extension’s current help and update history, then try another tool. Netflix player changes can break third-party overlays until their developers update them.
If Netflix subtitle text is hard to read, its web settings include Account → Profiles → choose a profile → Subtitle appearance, where supported, for adjustments such as font, size, shadow, and background. See Netflix’s subtitle appearance instructions. Extension overlay styling may be separate and may not change Netflix’s native subtitle appearance.

Which extension should you choose?

For a documentary, keeping the original dialogue and a language you understand visible can help distinguish a translation from the speaker’s phrasing. If you need accurate wording for a specific line, remember that even official subtitle tracks may be localized rather than word-for-word, and machine-generated translations need verification.
