Install the official Netflix app from the App Store, sign in, and choose a title. Netflix’s current iPad app requires iPadOS 18 or later. Older iPads may still be able to redownload an earlier app version if Netflix was previously downloaded with the same Apple account; Safari is another option on iPads running iPadOS 14 or later.
What you need to watch Netflix on an iPad
- An iPad that can run a compatible Netflix app version or supported browser.
- An internet connection for streaming. Cellular streaming may use substantial data, so check your iPad settings and carrier plan.
- A Netflix account and active plan.
- Access to the App Store and the Apple ID authentication method needed to install an app.
Netflix is a subscription service available on supported internet-connected devices. You do not need a separate iPad subscription: use your existing Netflix account in the app or supported browser. See Netflix’s service and device overview and its supported-device information.
How to install Netflix on an iPad
- Open the App Store on the iPad and tap Search.
- Search for Netflix and select the official app published by Netflix, Inc. The App Store listing identifies the app and its current compatibility requirement.
- Tap Get or the cloud-download icon. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple ID password if asked.
- Open Netflix from the Home Screen, enter your Netflix email address and password, then choose a profile.
- Browse the Home screen or tap Search, select a movie or show, and tap Play. Tap the screen during playback to show controls for pausing, seeking, audio, and subtitles.
How to create a Netflix account on an iPad
New subscribers need to sign up in a mobile browser; sign-up is not supported inside the Netflix iPad app. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad signup instructions direct new users to the web.
- Open Safari or another mobile browser and visit netflix.com/signup.
- Choose a plan, enter an email address, create a password, and add a payment method.
- After signup, install Netflix from the App Store and sign in with the account you just created.
Can an older iPad run Netflix?
The latest Netflix app and current App Store listing require iPadOS 18 or later. Check your version at Settings → General → About → Version. Netflix says a device on iPadOS 12–17 may be able to redownload a compatible older version if the app was previously downloaded using that Apple account. If Netflix was never downloaded to that account, first-time installation may not be available on the older iPad. - iPadOS 18 or later: Install or update the app normally through the App Store.
- iPadOS 12–17, Netflix previously downloaded: Look for the cloud-download icon in the App Store under the Apple account that obtained it. App availability is not guaranteed.
- iPadOS 12–17, never downloaded: Try Safari if the iPad meets the browser requirements, or watch on another supported device.
- Cannot run iPadOS 12: Do not count on current Netflix app access or offline downloads; use a newer iPad or another supported device.
If Netflix does not appear in the App Store, the iPad’s OS is one possible cause. Also check that you are using the Apple account that previously downloaded Netflix, and consider whether App Store region or device restrictions affect what you see. Netflix account region and Apple App Store region are separate; changing store regions is not a guaranteed or risk-free fix. Do not download unofficial app files.
How to download Netflix shows and movies for offline viewing
Downloads are made in the Netflix app, not through Safari. Netflix supports downloads on iPads running iPadOS 12 or later; its guidance requires iPadOS 16 or later for downloads on an ad-supported plan. A title must have a download option, and the iPad must have enough free storage.

- Open Netflix and find a movie or episode with a Download icon.
- Tap the icon beside the movie or episode. For some series, Netflix also offers a season-download control.
- When you are offline, open the Downloads area in the app and choose the saved title.
Netflix recommends downloading over Wi‑Fi. Not every title is downloadable: licensing, regional rights, popularity, cost, or other content-owner restrictions can affect availability. Downloads can also be subject to expiration or viewing limits; check the notice shown in the app rather than assuming a title will remain available indefinitely. Set up automatic downloads
Downloads for You can automatically save recommended content when the iPad is connected to Wi‑Fi. Netflix says it requires the latest app version and available storage, and is not available on ad-supported plans.

- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
- Turn Downloads for You on or off, and use the plus or minus controls to adjust storage allocation.

Can you watch Netflix in Safari?
Yes. Netflix says iPads running iPadOS 14 or later can watch in HD through Safari. Open Safari, visit netflix.com, sign in, choose a profile, select a title, and tap Play. Safari is a useful fallback when the app cannot be installed, but it does not provide the app’s full feature set; in particular, offline downloads are an app feature.

Can you watch Netflix on a TV from an iPad?
Netflix does not support AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad. Do not rely on screen mirroring as the way to send Netflix from an iPad to a TV. Netflix confirms this in its casting and mirroring guidance.
- Open Netflix directly on a smart TV, Apple TV, game console, or supported streaming player.
- Use a compatible wired iPad-to-TV adapter or connection kit. Compatibility depends on the iPad port, adapter, display, and video-output support.

What picture and audio quality can an iPad provide?
Netflix’s iPad guidance lists Full HD, up to 1080p, on iPad (5th generation and later) and iPad mini 2 and later. It lists HDR support for iPad Pro 10.5-inch and later. Actual playback depends on the plan, title, connection, device, and settings; an iPad’s screen resolution, HDR capability, and Netflix plan resolution ceiling are different constraints. Premium plan support for 4K does not mean an iPad streams Netflix in 4K.
Netflix lists spatial audio on compatible iPad and iPhone models with AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, with iPadOS 14.6 or later and a Premium plan. This is optional; ordinary listening does not require those accessories. Netflix says spatial audio applies to streamed content, while downloads use stereo audio. Its iPhone and iPad feature guidance also notes that Picture in Picture is available only on certain models and ad-free plans, not universally.
Netflix is not working on my iPad
The app says the device is not compatible
- Check the iPadOS version at Settings → General → About → Version.
- Install any iPadOS update offered for the device.
- If it is on iPadOS 12–17, try the App Store cloud-download option only if Netflix was previously downloaded using that Apple account.
- If the app cannot be installed, try Safari where supported or switch to another Netflix-compatible device.
Playback fails or keeps buffering
- Confirm the iPad is online by trying another website or app.
- Force-close Netflix and reopen it.
- Update Netflix in the App Store, then update iPadOS if an update is available.
- Restart the iPad and try again.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in. If that does not help, delete and reinstall the app.
- Try Netflix in Safari as a diagnostic fallback, and check whether Netflix or your internet service is experiencing an outage.
There is no download button
The title may not be licensed for download in your location, or your iPad, operating system, app version, plan, or available storage may not meet the applicable requirements. Check the title’s availability, free storage, and Netflix’s download availability explanation and download troubleshooting steps.
