Short answer: You can install MX Player in the United States to play personal video files, but its online OTT streaming service is officially available only in India. Installing the media-player app does not unlock MX Player’s shows or originals. MX Player’s terms also prohibit using a VPN or similar technology to hide your location.
MX Player in the USA: the app and the streaming service are different
“MX Player” can refer to two different things:

MX Player’s support page on OTT availability gives the clearest answer: online streaming is currently limited to users in India. The US Google Play listing is for the media-player app. Store availability and streaming rights are separate, so finding the app does not mean you can watch its OTT shows.
Install MX Player in the USA for personal videos
If your goal is to play a video file you already have lawful access to, use the official app listing rather than an APK mirror:
- Open Google Play on your Android phone or tablet and search for MX Player, or use the official MX Player download page.
- Check the listing and publisher before installing. The US Google Play listing identifies the developer as Amazon Mobile LLC.
- Open the app and choose a video stored on your device. Grant only the access needed to find and play your media.
- If the video has subtitles or multiple audio tracks, select them in the playback controls. If playback fails, try another available decoder setting and update the app through the official store.
The US listing describes a player app with ads and in-app purchases. Those features do not add access to the India-only OTT catalog. Avoid modified apps and unofficial download sites: sideloading may install software, but it does not grant content rights or guarantee safe, supported playback.

Can you watch MX Originals and Indian shows in the US?
Not through an officially supported US MX Player OTT service, according to the service’s current support information. The availability of a particular MX title on another platform is a separate question: streaming rights vary by country and can change, so check the title itself on legitimate US streaming services, broadcaster pages or the rights holder’s site.
Do not assume that every MX Original is included with US Prime Video. Amazon’s announcement about combining Amazon MX Player with Prime Video describes an India-focused service, not a US catalog guarantee.

Does a VPN officially solve the problem?
No. MX Player’s terms of use say users may not use technology that conceals or falsifies their actual location, explicitly including a VPN. A VPN may also be detected or blocked, and it cannot change licensing rights or guarantee that an app, account, payment method or playback session will work. The reliable option is to use programming licensed for your location rather than treating a VPN as an official access method.

Update: August 16, 2026. Older instructions may describe MX Player as a standalone service or suggest that access abroad is straightforward. The current picture is different: MX Player’s terms refer to the transfer of its digital application and website to Amazon entities, and Amazon announced on July 16, 2026 that Amazon MX Player had integrated into Prime Video in India. That announcement does not establish that the same catalog is available to US Prime Video customers. Check the Amazon announcement and current MX Player information for changes.

Fire TV, smart TVs and browsers
A device’s ability to run a media app is not the same as having access to a streaming catalog. Amazon says Fire TV app availability varies by region. There is no verified basis here to promise a supported US MX Player OTT app for Fire TV or other smart TVs. Sideloading an APK may put software on a device, but it does not provide regional licensing, account support or dependable playback. Check the exact app listing for your device and region before buying hardware or attempting installation.
The same distinction applies in a browser: being able to reach a website does not establish that its video service is offered in the US. Use MX Player’s official site and support pages for current availability rather than assuming a web player bypasses regional limits.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Troubleshooting: app, playback or region error
- You installed the app but cannot find shows: You likely have the local media player, not access to the OTT catalog. The US app listing is not a catalog entitlement.
- You see a region or content-unavailable message: The OTT service may not be supported where you are, or that title may not be licensed in your territory.
- You are using a VPN, proxy or location-masking tool: Turn it off and retry. MX Player’s terms prohibit hiding your actual location, and the service may detect such tools.
- The app is missing from your device’s store: App availability can depend on device and store region. Check the official MX Player download page or your device maker’s store; do not assume an APK will provide OTT access.
- A personal video will not play or subtitles look wrong: Update the app from its official store, try another decoder option, and check subtitle and audio-track settings. Reinstall only from an official source if needed.
- You are looking for one particular program: Search the exact title on licensed US services. Do not infer its availability from the MX Player app or from the India-focused Prime Video integration.

If you want to watch a specific film or series, search for that title directly on legitimate US streaming services and the distributor’s official pages; rights can differ from title to title. Prime Video is worth checking for a particular program, but do not subscribe on the assumption that the India MX Player catalog has moved to the US. If you only want to play your own video files, the official MX Player app may still do that job in the US.
