You can watch a movie on an iPhone through a streaming app, rent or buy it digitally, download it for offline viewing, or play a personal video file. Use the movie service’s official app for subscription titles; for travel, download the movie in that app and test it before you leave. To watch on a TV, try AirPlay or a compatible HDMI connection.
Find out where the movie is available
A movie may be included with a subscription, offered for a separate rental or purchase, available free with ads, or already in your personal collection. Search the title in the services you use or in the Apple TV app, then check the listing before you press play: a title shown there may require another provider’s subscription or a separate payment. Apple describes its TV app as a place to discover Apple Originals, rentals, purchases, and content from participating services, not as a pass to every provider’s catalog (Apple TV app; Apple TV on the App Store).
- Subscription streaming: The film is included with a service and an eligible account. Availability can change as licensing changes.
- Rental: You pay for temporary access, subject to the provider’s playback window and other terms.
- Digital purchase: The title is added to a service-linked library. A purchase is generally tied to that account and platform; it is not necessarily an unrestricted video file.
- Free, ad-supported viewing: Some legal services offer movies at no charge with advertising. Check the provider’s app and the title’s availability in your country.
- Personal video: You can play a file you have the right to use if the iPhone or a media-player app supports its format.
Catalogs, payment options, app features, and available audio or picture formats vary by country, title, device, and provider. A listing may not offer the same HD, 4K, HDR, subtitle, or audio options on every iPhone. Physical DVDs and Blu-rays do not play directly on an iPhone; they require a separate computer and a lawful, compatible workflow to make a usable file.
Stream a movie in a service’s iPhone app
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or make sure cellular data is enabled for the app if you intend to stream over a mobile network.
- Install the provider’s official app from the App Store and sign in or create an account.
- Search for the movie, open its listing, and check whether it is included, rented, or offered for purchase.
- Tap Play, Watch, or the equivalent button. During playback, tap the picture to reveal controls such as pause, scrubbing, subtitles, and audio selection.
The Apple TV app can help find titles, but content from another provider may open or play in that provider’s app. Labels and integrations depend on the service, country, and iOS release. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad app, for example, supports movie search, playback, subtitles, alternate audio, and downloads on supported devices (Netflix Help Center).

Download a movie to watch offline
Offline downloads are usually managed inside the service that offers the film. They normally do not appear as ordinary MP4 files in the iPhone’s Files app, and download eligibility can depend on the title, account plan, country, app, and iOS version.
- While online, open the service’s app and find a movie marked as downloadable.
- Tap its Download control and, for large files, use Wi-Fi unless you deliberately allow downloads over cellular data.
- Wait until the download is complete, then find it in the app’s Downloads or offline section.
- Before a flight or other time without connectivity, switch off Wi-Fi and cellular data briefly and test playback in the app.
Check available space at Settings > General > iPhone Storage before downloading several films. A download may expire, require the account to be verified again, or become unavailable if you sign out, change plans, delete the app, or lose the relevant license. Netflix supports downloads on supported iPhones and iPads; its help page says downloads with an ad-supported experience require iOS or iPadOS 16 or later (Netflix download and device requirements). Apple TV app content can also be downloaded when supported (Apple TV on the App Store).
Apple says compatible devices can permanently download purchased Apple media, but notes that a purchased title may occasionally stop being available for redownload if distribution rights change. If continued access matters, download a purchase while it is available (Apple Support: download Apple media purchases).

Apple TV app
- Open the Apple TV app and search for the movie.
- Choose the displayed rental or purchase option, if offered, and authenticate the payment.
- Tap Play to stream, or download from the library if the title and device support it.
Apple says rented films can be streamed or downloaded on iPhone and other supported devices (Apple Support: rent movies from the Apple TV app). A rental is temporary access, not ownership. Rental rules can vary by provider and market; Apple user-guide language has historically described 30 days to start watching and 48 hours to finish after playback begins. Check the terms shown at checkout for the actual rental.
YouTube Movies & TV
YouTube rentals and purchases can be watched on supported smartphones and tablets through the YouTube app. To find purchased titles, open the profile menu and go to Your movies & TV. YouTube notes that purchasing directly in its iOS app is not available in every location, so a purchase may need to be made on another device before watching on the iPhone (YouTube Help: buy or rent movies and TV shows).

Neither store is guaranteed to carry every title or offer the lowest price. Compare the movie’s availability and terms where you live, and distinguish a one-time rental or purchase from a subscription listing.
Play a movie file already on your iPhone
For a compatible video, open the Files app, locate the file, and tap it. If the built-in player cannot open it, use the share or open-in control to try a compatible media-player app. If the file is in iCloud Drive or another cloud service, make sure it is downloaded to the phone before relying on it offline.
Not every video file will play in the native player. Issues can stem from an MKV container, an unsupported codec or subtitle format, multiple audio tracks, a very high bitrate, a damaged or incomplete copy, or digital rights management (DRM). DRM-protected content is not equivalent to an ordinary personal video file, and a player cannot remove the provider’s restrictions.
Transfer or stream personal videos with VLC
VLC for iOS is a useful option for personal, non-DRM files that the built-in player does not handle. VideoLAN lists support for formats including MKV, multiple audio tracks, and subtitle tracks. VLC can also receive files by Wi-Fi sharing, cloud services, Finder or iTunes file sharing, and network protocols (VLC for iOS; VLC on the App Store).
Transfer over Wi-Fi
- Install and open VLC, then select its Network tab and enable Sharing via Wi-Fi.
- Keep VLC open on the iPhone. On a computer on the same Wi-Fi network, open the IP address displayed in VLC’s browser.
- Drag the movie file into the browser’s upload area and wait for it to appear in VLC before playing it.
VideoLAN warns that VLC must remain open for the Wi-Fi sharing page to work. Its documentation also says the VLC downloader does not support downloading from popular video-playback sites such as YouTube or Vimeo (VLC iOS media synchronization).

Transfer from a Mac or Windows PC
On macOS Catalina or later, use Finder’s iPhone file-sharing controls to copy the movie into VLC’s app storage. On older macOS versions or Windows with iTunes, use iTunes File Sharing. The exact controls can differ by operating-system version; VideoLAN documents both workflows (VLC file synchronization guide).
Use cloud storage or a network drive
VLC supports cloud services including Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, and iCloud Drive, as well as network-storage protocols such as SMB, NFS, FTP, and SFTP (VLC media synchronization; VLC for iOS features). Streaming a cloud or network file is convenient but requires a reliable connection. For travel, download the file locally and confirm it plays; merely seeing a file in a cloud app does not mean it is stored on the iPhone. A home network share may not be reachable away from home, and VPNs, firewalls, a sleeping computer, or a changed network address can interrupt access.

AirPlay
- Connect the iPhone and Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled television to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start the movie and tap the AirPlay control in the player.
- Select the receiver. If playback does not transfer, try the provider’s own casting control or the TV’s native app.
AirPlay can send video to Apple TV 4K, AirPlay-enabled smart TVs, and other compatible receivers (Apple AirPlay). It is not Bluetooth: Bluetooth headphones or speakers can carry audio, not the video picture. Some services restrict external playback because of content rights, and wireless quality depends on the network and receiver.
Connect with HDMI
For a Lightning iPhone, Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter sends video and audio to an HDMI display at up to 1080p HD (Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter). For a USB-C iPhone, use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter. Apple says compatible HDMI 2.0 accessories can support up to 4K at 60 Hz, depending on the full connection and content (Apple Support: connect an iPhone with USB-C to an HDMI display).
With either setup, select the TV’s correct HDMI input and connect power if the adapter supports pass-through charging. Use an appropriate, compatible adapter and cable. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee 4K output, and a service may block external video even if the iPhone interface appears on the TV.

Choose audio, subtitles, and accessibility settings
Tap the screen during playback to look for the app’s subtitle, caption, and alternate-audio controls. Some titles have no alternate track or subtitles in a particular language; check the listing or playback menu rather than assuming they are included. Subtitle appearance may be controlled in the app or in iPhone accessibility settings.
Headphones, AirPods, or a Bluetooth speaker can make dialogue easier to hear. Features such as spatial audio, Dolby Vision, HDR, or Dolby Atmos depend on the title, subscription tier, iPhone model, app, headphones, and any external display. Netflix, for example, documents spatial-audio availability with compatible iPhone or iPad models and supported AirPods, subject to plan requirements (Netflix Help Center).
Manage data, storage, and battery
- Prefer Wi-Fi for streaming and large downloads. If you must use cellular data, check the service app’s data settings and your mobile plan.
- Download before travel and lower playback quality in the service app if data use or storage is a concern.
- Check free space before saving several movies; video can take substantial storage.
- Keep the iPhone plugged in for a long film or a large download. Low Power Mode can affect background activity.
- Avoid relying on streaming where cellular coverage is unstable. Use headphones at a comfortable volume and follow safe-listening practices.
Troubleshoot playback problems
The movie does not appear in search
- Search by alternate title or release year, and check the major services you already use.
- Confirm whether the result is available in your country and whether it requires a rental, purchase, or another provider’s app.
- Check the listing’s audio, subtitle, and picture options; “available” does not guarantee every format on every device.
The movie will not download
Check that the title is downloadable, the account plan permits downloads, the iPhone has enough free space, and the device meets the app’s requirements. Confirm you are signed in and connected to Wi-Fi, update the app if needed, and consider whether a regional restriction applies.
A download will not play offline
Reconnect briefly and open the service app to verify the account or download license. Make sure the download is complete, not queued, and that you are signed into the account that saved it. If the copy appears damaged, delete and download it again while online.

A personal file will not open
Confirm the copy finished transferring and that the file extension matches its actual format. Try VLC, another copy of the file, or conversion on a computer if the codec is unsupported. If the file is DRM-protected, it must be opened through the authorized service rather than treated as a regular video.
AirPlay has sound but no picture
Check that the receiver is compatible and both devices use the same network. Try the AirPlay control inside the video player rather than screen mirroring, then restart playback and the receiver. If the provider restricts external video, use its TV app or another permitted playback method.
HDMI shows the iPhone interface but the movie is black
Content protection or an app restriction may be responsible. Check the TV input, cable, adapter, and power connection, then test a permitted local file or another title to narrow down the cause. If only protected streaming video fails, use the provider’s TV app or an allowed AirPlay option; an adapter cannot override DRM.
