Yes—you can watch movies on an iPad without Wi-Fi or internet, but you must download them or transfer the video files before you go offline. Streaming apps do not play a title just because it appears in your library: it must be fully downloaded, and some rentals or app downloads have expiry and account-verification rules.
Use the service’s iPad app for subscription or store titles, or copy a legally obtained, DRM-free video file to the iPad for a local player. Then test playback in Airplane Mode before you leave.
Choose the right offline method

| A movie has no Download button | Check title, plan, region, device and app eligibility. Not every movie is available offline. |
“No Wi-Fi” is not always the same as “no internet”: an iPad with cellular service may still use mobile data. For a flight, remote trip or genuine no-connection test, Airplane Mode is the useful check.
Before you leave
- Connect to reliable internet, preferably Wi-Fi, and sign in to the app or account you plan to use.
- Check free space at Settings → General → iPad Storage. Video sizes vary with resolution, encoding, audio and service settings, so there is no dependable one-size-fits-all estimate.
- Download the movie and wait until the app shows that it is complete. If storage is tight, choose a lower download quality where the app offers that option and remove watched downloads.
- Open the app’s Downloads or downloaded-library area and start the movie once while still online.
- Turn on Airplane Mode and try playback, seeking, subtitles and any alternate audio you need. Lock and unlock the iPad and check that the film resumes.
Some services may need an account or license check, and rentals can expire. If the app shows a warning, reconnect and resolve it before departure rather than assuming the title will work later.

Netflix
While online, open the Netflix app, sign in, choose a movie and tap Download if the button is offered. When it finishes, open Downloads in the app to watch offline. Netflix also offers Downloads for You on supported iPhone and iPad setups, but check that the particular movie you want is actually downloaded.
Not every title is downloadable, and availability can depend on the title, account, country, device and current app support. Netflix’s current support page says its iPhone/iPad app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later; check Netflix’s device and download requirements if an older iPad cannot install or update the app. A downloaded Netflix title remains managed inside Netflix—it is not a regular MP4 you can move to Files or another player.
Disney+
In the Disney+ app, open a supported movie and tap Download below the Play button. Wait for completion, then use the app’s Downloads area for offline viewing. Disney+ provides download-quality choices; a lower setting can help conserve iPad storage. Download eligibility and plan rules vary by title and market, so check the app and the service’s download guidance for your country.

Prime Video and other subscription apps
For Prime Video or another service, use its official iPad app, open the title page and look for the app’s download control. Once downloaded, play it from that app’s Downloads area. The available titles, plan requirements, quality settings and expiry rules differ by service and region; do not assume that a title included in a catalog can be saved for offline viewing. Apple’s offline-viewing overview lists Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV among services with iPhone or iPad offline options, but each provider’s current help page is authoritative for its own rules.
Apple TV: purchased movies, subscriptions and rentals
Movies purchased through Apple
Open the Apple TV app, tap Library, open the purchased movie and tap the download button. Later, return to the Library or downloaded titles to play it. Apple says purchased digital media can be downloaded to supported devices for offline access, though store availability and features vary by country or region. Apple describes purchased media as permanently downloadable, but that should not be read as a guarantee that every title will always remain available for future redownload in every region. Download before the trip rather than relying on being able to retrieve it later.

Apple TV subscription and channel titles
In the Apple TV app, find the eligible title and tap Download. Find completed downloads under Library → Downloaded. Channel and subscription titles are not the same as purchased movies: download availability, device limits and expiry can differ. Apple says most Apple TV Channels downloads may remain available for up to 30 days, while some expire sooner; check the title’s notice and Apple’s download guidance.

Rentals
A rental is not equivalent to a purchase. It may have a deadline to begin watching and a shorter period to finish after playback starts. Check the rental’s displayed expiry information, and download it to the iPad you will take with you. Do not wait until the trip to discover that the rental is on another device or has expired.
YouTube movie purchases and rentals
Open the YouTube app while online and sign in to the account used for the purchase or rental. Open the movie and use its download control if offered; later, find it in the app’s Library or Downloads area. YouTube says supported purchased movies and TV shows can be downloaded for offline viewing in its app. Its rules differ for purchases and rentals, and availability depends on device, account and region. YouTube also notes that a rental downloaded on another device may need to be removed there before it can be downloaded to the device you want to use. See YouTube’s official help page.

This applies to eligible purchased or rented titles, not every video on YouTube. YouTube Premium downloads, user-uploaded videos and movie-store purchases are distinct features. Use the official app controls; downloaded protected titles are not ordinary files to export into another player.

A local-player app is useful for home movies, public-domain films and other videos you legally own or are permitted to download. The file must be DRM-free for a general-purpose player. A Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV or similar app download is protected and normally cannot be copied out as an MP4 or opened in VLC or Infuse.
Possible ways to put a personal file on the iPad include:

- AirDrop: Send a file from a nearby Mac or iPhone, then save or open it in Files or a compatible player.
- Cloud storage: In the cloud-storage app, download the file onto the iPad before disconnecting. A file that is cloud-only still needs internet.
- Computer transfer: Use Finder on a Mac or the current Apple device-management/file-sharing workflow on Windows, where supported by the app and setup.
- USB storage: Connect a compatible drive or adapter and copy the file locally, or play directly from the drive if the iPad, format and chosen app support it. The drive must remain connected for direct playback.
Then open the file in Files or import it into a player. Infuse supports a range of formats and local, network and cloud workflows, but its listing explicitly excludes DRM-protected iTunes Store movies and shows. VLC for Mobile is another option for compatible local files. Check the current app instructions for its import method and formats.
Copying a file is different from streaming it from a Mac, NAS, Plex server, network share or cloud account. If the video remains on another device or online service, the iPad may still need a network to reach it. For reliable offline playback, place the file in local iPad storage or the player’s local library and test it disconnected.
If the movie will not play offline
- No Download button: The title may not permit downloads, your plan may not include them, or the app, device or region may not qualify. Make sure you are using the native app rather than a browser and check the service’s current rules.
- Download is still in progress: Reconnect and let it finish. A title listed in a library is not necessarily stored on the iPad.
- Title expired or disappeared: Rentals and subscription downloads can have time limits or licensing restrictions. Reconnect to check the title and download it again if it remains available.
- App asks you to sign in or verify: Reconnect, confirm the right account and profile, and open the download before leaving. Some services require periodic verification.
- Not enough space: Review Settings → General → iPad Storage, delete unneeded downloads and select a lower quality where available. Leave room for iPadOS and other apps.
- File will not open: Confirm it is a supported format and not DRM-protected. Try a compatible player or convert only a file you are legally entitled to convert, using a legitimate method that does not bypass copy protection.
A local network, AirPlay or screen mirroring is not a dependable substitute for storing the film on the iPad: it can require a network, another active device or a working source connection.

Reliable travel setup
For the simplest setup, download the movie in its official service app or copy a DRM-free file into local storage, then test it in Airplane Mode. Bring headphones and a charger, and remove large completed downloads after the trip if you need the space. Avoid unauthorized download sites, DRM-removal tools and screen-recording protected streams; use official downloads or files you are entitled to play.
App names, iPadOS requirements, catalogs and download rules change. The service links above provide the current details for their own products; availability can also vary by country, plan and title.
