You can watch Indian movies in many countries, but there is no single overseas service with every Hindi and regional-language film. Streaming rights, prices, subtitles and even the available version vary by country—and a subscription bought in India may not work abroad.
The most reliable approach is to search for the specific film in the country where you will watch it, compare subscription and one-off options, then confirm the details on the provider’s own page before paying. The same method works for Indian documentaries as well as feature films.
Find a specific movie in your country first
- Open JustWatch and select the country where you are physically watching. Its country-specific guide lists legal subscription, ad-supported, rental and purchase offers; see how JustWatch works.
- Search the exact title. If it does not appear, try the original-language spelling, an English transliteration, an alternate title, or the film’s year. Searching the director or lead actor can also help identify a differently titled listing.
- Compare the offer type: included with a subscription, free with ads, rental, purchase, or access through an add-on channel. A title appearing on a service does not necessarily mean it is included in the basic subscription.
- Open the provider’s own listing and check that it is the right film and version. Confirm local price, language, subtitles, audio, resolution, rental window and any separate channel charge before you pay.
A listing on JustWatch is a useful lead, not a permanent guarantee. Rights can change and listings can lag behind removals. The Indian JustWatch catalog, for example, is not evidence that a film is available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or another market.
Which legal services should you check?

There is no reliable worldwide ranking of “the best” service. The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting lists services operating in the Indian OTT ecosystem, including Netflix, Prime Video, SonyLIV, Sun NXT and ZEE5, but that does not establish that each one is offered in every other country. Choose by language and viewing habit
Start with the film or language you actually watch, not a platform’s global reputation. Specialist catalogs can be more useful for a particular regional cinema, while mainstream services may be more convenient for widely marketed releases and originals.
- Hindi films and Bollywood: Check Netflix, Prime Video, ZEE5 Global, YouTube Movies and local rental stores. For classics, also search verified distributor channels and physical media.
- Tamil: Compare local listings for Sun NXT, aha Tamil, ZEE5, Netflix and Prime Video. Which one has a particular title depends on your country and the film’s rights.
- Telugu: Check aha, ZEE5, Netflix and Prime Video in your market, and compare rental offers for individual films.
- Malayalam: Investigate ManoramaMAX where available, alongside ZEE5, Netflix, Prime Video and local South Asian offerings.
- Bengali: Check Hoichoi, ZEE5, Netflix and Prime Video, then verify any rental or purchase listing locally.
- Marathi, Punjabi, Kannada and other languages: Search the language-specific services available in your country—such as Planet Marathi or Chaupal where offered—as well as the larger platforms. Catalog depth and overseas availability are not uniform.
If you are looking specifically for Indian documentaries, apply the same country-and-title search rather than assuming they are grouped with mainstream film collections. Also check film-festival programs, library platforms, university collections and official filmmaker or distributor channels. A documentary’s availability can be limited to a festival window or a particular territory.

Indian subscription or international subscription?
A streaming account has two separate questions: where it was purchased or registered, and where you are trying to watch. Providers license different rights by territory, so an Indian subscription is not a universal pass to the Indian catalog from overseas.
ZEE5 explicitly says that its subscription is country-specific and advises a viewer abroad to use the subscription for the country they are in. SonyLIV similarly limits access by geography and registration, and its terms prohibit VPNs, proxies and other means of concealing a user’s actual location. Read the relevant provider’s current rules before traveling or subscribing; do not assume that paying in India guarantees access abroad.

An international storefront may have a different catalog, plan structure, price and subtitle selection from the Indian service. Check the local storefront with the exact title in mind. A country-specific promotional price can change, and a plan’s advertised monthly equivalent may require annual billing.
Before you pay: check the version, subtitles and device
- Subtitles: Confirm that the specific listing includes the language you need, such as English. Subtitle availability can differ by title, market, version and device.
- Audio: Check whether you are getting the original-language track or a dub, and whether alternate audio is offered.
- Version and edits: Films may have different cuts or edits by market, distributor or rating requirements. If a particular version matters, verify the provider’s description.
- Quality: Do not assume an older or regional title is available in HD or 4K. Check the listing and device playback options.
- Price and access window: A rental is usually time-limited; the provider states when playback must start and how long it remains available. A purchase is digital access governed by the store’s terms, not the same as owning a physical disc.
- Device support: Confirm that the service has an official app for your TV, streaming device or operating system. A provider may support phones and web browsers but not every smart-TV model.
Watch on a TV, phone or computer
For the simplest setup, install the service’s official app from your device’s own app store, or use its official website in a supported browser. Sign in with the account for the correct country and start playback from the provider—not from a copied or unofficial streaming link.

For casting, put the phone and television or streaming device on the same Wi-Fi network. If the cast icon is missing, update the app, check that the network is not isolating guest devices, restart the app and device, and try the TV’s native app. Device compatibility varies by service. Avoid sideloading unknown APKs advertised as free-movie apps; they can expose you to malware and data theft as well as unauthorized streams.

If the movie is unavailable
- Search again with alternate details. Try original script or transliteration, alternate title, release year, director and lead actor.
- Check transaction stores. Search the local Apple TV Store, YouTube Movies, Prime Video Store and any local cable or television-provider video store. A title absent from subscription streaming may be available to rent or buy.
- Look for an authorized free release. Check official studio, distributor, production-company or rights-holder channels. A random full-length upload on YouTube is not proof of permission.
- Look beyond apps. Search local library catalogs, university collections, Indian film festivals, repertory cinemas and cultural organizations. Physical DVD or Blu-ray can also help with hard-to-find films, but check region coding, player compatibility, subtitles and the exact cut.
- Consider timing. A film may still be in theaters, may not yet have a digital release, or may have left a service when its license expired. Wait for an authorized release rather than trusting a page that cannot play the film.
A title page that opens but returns an unavailable message may be globally indexed while playback is restricted in your country, may require a separate rental or channel, or may be affected by expired rights. If you use a VPN, proxy, corporate network or privacy relay, it can also cause a location mismatch. Check the account’s country, current location and provider status before troubleshooting the app.

Travel and offline downloads
Do not assume a subscription or download works worldwide. Travel access depends on the service’s rules and the countries involved. Prime Video describes a specific portability rule for European Union residents traveling within the EU: they can access the same titles available in their country of residence. That is a defined regional rule, not evidence that an Indian catalog travels everywhere; see Prime Video’s travel guidance.
Where an official app offers downloads, only some titles may qualify, and the download may expire or have a viewing window. SonyLIV’s terms, for example, describe temporary downloads for certain content. Before departure, download in the official app, confirm the title is marked available offline, check its expiry, and open it once while you still have a connection. An offline copy is not permanent ownership or a guarantee of playback in every country.
Is a VPN a reliable way to watch?
No—not as a dependable or universally permitted solution. A VPN may be detected or cause playback, payment or account checks; some services expressly prohibit location-concealing tools. SonyLIV tells users not to access the service through VPNs or proxies and prohibits methods that conceal actual location. Rules and local law vary, so read the provider’s terms and use an officially available local service instead of relying on a VPN to reach another country’s catalog.

- One film: Compare rental prices before starting a new monthly subscription. Check Apple TV, YouTube Movies, Prime Video Store and local video stores.
- Occasional viewing: Search free-with-ads options in your country and verified official YouTube releases; use an existing subscription if it includes the film.
- Regular Indian-language viewing: Compare a local ZEE5 Global or regional-service plan with Netflix and Prime Video, but check the actual films and subtitle needs first.
- Mixed household: A general service may offer better overall value if people in the household also watch its broader catalog. Do not count a film as included until the provider confirms it.
- Classic-film collection: Check official digital releases and physical media. A disc can provide more stable access than streaming, though region compatibility and subtitle availability still matter.
Digital purchases are not the same as permanent ownership. Amazon’s terms warn that purchased content can become unavailable for licensing or other reasons. If long-term access matters, check the platform’s terms and consider legitimate physical media where available.
