Start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam if you want the main connected story. Then watch Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam Narrative, and Gundam Hathaway. Gundam is a franchise of separate timelines, however, so you can also begin with a self-contained series such as Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury.
Gundam is not one continuous story
Gundam is a franchise made up of several timelines. If you want the main connected story, begin with the original Mobile Suit Gundam and follow the core Universal Century (UC) sequence. If you would rather start with a shorter, self-contained series, choose an alternate-universe entry such as Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury.
The first Mobile Suit Gundam began in 1979, and its story takes place in Universal Century 0079. It introduced Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, the One Year War, and the political foundations that later UC productions build upon.

- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
- Mobile Suit Gundam
- Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
- Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
- Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
- Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
- Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative
- Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway
This is a narrative-first order rather than a strict in-universe chronology. It keeps the central Amuro–Char storyline intact and avoids interrupting it with side stories that are easier to appreciate after you understand the main conflict.
1. Mobile Suit Gundam
Start with the original 1979 television series if you want the fullest introduction to Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, the Earth Federation, Zeon, and the One Year War. It establishes concepts that later entries often assume you already understand, including Newtypes, the Federation–Zeon conflict, and the political role of mobile suits.
There are two sensible ways to begin:
- The original television series: the best choice for character development, supporting characters, and world-building detail.
- The compilation film trilogy: Mobile Suit Gundam I, Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow, and Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space. This is a shorter entry point that covers the central story in condensed form.
Do not watch both versions on your first pass unless you specifically want to compare them. Choose the television series or the three films, then continue to Zeta Gundam.
If streaming access is incomplete, physical Gundam media can be a practical fallback, particularly for the original series or its film trilogy. Editions and stock vary by country, so verify the exact release before buying.

Zeta Gundam is the major direct continuation of the original series. It introduces Kamille Bidan, the Titans, the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG), and a changed political landscape after the One Year War. Char also returns in a new role that becomes increasingly important to the UC storyline.
Watch the original television series for a first viewing. The later three-film version, A New Translation, condenses and revises the story. It can be useful as an alternate interpretation, but it is not an additional required step and is not the clearest replacement if your goal is to understand all of the continuity that follows.
3. Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Continue with Gundam ZZ, which follows the events of Zeta Gundam. Its early episodes are lighter and more comedic in tone than much of Zeta, a shift that can surprise new viewers. The series nevertheless remains an important part of the main UC route.
ZZ develops the political and character circumstances surrounding Neo Zeon and Mineva Lao Zabi. Those developments matter when you reach Char’s Counterattack, so skipping the series on a first complete UC run can leave important context missing.

Watch Char’s Counterattack after both Zeta Gundam and ZZ. This film is the major culmination of the Amuro–Char conflict and brings the political struggle between the Earth Federation and Zeon into a new phase.
Rank #2
- The latest internal frame design features a semi-monocoque structure, letting you experience the process of building a Mobile Suit
- The joint structure, returning to the original design, incorporates a new mechanism where the parts that look like joints bend properly by reinterpreting the movable axis
- The legs, inspired by the close combat MS Gundam that it's known for, use composite frame joints to create a human-like outline even when moved
- Details are intricately carved into parts not visible from the outside, such as joints and the backs of parts. Noticeable mounting holes have been removed, resulting in a seamless, integrated design
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
It is technically possible to follow the film’s broad plot without every preceding series, but its emotional and political stakes depend heavily on the relationships and events established in the earlier UC productions. It is not a good beginner entry point.
5. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Gundam Unicorn takes place later in the Universal Century and builds on the Federation–Zeon conflict, Newtype themes, and unresolved political questions from the earlier works. It is a substantial UC sequel, not a standalone alternate-universe series.
You may encounter it in either of these formats:
- The original seven-episode OVA: the initial release format.
- Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096: a television re-edit of substantially the same story.
Choose one format rather than watching both during a first pass. RE:0096 is not a separate sequel.

6. Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative
Watch Gundam Narrative after Unicorn. The film takes place one year after the Laplace Incident, the central conflict of Unicorn, and follows up on the larger UC questions raised there.
Because it assumes knowledge of Unicorn and its setting, Narrative is better treated as a sequel than as an introduction to Gundam.
7. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway
Gundam Hathaway comes after Char’s Counterattack and works best after Unicorn and Narrative if you are following the broader modern UC route. The film explores Hathaway’s continuing relationship to the ideals and legacy of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable.
The planned Hathaway film series is not a replacement for the earlier UC entries. The first film assumes familiarity with the preceding political landscape and with Hathaway’s personal history, especially his connection to Char’s Counterattack.
Should you watch Gundam in chronological order?
Usually, no—not for your first trip through the main UC story. Several side stories take place earlier in the timeline than Zeta Gundam, but watching every title in chronological order would repeatedly interrupt the principal narrative.
Release and narrative order is generally more coherent:
Rank #3
- Part of the HG Series
- Bandai's newest "High Grade (HG)" model kit faithfully reproduces the new Gundam's distinctive form
- Loaded with articulation in the torso, hips, and elsewhere for dynamic posability after assembly!
- [Includes]: Weapons (x1 set) Backpack (x1 set) Interchangeable head part Interchangeable hands (x1 set) Stickers Marking stickers
- Mobile Suit Gundam
- Zeta Gundam
- Gundam ZZ
- Char’s Counterattack
- Gundam Unicorn
- Gundam Narrative
- Gundam Hathaway
Chronological order becomes more useful after you have completed the core route and want to explore the UC setting in depth. It is not a requirement for understanding Gundam.
Universal Century side stories to watch later
These productions enrich the Universal Century but are not prerequisites for Zeta Gundam or the main Amuro–Char route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Title | Where it fits | Best time to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket | A compact One Year War side story | After the original Mobile Suit Gundam |
| Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team | Another One Year War story, focused on a ground unit | After the original series or film trilogy |
| Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory | Set between the original series and Zeta | After Zeta for a smoother first narrative, or before it for chronological viewing |
| Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin | A prequel and retelling focused heavily on Char, Sayla, and the origins of the One Year War | Usually after the original series |
| Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt | A UC-associated side story with a distinct tone and presentation | After you know the basic UC conflict |
| Mobile Suit Gundam F91 | A much later UC story | After the early Amuro–Char material |
| Victory Gundam | A later entry separated from the early UC storyline by substantial in-universe time | For a deeper UC completionist watch |
Important: The Origin does not have to come first simply because it is chronologically earlier. It deliberately recontextualizes material that the original series introduced, making it more rewarding after the 1979 series for many first-time viewers.
Standalone Gundam series for beginners
You do not need to watch the UC sequence before starting these alternate-universe productions. Each has its own setting, cast, history, and mobile-suit terminology.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Gundam 00 is set in its own future timeline, beginning in A.D. 2307. It is a strong choice if you want a modern political-war story without starting with 1970s animation.
Order: Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 1 → Season 2 → Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED
Gundam SEED is another self-contained continuity. Watch it before its direct follow-up, SEED Destiny, and then finish with Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
Order: Gundam SEED → Gundam SEED Destiny → Gundam SEED Freedom.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
Iron-Blooded Orphans follows Mikazuki Augus, Orga Itsuka, and Tekkadan amid a conflict between Mars and Earth. Its setting has its own history, including the earlier Calamity War, so no UC preparation is needed.
Rank #4
- Faithfully recreates the mobile suit’s distinctive form
- The head can be replaced to display either the closed or deployed state
- Articulated joints in the torso, hips, and other areas allow for dynamic action poses
- The backpack features flexible articulation, enabling expressive posing from various angles
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
Order: Season 1 → Season 2. The later Urdr-Hunt animated material is supplemental and should come after the main series.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
The Witch from Mercury is designed as an independent entry point. Its setting is A.S.122, and its story centers on Suletta Mercury, Miorine Rembran, the Asticassia School of Technology, and the corporations shaping their world.
Order: Prologue → Season 1 → Season 2. The Prologue is useful context and should be watched before the main series.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX
GQuuuuuuX is a newer Gundam production with its own distribution arrangement. The official site has described it as coming exclusively to Prime Video in more than 240 countries and regions. Treat that as a current release statement, not a permanent guarantee: launch timing, territory rules, and catalog access can change.

Crunchyroll has live title pages for several relevant entries, including the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam 00, and Gundam Narrative. A U.S. JustWatch listing checked in June 2026 also reported the original series through Crunchyroll and the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel.
That does not mean the entire franchise is available through one service. Check the specific title—not just “Gundam”—on your local streaming storefront. The official Gundam YouTube channel and official series pages may also offer selected episodes or titles, but those offers can be territory-limited and temporary.
If one entry in your chosen continuity is unavailable, consider a licensed Blu-ray or DVD rather than skipping a major sequel. Physical releases can also preserve access when a title rotates out of a streaming catalog, although availability and regional formats differ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Physical media: when it makes sense
Physical media is most useful for the original UC route because the story depends on watching entries in sequence. A Mobile Suit Gundam Blu-ray or Gundam movie trilogy Blu-ray can solve the first decision—television series versus compilation films—when neither version is reliably available to stream. Check the edition’s region coding, subtitle and audio options, and whether it contains the complete run rather than a partial release.

Gundam model kits after you choose a series
Gunpla is optional merchandise, not part of the viewing order. Once you have watched a series and chosen a favorite mobile suit, a Bandai Gunpla model kit can be a natural next step. Official product lines include kits connected to series such as The Witch from Mercury and SEED Freedom.
For a first build, look at the grade and scale before buying. An HG 1/144 kit is generally the simplest place to begin, while larger or more detailed grades can require more time and careful assembly. Select a kit because you like the mobile suit—not because it is supposedly required to understand Gundam.
Which Gundam order should you choose?
| If you want… | Start here | Then watch |
|---|---|---|
| The original connected saga | Mobile Suit Gundam | Zeta → ZZ → Char’s Counterattack → Unicorn → Narrative → Hathaway |
| A shorter classic introduction | The three Mobile Suit Gundam compilation films | Zeta Gundam, then the same UC route |
| A modern political-war story | Gundam 00 | Season 1 → Season 2 → A Wakening of the Trailblazer |
| A self-contained character drama | Iron-Blooded Orphans | Season 1 → Season 2 |
| A newer school-and-corporate setting | The Witch from Mercury Prologue | Season 1 → Season 2 |
| The SEED continuity | Gundam SEED | SEED Destiny → SEED Freedom |
The key is to finish one continuity before jumping between unrelated series. Once you know whether you prefer the classic UC political saga, the self-contained alternate universes, or the side stories, exploring the rest of Gundam becomes much less confusing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to watch the original Gundam before other Gundam series?
No. Gundam is divided into multiple timelines. The original series and its major sequels belong to the Universal Century, while shows such as Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, and The Witch from Mercury use independent settings.
What is the correct order for the main Gundam story?
For the main UC story, watch Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam Narrative, and Gundam Hathaway. You can use either the original TV series or the compilation-film trilogy for the first entry.
Should I watch the original Gundam series or the movies?
The original TV series contains more character and world-building detail. The three compilation films tell a shorter version of the same opening story and are a practical alternative for viewers who want a faster start.
Should I watch Gundam: The Origin first?
No. The Origin is a prequel and retelling that is usually more accessible after the original Mobile Suit Gundam, because it recontextualizes events and characters first introduced there.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Where can I stream all of Gundam?
No single service should be assumed to carry the entire franchise. Streaming rights vary by country and date, so check each title directly on your local storefront and consider licensed physical media for unavailable entries.
The Bottom Line
For the main Gundam story, watch Mobile Suit Gundam → Zeta Gundam → Gundam ZZ → Char’s Counterattack → Gundam Unicorn → Gundam Narrative → Gundam Hathaway. If that commitment feels too large, begin with Gundam 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, or The Witch from Mercury instead; they are independent timelines.
