The most complete setup was NBA League Pass for most out-of-market games, a live-TV streaming service carrying ABC, ESPN and TNT—and NBA TV when needed—for national broadcasts, plus the applicable regional sports network for a local team. League Pass did not remove local or national blackouts, and it did not provide live U.S. coverage of the playoffs and Finals.
The 2024 U.S. setup: three types of access
No streaming service alone delivered every NBA game live in the United States during the 2024 season. The closest complete setup was:

In practical terms, a league-wide fan needed League Pass plus a live-TV service. A fan whose favorite team was local might also need that team’s regional sports network. Exact channel availability, local affiliates and regional-sports coverage depended on the viewer’s ZIP code and the provider’s package.
What NBA League Pass covered—and what it did not
The practical starting point is NBA League Pass if you primarily follow teams outside your local broadcast territory. The service provided live out-of-market games, on-demand replays, condensed games and NBA TV content. It was the main way to fill in regular-season games that were not being shown nationally or by a local broadcaster. Out-of-market means that you are outside the local television territory for a team. It does not mean that you can watch every game simply because you bought the package. A viewer living in a team’s local market could subscribe to League Pass and still find that team’s live games unavailable.
The U.S. League Pass blackout rules
- Local team games: live games involving the NBA team or teams in your local market were blacked out.
- National games: games carried nationally by ABC, ESPN, TNT or another listed national outlet were also blacked out live on League Pass.
- Delayed availability: according to the NBA’s official blackout guidance, nationally televised games became available on demand at 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time the following day. Locally televised games became available three days after the live broadcast.
- Postseason: League Pass did not provide live U.S. access to certain marquee events, including the playoffs and Finals. Delayed replays were available under the applicable blackout rules.
These restrictions are rights rules, not a sign that your app or internet connection is malfunctioning. The NBA says the blackout footprint is based on your location. Use the League Pass ZIP-code checker before subscribing, and check again when traveling or watching from another address.
National NBA games in the 2024 season
The 2024–25 regular season began on October 22, 2024. The NBA’s official schedule release identified ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV as national broadcast outlets, while separately identifying League Pass games. That distinction is the key to choosing a streaming package.

If a game is nationally televised, League Pass does not turn it into a live out-of-market stream in the U.S. You need access to the network showing it, usually through a pay-TV provider or a live-TV streaming service.
Choosing a live-TV streaming service
Compare services by channels and ZIP code, not by brand reputation alone. For a service to complement League Pass, check four things before paying:
- Does the package carry ABC, ESPN and TNT?
- Does your address receive the appropriate local ABC affiliate?
- Is NBA TV included if you want games and programming carried there?
- Does the service carry your team’s regional sports network, if you live in that team’s market?
YouTube TV as a concrete 2024 example
YouTube TV was one practical category to investigate because its published NBA channel information listed ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV, and its lineup also presented NBA League Pass as an additional offering. That does not make it universally the cheapest or best choice: local-channel availability, regional sports coverage, package composition and pricing can vary by location and change over time. Check the lineup for your ZIP code and the specific plan rather than relying on a national advertisement.

Other live-TV candidates
Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, Sling TV and DIRECTV STREAM were also relevant services to compare in 2024. A 2024 streaming guide from WIRED treated these services as NBA options while noting that regional coverage varied by team, region and game. Their packages were not interchangeable, so verify the particular 2024 channel lineup, local affiliate and regional sports network before choosing one.

Do not choose a service solely because it advertises sports. A provider can be useful for ESPN but not TNT, or carry national networks without carrying the regional network that shows your local team.
Local-market games and regional sports networks
If you live in the broadcast territory of an NBA team, League Pass is usually not the solution for watching that team live. The local game may be exclusive to a regional sports network or another local broadcaster, while nationally selected games move to ABC, ESPN or TNT.

Before subscribing, identify the network that carries your team in your ZIP code and then find a TV provider that distributes it. Some providers carry a regional network only in certain markets or packages. Availability can also change during a season, so confirm it directly with the provider and the team’s current viewing information.
A local fan may therefore need:
- the regional sports network for ordinary local games;
- a live-TV service carrying ABC, ESPN and TNT for national games; and
- League Pass only if they also want live games from teams outside their local market.
The reverse is also true: an out-of-market fan may need no local RSN for the team they follow, but still needs a live-TV service whenever that team’s game is selected for national broadcast.
What package should you choose?

A pre-subscription checklist
- List the teams you watch. Mark which ones are local to your current address.
- Check the League Pass blackout tool. Enter your ZIP code and note which teams and types of games are restricted.
- Review the national schedule. Identify whether the games you care about are on ABC, ESPN, TNT or NBA TV.
- Test the live-TV service at your address. Confirm the local ABC affiliate, the relevant national networks and the selected plan tier.
- Check the regional network. If your favorite team is local, verify that the provider carries the team’s RSN in your ZIP code.
- Plan for the postseason separately. Check the broadcaster for each playoff and Finals game.
- Account for travel. Recheck the rules when your viewing location changes because blackouts are location-based.
Putting the games on a television
You can use the NBA App and the provider’s television app on a supported smart TV or streaming player. If you need hardware, a streaming device for NBA games can make those apps easier to use on a television, but it is only a way to run the apps. It does not supply a subscription, create access to a missing channel or remove an NBA blackout. Check app compatibility before buying equipment.

Do not apply the 2025–26 rights deal to 2024
In July 2024, the NBA announced a future media-rights arrangement involving Disney, NBCUniversal and Amazon Prime Video. The NBA’s announcement said those agreements were scheduled to begin with the 2025–26 season. They should not be used as the viewing instructions for the 2024–25 regular season. For this guide’s time frame, the relevant national outlets were ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV, alongside League Pass and local rights.
