To watch each season of American Horror Story in order, use premiere order: start with Murder House (2011), continue through the 12 released seasons, and finish with Delicate (2023). Watch Murder House and Coven before Apocalypse because that season is the major crossover.
Most seasons tell self-contained stories, so you can technically begin elsewhere. Premiere order is still the best default for a first-time viewer because the show rewards callbacks, recurring performers, and mythology that becomes most meaningful across its original release sequence.
Key takeaways
- The best first-time viewing order is premiere order: Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse, 1984, Double Feature, NYC, and Delicate.
- American Horror Story is an anthology, so most seasons have separate characters and storylines and can technically be watched independently.
- Murder House and Coven should come before Apocalypse, which is the main crossover season and reuses characters and mythology from both.
- Hulu’s official series page currently lists 12 released seasons and 132 episodes in the United States, while FX lists Season 13 as coming soon.
- American Horror Stories is a separate spin-off with a new story at the episode level; it does not belong between the numbered seasons of the main series.
What is the correct American Horror Story viewing order?
The correct default order is the original premiere order, beginning with Murder House in 2011 and ending with Delicate in 2023. Premiere order gives you the intended progression of themes, recurring performers, callbacks, and cross-season mythology, especially the connection between Murder House, Coven, and Apocalypse.
FX’s official American Horror Story installment page lists the released seasons in this numbered sequence. The years below refer to each season’s original release year, not necessarily the year when a particular streaming service added it.

| Order | Season | Release year | What it is about | Viewing note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Murder House | 2011 | The Harmon family moves into a Los Angeles house with a violent supernatural history. | Start here for the franchise’s original mythology and later connections. |
| 2 | Asylum | 2012 | Patients and staff face abuse, religion, aliens, and demonic horror in a Catholic-run Massachusetts institution during the 1960s. | Largely self-contained, but the intended second-season experience is premiere order. |
| 3 | Coven | 2013 | Descendants of Salem witches live and compete in modern-day New Orleans. | Watch before Apocalypse. |
| 4 | Freak Show | 2014 | A struggling traveling carnival in Jupiter, Florida, becomes the setting for murder and personal conflict. | Not required for understanding Apocalypse. |
| 5 | Hotel | 2015 | The Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles hides ghosts, vampires, and long-buried secrets. | A strong choice if you enjoy gothic, highly stylized horror. |
| 6 | Roanoke | 2016 | A documentary-like production and its dramatized reconstructions blur testimony, performance, and reality. | Its format is a major departure from earlier seasons. |
| 7 | Cult | 2017 | Political division, manipulation, and psychological terror unfold after the 2016 U.S. presidential election. | Its release-era political context is part of the viewing experience. |
| 8 | Apocalypse | 2018 | A nuclear catastrophe brings together characters and storylines from earlier seasons. | Watch Murder House and Coven first. |
| 9 | 1984 | 2019 | Counselors at Camp Redwood become trapped in an 1980s summer-camp slasher scenario. | Can be viewed independently, but belongs here in premiere order. |
| 10 | Double Feature | 2021 | “Red Tide” follows a family in Provincetown; “Death Valley” follows college students caught in an alien conspiracy. | One numbered season containing two distinct stories. |
| 11 | NYC | 2022 | Mysterious deaths and disappearances affect New York City’s LGBTQ+ community as a frightening virus emerges. | A more grounded investigative and historical-horror season. |
| 12 | Delicate | 2023 | An actress undergoing infertility treatment and IVF suspects sinister forces are interfering with her ability to conceive. | Based on Danielle Valentine’s book Delicate Condition. |
Does American Horror Story have to be watched in order?
No. American Horror Story does not have to be watched in order because each season generally introduces a new setting, cast of characters, and principal storyline. Hulu describes the series as an anthology, which makes it reasonable to begin with the premise that interests you most.
Premiere order remains the safest choice for a first viewing. Later seasons contain callbacks, recurring actors in new roles, and connections that are more satisfying when the earlier material has already been established. The exception is that viewers who want to jump around should still watch Murder House and Coven before Apocalypse.
Why should you watch Murder House and Coven before Apocalypse?
Apocalypse is the clearest crossover season in the main series: it combines characters and mythology from Murder House and Coven. Watching both earlier seasons first explains who those characters are, why their relationships matter, and why certain returns are significant. Hulu specifically recommends watching Murder House and Coven before Apocalypse in its American Horror Story season guide.

Where can you watch all 12 released seasons?
In the United States, Hulu is the clearest current streaming destination for the 12 released seasons. Hulu’s catalog currently reports 12 seasons and 132 episodes, a figure displayed on its official series page in 2026; you can watch American Horror Story on Hulu, subject to the service’s current plan, catalog, and regional terms.
FX also directs viewers to Hulu for the series. Streaming availability and subscription pricing can change, so the Hulu listing should be checked when you are ready to start. A U.S. availability check updated August 13, 2026, currently lists Hulu and Amazon Prime Video alongside digital purchase and DVD/Blu-ray purchase options; JustWatch’s current U.S. listing is useful for checking those options before watching.

| Digital purchase | Keeping access to purchased episodes or seasons | Store catalogs, prices, and included seasons vary by retailer and date. |
| DVD or Blu-ray | Physical ownership, collecting, or viewing without relying on a streaming catalog | U.S. listings currently include disc purchase options, but a specific complete-series set, seller, price, or stock status should not be assumed. |
If you prefer physical ownership, compare the exact release before buying American Horror Story DVD or Blu-ray. Product listings may cover an individual season rather than all released seasons, and Season 13 is not part of the 12-season released set described above.
Is American Horror Story Season 13 available?
No. As of August 14, 2026, Season 13 is not part of the released-season binge. FX’s official page labels the thirteenth installment “coming soon” and states: “PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 24 ON FX.” The same page directs viewers to Hulu, but episodes should not be described as currently available until a later catalog check confirms that they have premiered.

What is the difference between American Horror Story and American Horror Stories?
American Horror Story is the main anthology series in which the principal story changes from season to season. American Horror Stories is a separate spin-off in which the horror story changes from episode to episode, and Hulu lists it separately from the main 12-season series.
Do not insert American Horror Stories between American Horror Story seasons. Finish the main series in premiere order first, then treat the spin-off as a separate watchlist. Some viewers may enjoy using it as a companion series, but it is not Season 13 of the main show.
Which season should you start with if you do not want to begin at Season 1?
If you do not want to begin with Murder House, choose a season based on its premise, but avoid starting with Apocalypse. Hotel suits viewers seeking gothic supernatural horror, Roanoke suits viewers interested in an unusual documentary-style structure, and 1984 suits viewers who enjoy summer-camp slasher conventions.
