The game was played on January 8, 2024, and Michigan defeated Washington 34–13. At the time, the authorized full-game stream was provided through ESPN, usually with a cable, satellite, or live-TV streaming subscription that included ESPN.
If you are looking for the broadcast today, your realistic legal options are an authorized replay, official highlights, or archived recap coverage—not an unrestricted free live feed.
Which “2024” championship does this refer to?
The January 8, 2024 championship decided the 2023 FBS season. It was played at NRG Stadium in Houston, with Michigan beating Washington 34–13. The listed television start time was 7:30 p.m. Eastern, while kickoff took place at approximately 6:46 p.m. Central.
This distinction matters because the championship for the 2024 college football season was played in January 2025. Searches for “2024 championship” can otherwise lead to the wrong game.

Where the championship aired
| Option | What it provided | What you needed |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN television | The primary broadcast | A TV package carrying ESPN |
| ESPN.com | Authenticated live stream and alternate feeds | An affiliated provider account with ESPN access |
| ESPN app | The main game, alternate presentations, and other event feeds | A compatible device and verified provider subscription |
| Live-TV streaming services | ESPN through services such as Fubo, Sling TV, DIRECTV STREAM, or Hulu + Live TV | A package and location where ESPN was included |
Availability and channel lineups varied by location and could change. A service carrying ESPN in one market or package was not necessarily available to every subscriber.
How the ESPN stream worked
For viewers who had ESPN access through a participating provider, the process was:
- Open ESPN.com or the ESPN app.
- Find the championship listing or live-event page.
- Select Choose Provider if ESPN asks you to authenticate.
- Choose your cable, satellite, or live-TV streaming provider.
- Sign in using that provider’s account credentials.
- Start the event after ESPN confirms that the subscription includes the ESPN network.
ESPN’s live-stream access is tied to an affiliated video-provider subscription. If the account does not include ESPN, the site may offer clips or on-demand material but not the full live network broadcast.
Was there a free legal stream?
There was no verified, unrestricted official stream of the full championship that anyone could watch without an account or subscription. The legitimate possibilities were narrower:

- Existing subscription: If your household already paid for cable, satellite, or a live-TV streaming package with ESPN, watching online generally required no separate event purchase.
- Promotional trial: A live-TV service might have offered a trial to eligible new customers at the time. Trials had different lengths, restrictions, billing dates, and channel lineups; they were not permanent free access.
- Free official clips: ESPN and the College Football Playoff published highlights, recaps, and selected video clips that did not amount to a free full-game broadcast.
An antenna was not a dependable solution. Antennas receive local over-the-air stations, while the main championship broadcast was on ESPN. An antenna alone did not provide the ESPN telecast.
Why ESPN+ was not automatically enough
An ESPN+ subscription should not be treated as an automatic replacement for ESPN television access. ESPN distinguishes between ESPN+ on-demand programming and live content carried by the ESPN television network. Access depended on the specific subscription or on credentials from a qualifying television provider.
In practical terms, having ESPN+ did not by itself guarantee access to this championship’s main ESPN broadcast. The account had to include the necessary network access.

How to find legal coverage now
- Check the official College Football Playoff recap for the final score, game details, and official material.
- Search ESPN’s college football video section for published highlights and recap clips.
- Look through your existing television provider’s sports or college football library for an archived replay.
- Check the ESPN app or ESPN.com while signed in to see whether your current subscription offers replay access.
- Avoid pages promising a “free HD live stream” of the game without identifying a recognized broadcaster. Such pages are commonly unauthorized, deceptive, or loaded with aggressive redirects and malware.
Common claims that are misleading
“The 2024 title was the 2024 season championship.”
No. The January 2024 game crowned the champion of the 2023 season. The 2024-season championship was played the following January.
“ESPN.com streams the game free without a login.”
Not the full ESPN network feed. ESPN required authentication through an affiliated provider for live network programming.
“Every ESPN game is included with ESPN+.”
Not automatically. ESPN+ and ESPN television-network access are separate categories unless a qualifying plan or provider arrangement combines them.

“An indoor antenna gets the game for free.”
Not this broadcast. The championship aired on ESPN rather than as a standard over-the-air network telecast.
FAQ
Can I still watch the 2024 College Football Championship live?
No. Michigan–Washington was played on January 8, 2024. You can look for an authorized replay, official highlights, or recap coverage instead.
What channel showed the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship?
ESPN carried the main broadcast. ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, the ESPN app, and ESPN Radio offered alternate presentations or coverage.
Could I watch the full game for free legally?
There was no verified unrestricted free stream of the full game. Viewers could use an existing ESPN subscription, possibly use an eligible live-TV trial available at the time, or watch free official highlights.
Does ESPN+ include the championship automatically?
No. ESPN+ does not automatically provide every game broadcast on the ESPN television network. Access depended on the specific plan or authenticated provider subscription.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 championship is no longer a live event: Michigan defeated Washington 34–13 on January 8, 2024. ESPN was the authorized broadcaster, and its online stream required access through a participating TV or live-TV streaming provider. Today, use ESPN or College Football Playoff archives for official replays and highlights, and avoid unofficial “free stream” pages claiming to offer the full game.
