Quick answer: the cable-free ways to watch
For the 2024–25 event, these were the practical options:
- Max: Max subscribers could watch CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage through the CNN Max/live-news offering available at the time.
- Sling Blue: Sling’s Blue plan carried CNN, making it a cable-replacement option for viewers who wanted the live CNN channel.

Option 1: Watch through Max—valid for 2024–25, not a current recommendation
For the 2024–25 broadcast, Max was the most direct streaming option for subscribers who wanted CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage without a traditional cable package. CNN’s event announcement specifically identified Max as a streaming destination.
That option should be treated as historical. HBO Max’s official help information says the CNN Max live-news feed ended on November 17, 2025. Therefore, a current Max subscription should not be presented as a way to watch a future CNN New Year’s Eve special unless CNN and Max announce that arrangement again for that particular event.

Option 2: Use Sling Blue as a live-TV cable replacement
Sling Blue included CNN in its channel lineup, so it was a legitimate way to receive the live CNN channel without a cable subscription. This route was different from the Max arrangement: Sling Blue was a live-TV package, while Max was a streaming subscription that carried the CNN Max feed for the 2024–25 event.
Because channel lineups, prices, promotional terms, and regional availability can change, check Sling’s current lineup before signing up for a future event. The fact that Sling Blue carried CNN does not by itself prove that CNN officially promoted Sling as a destination for the 2024 broadcast.
Option 3: Watch through Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV was another cable-free route to CNN for the 2024–25 viewing period. It works as a live-channel replacement rather than as a standalone CNN app subscription.
Before relying on it for a future New Year’s Eve broadcast, verify three details on Hulu’s current service page: that CNN is still included in the plan available in your location, that your subscription includes live television rather than an on-demand-only Hulu tier, and that the service supports the device you plan to use.

Option 4: Use CNN.com or the CNN app with provider authentication
CNN also listed CNN.com, connected-TV apps, and mobile apps as viewing destinations. However, the 2024 announcement described this access for viewers who authenticated with a participating pay-TV provider. In other words, opening CNN.com or installing the CNN app did not automatically create a free live stream of the special.
- Install the CNN app on a supported television, streaming player, phone, or tablet—or open CNN.com on a compatible browser.
- Choose the live CNN feed or the sign-in option when prompted.
- Select your participating TV provider.
- Enter the provider username and password, or complete the provider’s activation process.
- Return to the live feed and confirm that the broadcast plays before the countdown begins.
Current CNN access arrangements may also include CNN All Access, a direct CNN subscription for live news and CNN video content. That is a later access structure and should not be confused with the authentication method identified in CNN’s announcement for the 2024–25 event. Check CNN’s current subscription page for the plan, device, and geographic terms that apply when you are watching.
What you need to watch on a TV
You need two separate things:
- Access rights: A Max subscription for the historical 2024–25 Max route, a live-TV subscription such as Sling Blue or Hulu + Live TV, or an eligible TV-provider login for CNN.com or the CNN app.
- A compatible device and internet connection: This might be a smart TV, streaming player, computer, phone, or tablet. A stable broadband connection is recommended for live video.
A streaming device does not supply CNN by itself. Buying a Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV device will not unlock the live channel unless you also have the required subscription or provider credentials.
Using an Amazon Fire TV device
CNN’s device documentation lists Amazon Fire TV devices, including supported Fire TV Stick models running Fire OS 5.1 or later. If your television lacks a compatible app platform, an Amazon Fire TV Stick can provide a straightforward way to install and open the CNN app, subject to the app’s current device requirements.
Check the exact model before buying. CNN’s documentation specifically notes that the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select was not supported at the time of that device check, so it would be inaccurate to assume that every current Fire TV model works. The stick is a hardware solution only: you would still need the applicable CNN subscription or authenticated TV-provider access.
What was not confirmed as a free option
CNN did not establish the 2024–25 event as a permanently free stream. The official event information separately identified Max for subscribers and CNN.com or CNN apps for authenticated pay-TV customers. That distinction matters:
- Do not assume that the CNN homepage provides an unrestricted live stream simply because it is accessible without a cable subscription.
- Do not assume that a free trial, if offered by a third-party service, will necessarily cover the event or be available in your location.
- Do not assume that a clip, highlights page, or social-media video is the full live broadcast.
- Do not rely on a replay being available after the event unless CNN specifically lists one.

The CNN app asks for a TV-provider login
That behavior is expected for authenticated CNN access. Confirm that your television or internet provider participates, then sign in using the provider credentials—not necessarily the credentials for a separate streaming service.
The app is unavailable on your television
Check CNN’s current supported-device list. If the TV is not supported, use CNN.com on a computer, a supported phone or tablet, or a compatible Roku, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV device. Confirm the exact hardware model, since support can differ within a product family.

The stream keeps buffering
Close other high-bandwidth apps, restart the streaming device and router, and use a wired connection or a stronger Wi-Fi signal if available. Test the live feed well before midnight rather than waiting until the busiest part of the broadcast.
You cannot find the 2024–25 replay
CNN’s event materials establish where the live broadcast was distributed, but they do not guarantee a permanent full-length replay. Search CNN’s current video listings, but do not treat the absence of a replay as a device or login failure.
