The practical method is to connect to a Canadian VPN server, then use the broadcaster’s official Canadian website or app. This may work for some services, but it is not guaranteed, does not provide a subscription or Canadian TV-provider login, and may conflict with a service’s geographic restrictions or terms.
Canadian broadcasters geoblock many streams because online rights are licensed by territory. The CRTC explains that a broadcaster may hold Canadian rights without holding rights to show the same program online abroad.
First, identify the channel or program
“Canadian TV” can mean a CBC newscast, a CTV drama, a Global regional feed, Citytv entertainment, a local station, or a sports event. Each may use a different service and access model.

There is no single official Canadian live-TV app that universally combines CBC, CTV, Global, Citytv, specialty channels, and sports for viewers in the United States.

The simple VPN method
- Choose a reputable VPN with Canadian servers. Check compatibility with your device, Canadian server availability, connection stability, privacy policy, refund terms, and leak protection. Avoid choosing solely on “unblocks everything” advertising, and be cautious with free VPNs.
- Install the VPN on your browser, phone, computer, streaming stick, smart-TV platform, or router, if supported.
- Connect to a Canadian server. Choose a location near the relevant regional feed when the service offers regional programming.
- Open the broadcaster’s official website or app. The VPN changes the apparent network location; it does not supply content rights, a subscription, or provider credentials.
- Sign in or subscribe when required. Use legitimate account and payment information. Some services require a Canadian TV-provider login or Canadian billing eligibility.
- Select the exact live feed or program. A live linear channel, an on-demand episode, a rolling news stream, and a sports event may have different rights.
Streaming platforms can also check IP reputation, cookies, DNS and IPv6 traffic, account country, billing details, device location, app-store region, and login patterns. A Canadian VPN connection therefore does not guarantee access.
Which services cover which channels?
CBC Gem
CBC Gem is the most straightforward official starting point for CBC programming. CBC describes Gem as offering free programming, while premium access adds selected features such as ad-free viewing and CBC News Network live streaming. Free and premium catalogs are not identical, and individual programs or events may still be unavailable outside Canada because of rights restrictions. Gem is not a universal package for CTV, Global, Citytv, TSN, or Sportsnet.
Global TV
Global’s website and app include a Live section, but its full regional live network streams generally require credentials from a participating Canadian television provider. Recent episodes available at no cost in Canada are not the same as unrestricted live television. Global News is a separate use case: its digital properties offer free live news access, but that does not provide the full Global entertainment network.
Citytv+
Citytv live streaming is no longer free. Citytv says live streaming became subscriber-only in May 2026. The pricing page displayed on August 18, 2026, listed a seven-day trial, C$9.99 per month, and C$99 per year, with the monthly price scheduled to increase to C$11.99 on September 22, 2026. Prices are in Canadian dollars, and the terms describe the service as intended for users in Canada. Check the current pricing page before subscribing because prices and channel lineups can change.
CTV and Noovo through Crave
Do not follow older instructions telling you to use the standalone CTV app or CTV.ca as the primary route. Bell Media announced that CTV and Noovo website and app content moved to Crave beginning May 1, 2026. Check Crave for the particular show, live channel, news stream, or event. Availability depends on the plan, device, territory, and rights.

Sports
Canadian sports rights are especially fragmented and may involve blackouts or regional restrictions. Check the event’s official rights-holder—such as TSN or Sportsnet—before paying. Do not assume that CBC Gem, Crave, TSN, or Sportsnet carries every Canadian broadcast or an event that is available in the United States.

What you need
- Reliable broadband and a supported viewing device
- A VPN app compatible with that device
- The official broadcaster website or app
- Required account credentials
- A Canadian TV-provider subscription where demanded
- Possibly a Canadian payment method, depending on the service
- Realistic expectations about buffering, VPN detection, and changing rights
Budget separately for the VPN and any broadcaster subscription. A VPN is only the location layer. It does not replace a Canadian cable, satellite, or IPTV relationship where one is required.

- Close the app or browser completely.
- Reconnect to a different Canadian VPN server.
- Clear the site’s cookies or use a private browser window.
- Enable the VPN’s DNS and IPv6 leak protection.
- Review location permissions for the streaming app.
- Confirm that the program is actually available live and in your selected region.
- Check whether the service requires Canadian provider credentials, a specific plan, or Canadian billing eligibility.
- Try the official website instead of the app, or the app instead of the website.
If the service continues to refuse access, use an authorized U.S. rights-holder or an official free news stream rather than an unofficial IPTV list, copied stream URL, or “unlocking” browser extension.

Episodes work, but the live channel does not
This is normal. On-demand and live-linear rights can be separate. Global, for example, distinguishes free episode availability from live access requiring a participating TV-provider login.
The app is missing from a U.S. app store
App-store country settings can affect availability. Do not falsify an account address or payment profile. Try the official website, a supported casting method, another officially supported device, or the service’s support team.

You only want Canadian news
News is often easier to access than full network television. Check Global News and other broadcasters’ official live-news pages, apps, and YouTube channels. Availability varies, and a news stream is not equivalent to a complete entertainment channel.
You live near the Canadian border
An antenna may be more reliable and clearly authorized if your location can receive Canadian over-the-air signals. Reception depends on distance, terrain, transmitter power, antenna height, and interference. It is a regional option, not a nationwide solution.
Is watching Canadian TV with a VPN legal?
There is no useful blanket yes-or-no answer. Geoblocking exists because broadcasters acquire territorial online rights. A VPN may technically make a U.S. connection appear Canadian, but it does not create distribution rights. A service’s terms may restrict use outside Canada or prohibit bypassing geographic controls.
Read the current terms for the specific platform and accept that the service may block the connection, cancel access, or require Canadian account credentials. Do not falsify billing information, evade identity checks, use someone else’s credentials without authorization, or rely on pirate IPTV services. When an official U.S. alternative exists, it is the safer choice.
