Those are announced future dates, so confirm them with Netflix and local theater listings as release approaches.
No title-specific rental, digital-purchase, DVD, Blu-ray, Kanopy, or Hoopla availability has been established. The practical plan is to use the theatrical release if a participating cinema is near you, or wait for the Netflix premiere; treat any later transactional or library listing as a new availability update rather than an assumption.
Confirmed ways to watch 14th
The following is the most reliable status available as of October 13, 2026. Netflix Tudum is the primary announcement for the release schedule, while the library services’ own pages describe their general access models rather than confirming this film.
| Access route | Current status | Timing or geography | What is not yet known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix subscription streaming | Announced | Global premiere scheduled for Friday, December 4, 2026 | No title-specific price or plan requirement was stated in the announcement |
| Theatrical screening | Announced | Select cinemas in the United States and United Kingdom beginning Friday, November 27, 2026 | Participating theaters, showtimes, ticket providers, and ticket prices were not identified |
| Digital rental or purchase | Not established | No date or storefront was announced | A later transactional listing could appear, but the announced Netflix date does not prove one will |
| Kanopy or Hoopla | Not established for this title | Access generally depends on a participating library or university | Neither service was confirmed as carrying 14th |
| DVD or Blu-ray | Not established | No physical edition was substantiated | There is no verified disc release date, distributor, or edition to order |

What the announced premiere means
Netflix says 14th will premiere globally on Friday, December 4, 2026. “Global” describes the announced streaming rollout, but a future announcement is not a guarantee that every account will display the title at exactly the same local clock time. Check the title page in your own country when the date is close, especially if you travel or use an account registered in another region.

The announcement establishes Netflix as the streaming platform; it does not publish a separate rental price, purchase price, or disc plan. A Netflix premiere therefore answers where the film is scheduled to stream, not whether a separate transactional version will also be offered.
How to check when the date arrives
- Open the Netflix service you normally use in the country where you will watch.
- Search for 14th together with “Ava DuVernay.” This helps distinguish the documentary from unrelated works with the same or similar title.
- Open the title page and verify that the description identifies DuVernay’s documentary about the long battle over the 14th Amendment.
- Check the displayed availability date and any account-level playback notice. If the title does not appear, search again after the announced date and confirm that your profile and region are correct.
- Use Netflix’s own help or title information if the date shown for your account differs from the public announcement.
Do not treat an early trailer, news item, or search-result snippet as proof that the film is already playable. The title page in your local Netflix service is the useful check on the day you intend to watch.
The theatrical release
Where and when it is scheduled
Netflix Tudum announced a theatrical release in select U.S. and U.K. theaters beginning Friday, November 27, 2026. “Select” means this is not an announced nationwide run. The release notice does not name participating cinemas, cities, showtimes, ticketing companies, or prices.
Finding a screening
- About one to two weeks before November 27, search the websites of cinemas in your area for “14th” and “Ava DuVernay.” Listings may appear later than the announcement.
- Check both independent cinemas and larger chains, because the announcement does not identify the type or size of participating venue.
- Verify the screening date, theater address, language or caption information shown by the cinema, and the final ticket price before traveling.
- If no local listing appears, widen the search to nearby cities in your country. A missing listing is not evidence that the film has been canceled; it may simply mean your cinema is not part of the selective run.
- Use the cinema’s own ticket page for the final confirmation, since third-party listings can lag behind a venue’s schedule.
The theatrical option is the earliest announced public viewing route. It is also the route with the greatest geographic uncertainty because no participating locations have been published.

Rental and digital-purchase availability
No official release article or current U.S. availability listing establishes a rental or digital-purchase option for 14th. JustWatch’s current U.S. entry points to the upcoming Netflix date rather than a confirmed transactional listing. JustWatch is an aggregator and can change, so its present status should be treated as a snapshot, not a promise that a rental or purchase listing will never appear.
How to check responsibly
- Search a reputable digital-movie aggregator by the exact title and director.
- Open the individual listing and verify that its synopsis identifies DuVernay’s 14th-Amendment documentary, not another film called 14th.
- Follow the linked storefront to confirm that the offer is live in your country, rather than merely announced or available in another territory.
- Read whether the offer is a rental, a purchase, or a subscription stream. Those are different rights and may have different viewing periods, download rules, or device limits.
- Check the date of the listing before paying. A page that says “coming soon” is not a current rental or purchase.
There is no title-specific price to report. Do not infer a rental cost from another DuVernay film or from a generic store page.
Library, Kanopy, and Hoopla access
What these services can and cannot confirm
Kanopy and Hoopla are library-linked services. Their general descriptions explain that a viewer normally needs access through a participating public library, college, or university, and that catalog availability is controlled by the institution and service. Those general access rules do not establish that either service will carry 14th.
Checking your own library
- Sign in to your public-library or university catalog and search the exact title, director, and subject terms.
- Check the catalog’s streaming-video section as well as the physical-media section; a film can appear in one collection and not the other.
- If your institution provides Kanopy or Hoopla, open that service through the institution’s own link and repeat the search there.
- Confirm that the result is the documentary about the 14th Amendment and that your institution has current lending rights.
- Review any borrow limits, waitlists, expiration dates, or geographic restrictions shown before starting playback.
If your catalog has no result, ask the library whether it accepts purchase or licensing suggestions. A request is not a guarantee of acquisition, and the absence of a listing today does not predict a later catalog decision.

DVD and Blu-ray status
No title-specific DVD or Blu-ray edition has been substantiated. That means there is currently no verified disc format, distributor, release date, regional code, subtitle specification, or retailer listing to recommend. Generic product pages for other films called 14th should not be treated as editions of DuVernay’s documentary.
Collectors who want a physical copy should wait for an announcement from the film’s rights holder or an established retailer that identifies the director, documentary subject, format, and release details together. Until then, the confirmed plans are the selective theatrical run and Netflix streaming premiere.
What Ava DuVernay’s film is about
Netflix describes 14th as a documentary chronicling the long battle over the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment. The film is framed around the question “Who gets to belong?” That description distinguishes this project from unrelated films, episodes, or historical works that use “14th” in their titles.
Netflix Tudum reports that DuVernay conducted more than 50 expert interviews, including conversations with scholars, lawyers, curators, cultural workers, and political figures. The figure is attributed to Netflix Tudum’s 2026 announcement; it is not a claim that every interview will appear in full in the finished film.

The project comes from ARRAY. DuVernay is the director and is listed as a producer alongside Spencer Averick, Tammy Garnes, and Paul Garnes.
The film’s stated relationship to 13th
In Netflix Tudum’s August 20, 2026 announcement, DuVernay said: “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted.” The quotation is DuVernay’s framing of the relationship between the two documentaries. It should not be read as a promise that 14th is a sequel with identical structure, contributors, or subject coverage.

If you want to watch as early as possible
Look for a participating U.S. or U.K. theater during the run beginning November 27. Because locations have not been announced, availability depends on where you live and whether a nearby cinema joins the selective release.
If you are outside the United States or United Kingdom
The announced theatrical release is limited to select venues in those two countries. The announced global Netflix premiere is the relevant planned route for viewers elsewhere, subject to the title appearing in the Netflix service serving your location.

If you need a rental or purchase
There is no confirmed transactional option to choose today. Monitor a current availability aggregator and the storefronts it identifies, then verify the exact title and territory before paying. Do not substitute an unrelated title or assume that a Netflix premiere automatically creates a rental listing.
If you rely on library borrowing
Search your institution’s catalog and its Kanopy or Hoopla connection close to release. Access is institution-specific, and no title listing has been established. A library may add the film later, but that outcome cannot be promised from the services’ general access pages.
How to avoid confusing this film with another 14th
Use three identifiers whenever you search: Ava DuVernay as director, the documentary classification, and the 14th-Amendment subject. Matching only the short title can surface unrelated films, user-created videos, historical programs, or products. A correct listing should connect the title with DuVernay and the question of belonging described by Netflix.
- Director: Ava DuVernay.

When to recheck the schedule
Both announced dates are future plans as of October 13, 2026. Recheck Netflix and local cinema listings shortly before November 27 for theater locations, then again before December 4 for the streaming title page. Release plans, participating venues, and catalog entries can be updated after an announcement.
