The quickest route for each device
- Compatible smart TV: Open the television’s app store, search for “Apple TV,” install the app, open it, and sign in.
- Streaming device: Use the device’s app store in the same way. Fire TV, Android TV, Sony televisions, and other platforms can have different purchase and feature rules by region.
- iPhone: Open the Apple TV app and sign in with the Apple Account associated with your subscription.
- iPhone to television: Start playback in the Apple TV app, tap AirPlay, and select an Apple TV 4K or AirPlay 2-enabled television on the same Wi-Fi network.
If the app does not appear in a device’s store, treat that as a compatibility or regional-availability question first. It does not by itself mean that the television is faulty.
What you need before installing
A supported device in your country
Apple says the Apple TV app, its features, and supported devices vary by country and region. The exact television model and the software platform matter, so check the device manufacturer’s compatibility information and search the device’s own app store. A television sold under the same brand can have different app support in different markets or model years.
An Apple Account
You will need the Apple Account used for the subscription. Keep the account password or another approved sign-in method available. Some activities, including purchases, may require the account to be ready for purchases even when watching an existing subscription works.

A reliable internet connection
Streaming quality depends on the connection between the device and the service. Apple’s UK support guidance states that “Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster.” That is Apple’s stated HD threshold, not a promise that every home connection at exactly that speed will remain stable when other people or devices are using the network.
How do I watch Apple TV+ on my smart TV?
1. Open the television’s app store
Use the TV remote to open the store supplied with the television. Search for Apple TV, rather than searching only for “Apple TV+.” The service is accessed through the Apple TV app.
2. Check the result before downloading
If the app appears, confirm that it is the official Apple TV app and select the install or download command. If there is no result, check the television’s country setting, the model’s supported-app list, and the manufacturer’s support pages. Apple notes that supported devices and features differ by country and region.
3. Open the app and choose a sign-in method
Launch the app after installation. Apple says the sign-in flow may offer a QR code that you scan with a phone, or it may ask you to visit link.apple.com and enter the code shown on the television. If those options are not offered, signing in with the remote may be available. Follow the method displayed on your screen; the exact prompts can vary by device.

4. Confirm the account
Use the Apple Account associated with your subscription. After authentication, the app should load the account’s available content. If the app opens but the expected subscription is missing, sign out and repeat the process with the correct account rather than creating a second account.
5. Test playback
Start a program and let it play for a minute. Testing immediately can distinguish an account or installation problem from a later network problem. If the app cannot play or asks for a purchase, review the purchase restrictions for your device and region before reinstalling anything.
What if the Apple TV app is missing from my smart TV?
A missing app usually has one of three explanations: the television is not a supported model, the app is not offered in that country, or the TV’s software and app store need an update. Search the manufacturer’s compatibility information and verify the TV’s region settings. Apple’s guidance does not establish support for every model, so do not assume that a newer-looking television will necessarily have the app.

If the television is supported but installation or internet access fails, Apple advises contacting the device manufacturer for help. The manufacturer controls the TV’s app store, firmware, network menus, and remote behavior.
How do I sign in to Apple TV on my TV?
Open the installed Apple TV app and follow the on-screen sign-in flow. Depending on the device, you may be able to:
- Scan a QR code with a phone.
- Open
link.apple.comon a phone or computer and enter the code displayed by the television. - Type the Apple Account details with the remote.
The QR-code and web-code methods reduce typing on a television remote, but they still authenticate the same Apple Account. Check the code carefully before submitting it and do not enter account credentials into an unrelated page.
How do I get Apple TV on my phone?
iPhone
Open the Apple TV app on the iPhone and sign in with the Apple Account used for the subscription. Apple’s iPhone guide places search at the bottom of the screen. Use it to find a title, then open the title’s page and select the play control.
The iPhone app can be used on its own, without a television or streaming box. Your account access follows the Apple Account rather than the particular screen, so an item already purchased, rented, or subscribed to on a supported device may be available on another supported device signed in to that same account.

Apple’s user guide also covers Android devices, but the exact app availability and features depend on country and device. Search the phone’s app store for the Apple TV app and check that the listing is available in your region. Once installed, use the account sign-in flow shown by the app; Apple describes search at the bottom of the screen on Android as well as iPhone.
Can I watch Apple TV on a TV without the app?
Yes, if the television supports AirPlay 2 and you have an iPhone, or if you use an Apple TV 4K connected to the television. AirPlay is separate from installing the Apple TV app directly on the TV. It sends playback from the phone to a compatible television or Apple TV device.

AirPlay requirements
- The destination must be an Apple TV 4K or an AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV.
- The iPhone and destination television or Apple TV must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- The Apple TV app or another supported video app must be playing a video.
Send a program from iPhone to the television
- Open the Apple TV app on the iPhone and start the program.
- Tap the screen to show playback controls.
- Tap the AirPlay icon.
- Select the Apple TV 4K or television from the device list.
- If a passcode appears on the television, enter that passcode on the iPhone.
If the destination does not appear, verify the same-Wi-Fi requirement and confirm that the television supports AirPlay 2. A television that lacks the Apple TV app may still support AirPlay, but ordinary screen mirroring and AirPlay video playback are not interchangeable on every model.

Choose direct installation when the television or streaming device has the app and you want the simplest living-room control. Choose AirPlay when the TV lacks the app but supports AirPlay 2 and you already use an iPhone. Choose a separate Apple TV 4K only when built-in app access is unavailable or the dedicated device better fits your setup.

Apple does not promise identical features on every screen. The app, available content, supported devices, and transactions can all vary by country and region. The following limitations are specifically documented:
- In the United States, users can subscribe on Amazon Fire TV and through Prime Video, but they cannot buy other content within the Apple TV app there.
- On Fire TV in other regions, Android TV, and Sony TV devices, in-app purchases are unavailable according to Apple’s device guidance.
- You can buy, rent, or subscribe on another supported device and then watch the item on the TV app when that TV is signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Not every living-room device supports transactions on the device itself, even if it can play content already associated with the account.
These rules concern transactions, not necessarily playback. A TV may be able to stream a subscription or previously purchased item while still requiring another device for a new purchase or rental.
Streaming-device setup
Fire TV
Open the Fire TV app store, search for Apple TV, install the app, and complete its sign-in prompts. In the United States, subscriptions can be handled on Fire TV and through Prime Video, but the Apple TV app does not support buying other content there. Outside the United States, Apple documents additional transaction restrictions on Fire TV, so complete a new purchase or rental on another supported device if the TV app does not offer that option.
Android TV
Use the Android TV app store to search for and install Apple TV. Apple states that in-app purchases are unavailable on Android TV. Sign in and watch eligible content, but use another supported device for a new purchase, rental, or subscription when required.
Sony televisions
On a supported Sony television, install Apple TV from the television’s app store and follow the displayed sign-in process. Apple lists Sony TV among devices where in-app purchases are unavailable. Playback of content already linked to the same Apple Account can still be possible.

Other streaming platforms
For any other platform, the reliable test is the platform’s own app store and the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Apple’s general guide covers televisions and living-room devices but warns that features and content are not available on every streaming device or in every country.

The app will not open or a title will not play
- Check Apple’s System Status page for a service interruption.
- Confirm that the app is signed in to the Apple Account used for the subscription.
- Test the internet connection on the TV or streaming device. If mobile data is unreliable on a phone, try Wi-Fi.
- Reduce competing network use, such as large downloads or high-bandwidth streams on other devices.
- Restart the smart TV or streaming device, then open Apple TV again.
Video quality is poor or playback keeps stopping
Apple’s stated HD threshold is 8 Mbit/s or faster. If the connection meets that threshold but playback still stops, congestion, Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, or a service interruption may be involved. Stop competing network activity, restart the affected device, and test again. On devices that support downloads, Apple also suggests downloading a title to determine whether a local playback test is more stable.
The subscription is not visible
Sign out and back in with the Apple Account that owns the subscription. Avoid assuming that the account used for the television’s app store is the same account used for Apple TV. If the account is correct but a purchase or subscription cannot be started on the TV, check the device’s transaction restrictions and complete the transaction on another supported device.

The sign-in code or QR flow fails
Restart the Apple TV app and request a new code. Enter the newly displayed code at link.apple.com if that option is shown. A code is tied to the current sign-in session, so an older code may no longer work. If remote sign-in is offered, it is an alternative.
Resetting the app
Apple says the Apple TV app can be reset from its Settings menu. Resetting removes personal information and restores the app’s original settings. Use this only after recording any account details you need and after trying a normal sign-out or device restart. You will have to complete setup and sign in again.
When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the television or streaming-device manufacturer for problems installing the app, opening the device’s app store, connecting the device to the internet, updating firmware, or operating the remote. Contact Apple for account and service-status issues after confirming that the device itself is online.
When an Apple TV 4K makes sense
An Apple TV 4K is an optional dedicated streaming device. It can be a practical fallback when a television does not offer the Apple TV app, when the built-in platform is no longer supported, or when you want a separate living-room interface. It is not a universal requirement: a compatible smart TV, streaming device, iPhone, or AirPlay 2 television may already provide everything needed.
Before buying one, confirm the current model, your country’s availability, and the television’s available connection. The device must still be signed in to the Apple Account used for the subscription. A separate box does not remove regional content or transaction restrictions attached to the account or service.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you see Apple TV in the TV’s app store? Install it and use the on-screen sign-in flow.
- Is the app absent? Check the exact model, country, region setting, and manufacturer support information.
- Do you have an iPhone and an AirPlay 2 television? Use AirPlay if both devices can join the same Wi-Fi network.
- Does the device refuse a purchase? Complete the purchase, rental, or subscription on another supported device, then sign in on the TV.
- Is playback unstable? Check service status, account access, connection speed, competing network use, and device restart in that order.
- Are you considering extra hardware? Treat Apple TV 4K as a fallback, not a prerequisite.
Bottom line
Start with the Apple TV app on the screen you already own. Install it from a compatible TV or streaming-device app store, or open it directly on an iPhone. Use AirPlay only when the television supports AirPlay 2 or is connected to an Apple TV 4K, and keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. If the app, a feature, or a purchase is missing, check the exact device and region before replacing hardware.
