What you need to watch Apple TV+ documentaries
Apple TV+ is a subscription streaming service for Apple Originals, including documentaries. Apple describes it as offering “award-winning series, compelling dramas, groundbreaking documentaries, kids’ entertainment, comedies, and more—with new items added every month.” You watch through the Apple TV app rather than through a separate documentary-only service.

Apple devices
The Apple TV app is available on Apple devices covered by Apple’s current software and service support. Apple specifically documents offline downloads on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. That makes one of these devices the most flexible choice if you need to watch while traveling or without a reliable connection.

Compatible smart TVs and streaming devices
Apple supports the Apple TV app on selected smart TVs and streaming devices. The exact app, sign-in flow, and available features depend on the model, operating system, and region. A television that can play the app may not offer every feature available on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac; offline downloads, for example, are documented for those Apple devices rather than for every television or streaming player.
Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K is a dedicated streaming box that can put the Apple TV app on a television. It is an optional hardware route. If you already have a supported smart TV, streaming device, iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you do not need to purchase Apple TV 4K solely to watch Apple TV+ documentaries. How to watch an Apple TV+ documentary
- Choose a supported device. Use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, compatible smart TV, supported streaming device, or Apple TV 4K. Confirm that the Apple TV app is available for your model and region.
- Open or install the Apple TV app. On an Apple device, launch the built-in or available Apple TV app. On a smart TV or streaming device, open its app store and look for the Apple TV app if it is not already installed.
- Sign in with the account that has the subscription. If you are not subscribed, the app will present a subscription option. If another household member pays for the service through Family Sharing, use the Apple account associated with that family group rather than starting a second subscription.
- Open the Apple TV subscription area. Browse the Apple Originals catalog and select a documentary. The app may also display rentals, purchases, or third-party channels alongside Apple TV+ programming, so check the title’s access label before pressing play.
- Start playback. Select the documentary and use the on-screen playback controls. If the title does not appear, availability may differ in your country or region, the app may not support your device, or you may be signed in to an account without the relevant subscription.

Can you watch Apple TV+ documentaries offline?

- Mac: Use the Apple TV app and download the documentary before leaving a connection.
- Smart TVs, streaming devices, and Apple TV 4K: Do not assume that downloads are supported. Apple’s documented offline-download support in the cited material is for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Downloading is different from streaming. A documentary saved on an iPhone does not automatically make it available on a television unless you use a supported playback or casting method; the download itself remains on the device where it was made.
How to subscribe to Apple TV+
The exact offer shown at signup can vary by country, region, account, device, and eligibility. Do not assume that every viewer receives a free trial or the same price. Review the terms and recurring charge displayed on your screen before confirming.

- Select the Apple TV subscription area and tap the subscription button shown there.
- Review the displayed subscription details, including the offer and billing information.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the subscription.
The same Apple guide explains that eligible subscriptions may be bundled through Apple One. Whether Apple One is offered, and which services or terms appear, depends on your region and account. Check the package shown during signup instead of assuming that bundling is available.

Subscribe on another device
On a supported smart TV, streaming device, or Apple TV 4K, open the Apple TV app and follow the subscription prompts displayed for that device. Labels and payment screens can differ. If the app directs you to complete signup elsewhere, follow that route and note which provider ultimately processes the payment; that information determines how you will cancel later.
What an Apple TV+ subscription includes—and what it does not
The Apple TV app is a storefront and viewing app that can show several kinds of content. The Apple TV+ subscription is only one of them. Confusing the app with the subscription is the most common reason viewers expect a documentary to be included when it is not.

How Family Sharing works for Apple TV+
Apple says Apple TV+ can be shared with up to five other family members through Family Sharing. The people you intend to share with must be part of the relevant Family Sharing group, and each person should use their own Apple account rather than sharing one password.
Family Sharing is useful when several people in a household watch on different devices. It does not change regional availability, device compatibility, or the distinction between Apple TV+ and separately billed channels or rentals. If another family member cannot see the subscription, check that they are signed in to the Apple account added to the Family Sharing group and that the app is using that account.

How to cancel Apple TV+
Cancellation is controlled by the company that bills you. Start by checking the receipt, account settings, or subscription screen that identifies the payment provider. If you cannot find an Apple cancellation button, that may be evidence that Google Play or Amazon—not Apple—is processing the subscription.

Apple’s support instructions give this web path:
- Go to tv.apple.com.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Open the account icon and choose Settings.
- In Subscriptions, choose Manage.
- Select Cancel Subscription and complete the confirmation steps shown.

If Google Play bills you
Apple says a subscription billed through Google Play must be canceled through the Apple TV app on Android or through play.google.com. Sign in to the Google account that made the subscription and use its subscription-management controls. Canceling an unrelated Apple-billed subscription in the Apple TV website will not manage a Google Play subscription.
If Amazon bills you
Apple says subscriptions billed through Amazon must be canceled through Amazon. Open the Amazon account that processed the charge and use Amazon’s subscription controls. Apple’s website cannot cancel a subscription whose recurring billing is managed by Amazon.
If you use Apple TV 4K
Apple’s device-specific route for subscription changes is:

- Choose Profiles and Accounts.
- Select a profile.
- Choose Subscriptions.

What to check after canceling
- Look for a confirmation. Save the confirmation screen or email and note the account used.
- Check the provider’s subscription page. The status should show that recurring billing has been canceled or that the subscription is otherwise no longer set to renew.
- Check for duplicate subscriptions. A household can accidentally create separate Apple, Google Play, or Amazon subscriptions. Review each provider where a charge might have been started.
- Do not delete the app as a substitute for cancellation. Removing the Apple TV app from a device does not tell the billing provider to stop a recurring subscription.
Common problems and the right fix
The Apple TV app is not available on your television
App support varies by smart-TV and streaming-device model, operating system, and region. Check the manufacturer’s app store and Apple’s supported-device information. If your television is not supported, use another supported device—such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, compatible streaming device, or Apple TV 4K—instead of assuming that every television can install the app.
A documentary is missing from the catalog
First verify that you are in the Apple TV subscription area and signed in to the subscribing account. Then check regional availability: Apple states that availability and features vary by country or region. A title shown in another country’s article, search result, or recommendation is not proof that it is available where you live.
The title asks for a separate payment
The app can display Apple TV+ programming alongside third-party channels and content available to rent or buy. Read the title’s access label. If it says rent, buy, or subscribe to another channel, that transaction is separate from Apple TV+.

There is no download button
Use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, where Apple documents offline downloads. Do not expect the same control on every smart TV, streaming device, or Apple TV 4K. If the button is absent on an Apple device, check that you are signed in correctly, connected to the internet, and using a supported app version.
You cannot find a cancel option
Identify the billing provider before changing anything. Apple-billed subscriptions use Apple’s account or web controls; Google Play-billed subscriptions use Google Play; Amazon-billed subscriptions use Amazon. A missing button often means you are looking in the wrong provider’s account rather than that cancellation is impossible.
A family member cannot access the service
Confirm that the person is included in the Family Sharing group, is signed in with the Apple account associated with that group, and is using a supported device and region. Family Sharing does not add separately purchased rentals or third-party channel subscriptions to Apple TV+.
Which viewing route should you choose?

Keep the four Apple TV terms separate
- Apple TV app: The application used to browse and play content on supported devices.
- Apple TV+: The subscription service containing Apple Originals, including documentaries.
- Apple TV 4K: Optional streaming hardware for a television.
- Apple TV channels and Store content: Separately subscribed, rented, or purchased items that may appear inside the same app.
Keeping these terms separate prevents two expensive mistakes: buying hardware you do not need and paying for content you thought was included in Apple TV+.

- Before subscribing, check the displayed offer, recurring billing terms, country or region, and account you are using.
- Record whether the payment is processed by Apple, Google Play, or Amazon.
- For household access, set up Family Sharing and have each member sign in with their own account.
- For travel, download documentaries in advance on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac rather than relying on a television app to work offline.
- When you are ready to stop, cancel through the original billing provider and keep the confirmation.
