How to Watch American Netflix in 2026: What Works Abroad and What Doesn’t

A VPN can make your connection appear to be in the United States, but Netflix may restrict VPN viewing. Here’s how to try it and what to do when it fails.

You can try to access the U.S. Netflix catalog from abroad by connecting to a U.S. server with a VPN, then reopening Netflix. It is not guaranteed: Netflix may limit VPN viewing to titles it has worldwide rights to, or show a VPN/proxy error. If you are a U.S. subscriber traveling and simply want to keep watching, try Netflix without a VPN first; the catalog may change, but your subscription can still work abroad.

Quick setup: try a U.S. VPN connection

  1. Use an active Netflix membership. A VPN does not provide a Netflix subscription.
  2. Choose a VPN provider that advertises Netflix streaming support, has U.S. server locations, and supports your device. Treat the provider’s claim as an attempt, not a guarantee.
  3. Install the VPN app on your computer, phone, tablet, or supported streaming device and sign in.
  4. Connect to a server in the United States.
  5. Close and reopen Netflix, then sign in and search for the title.
  6. If the title is missing, test another U.S. server. If Netflix reports a proxy or VPN, follow the troubleshooting steps below or turn the VPN off.

Netflix says VPN users may see only titles for which it has worldwide rights rather than the full catalog associated with the VPN location. It also says VPNs are unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing. See Netflix’s VPN guidance and proxy-error troubleshooting.

What changes when you connect from another country?

Catalog and connection location are not the same as account country

Netflix has different catalogs in different countries because distribution rights and other regional conditions vary. Your connection location is the country Netflix associates with your current internet connection; a VPN can make that connection appear to come from the United States. That does not change the country on your Netflix account. Netflix says the account country changes only if you move to a new country. Read Netflix’s explanation of country and catalog changes.

Traveling subscribers can normally use Netflix without a VPN

A U.S. subscriber abroad can generally open Netflix and watch without trying to simulate a U.S. connection. The available titles, downloads, audio and subtitles, maturity ratings, My List, and Continue Watching can differ from what is available at home. Netflix describes these travel changes at Watching Netflix while traveling.

A VPN does not promise the U.S. catalog

Netflix may identify VPN or proxy connections and restrict what they can watch. Some VPN providers advertise U.S. Netflix access, but that is a vendor claim, not a Netflix guarantee. For example, ExpressVPN markets Netflix streaming support and its troubleshooting guide recommends trying other server locations when playback fails.

Set it up on your device

Windows or Mac

  1. Subscribe to Netflix and the VPN separately, then install the VPN’s desktop app.
  2. Sign in to the VPN and connect to a U.S. server.
  3. Open a browser window and go to Netflix, sign in, and search for the title. A browser is often easier to troubleshoot than a TV app because you can switch servers and test again quickly.
  4. If the title is absent or playback fails, try another U.S. server or the troubleshooting sequence below.

iPhone, iPad, and Android phones or tablets

  1. Install the VPN app from the device’s official app store and sign in.
  2. Connect to a U.S. server, then force-close and reopen Netflix.
  3. Search for the title. If the app still appears to show the prior catalog, sign out and back in or restart the app.

Results can vary with cached app data, cellular routing, device settings, and VPN features such as split tunneling. Netflix does not establish that GPS location alone determines the catalog.

Fire TV and Android TV

If your device supports your VPN provider’s app, install it directly, connect to a U.S. server, and restart Netflix. Check compatibility for your specific device and operating-system version; support on one streaming platform does not establish support on every smart TV.

Apple TV and TVs without a VPN app

If your television or Apple TV does not support a compatible VPN app, alternatives include installing the VPN on a supported router, sharing a VPN connection from a computer, or using a compatible Fire TV or Android TV streaming device. Some providers offer Smart DNS, but it is not the same as a VPN: it generally does not encrypt traffic in the same way and its compatibility and Netflix results vary.

Routers and game consoles

A VPN-enabled router can cover a television or console that cannot run a VPN app, but it affects devices connected through that router and may require model-specific configuration. Before changing router firmware, check that the exact router model and firmware are supported, back up its settings, and follow the provider’s own guide. A mistaken firmware installation can disrupt the router. Router processing limits or the added VPN route may also reduce speed.

Consoles may be connected through a VPN-enabled router or, where supported, a computer’s shared connection. There is no single reliable setup path for every console, router, and VPN combination, so verify the provider’s instructions for the exact hardware.

Fix a VPN or proxy error

If Netflix displays “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” (which can include error E106), work through these checks. Netflix’s current instructions are at Netflix Help.

  1. Check whether the connection is using a VPN. On a device on the same network, visit Fast.com, let the test finish, select Show more info, and check the country beside Client. Netflix recommends this check.
  2. Check your plan and what you are trying to watch. Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported viewing. Turn off the VPN for those experiences.
  3. Try another U.S. server. A different server may use an IP address Netflix has not blocked, but server switching is a troubleshooting attempt, not a guarantee.
  4. Restart Netflix. Force-close the app or close the browser tab, then reopen it.
  5. Sign out and sign back in. This can refresh the app’s session after changing the connection.
  6. Test in a browser. If the app fails, try Netflix in a browser on the same device or network.
  7. Review VPN network features. Following your provider’s instructions, test whether split tunneling, custom DNS, ad or malware blocking, or IPv6 settings are causing a location mismatch. Do not change settings blindly if you rely on them for privacy or security.
  8. Check DNS and location consistency. If Netflix’s location check does not match your actual connection, a VPN or DNS configuration may be involved. Netflix advises checking whether the connection is using the ISP’s DNS server if the issue persists.
  9. Turn off the VPN for normal travel viewing. This is Netflix’s recommended fallback when the VPN causes the error and you only need to use your subscription abroad.

If Netflix shows only Originals or worldwide titles

That may be a rights restriction rather than a broken app: Netflix says VPN connections may be limited to titles available worldwide. You can try another U.S. server, restart Netflix, and test in a browser. If the title remains unavailable, confirm that it is currently offered in the U.S. catalog; availability changes. Turn off the VPN if you would rather use the local catalog.

If Netflix says the account cannot be used in your location

Netflix lists unauthorized account sellers among possible causes of location-related account problems. Do not buy an account from a reseller as a workaround; see Netflix’s guidance on accounts from unauthorized retailers.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

If video quality is poor

VPN congestion, the distance to the U.S. server, weak hotel or public Wi-Fi, router limits, and the device can all affect playback. Try a less congested U.S. server, use Ethernet where practical, and compare playback with the VPN off. Video quality adapts to connection conditions; a VPN does not guarantee 4K or eliminate buffering. ExpressVPN also notes that VPN download speed can affect Netflix video quality in its Netflix information.

VPN, Smart DNS, or ordinary travel viewing?

Option What it offers Trade-offs
Full VPN Encrypts network traffic in transit and can be used on computers, phones, some TVs, or a compatible router. Can reduce speed; Netflix may detect and block its IP addresses; device support varies.
Smart DNS Can be easier to configure on some TVs or consoles and may add less performance overhead. Does not provide the same encrypted tunnel as a VPN; compatibility and Netflix access depend on the service.
Browser proxy May be simple to configure for browser traffic. Usually does not cover Netflix apps or TVs; free proxies may be congested, unreliable, or unsafe.
Netflix without a VPN The simplest official option for using an existing subscription while traveling. You will generally see the catalog associated with your current location, not necessarily the U.S. catalog.

Choose a VPN for this use case, not just its headline claim

No provider can promise lasting access to every U.S. title. Compare the features that affect your actual setup, and check the provider’s current terms before paying.

  • Streaming support and troubleshooting: Look for explicit Netflix guidance and practical steps for server changes and device problems.
  • U.S. server choice: Multiple U.S. locations give you more options if one server is blocked or congested.
  • Device coverage: Confirm support for your specific Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, router, or operating system.
  • Performance and connections: Consider distance, server load, simultaneous connections, and whether your home router can handle VPN traffic.
  • Privacy: Review the provider’s logging policy, leak protection, and how it handles DNS and IPv6. A VPN protects traffic in transit but does not make you anonymous to Netflix.
  • Price and refunds: Compare the upfront charge, billing term, renewal amount, refund window, and tax—not only the advertised monthly equivalent.
  • Support: Useful help can matter when a server stops working, but support cannot guarantee Netflix access.

Provider examples: claims and limits

  • ExpressVPN: Markets Netflix streaming support and publishes setup and troubleshooting guidance for streaming. Its setup instructions list an active Netflix account and VPN subscription as prerequisites. Device support and server availability should be checked for your own setup.
  • NordVPN: Offers multiple plan tiers, with the Basic tier focused on VPN functionality and higher tiers adding other tools. Its pricing page lists plan features, device limits, billing terms, and renewal pricing; compare the total charge rather than the promotional equivalent.
  • Proton VPN: Advertises Netflix streaming on its paid Plus or Unlimited plans and says free-server IP addresses are often blocked. Its Netflix page lists supported platforms and says paid users receive a 30-day money-back guarantee. The free tier should not be treated as a dependable Netflix solution.

For a provider-specific example of the difference between promotional and renewal pricing, ExpressVPN’s checkout displayed, on August 16, 2026, a 28-month introductory term including four extra months: Basic at $2.99 per month equivalent ($83.72 initially, then $99.95 annually); Advanced at $4.49 per month equivalent ($125.72 initially, then $119.95 annually); and Express Pro at $7.49 per month equivalent ($209.72 initially, then $199.95 annually). The checkout stated a 30-day money-back guarantee for new users, U.S.-dollar pricing, and possible sales tax. These are dated offers, not guaranteed current prices; consult the official checkout for current terms.

Legal and account considerations

VPN legality varies by country, and legality is separate from Netflix’s terms and a VPN provider’s terms. Check the rules that apply where you are and the services’ current terms. The sources cited here document Netflix restrictions and proxy errors; they do not establish that VPN use automatically cancels an account. Do not use unauthorized account sellers or treat a VPN as a way to bypass payment requirements.

Alternatives if the VPN does not help

  • Use Netflix normally while traveling and browse the local catalog.
  • Download titles before departure where Netflix permits it, while recognizing that downloads may not remain available abroad.
  • Check authorized streaming services in your current country, or rent or buy the title through a legitimate local provider.
  • If the title is not licensed locally, wait for it to become available rather than relying on a VPN connection that Netflix may restrict.
