You can still watch many videos on these older VR headsets, but there is no universal way to play every website, file, or streaming service. For a downloaded movie, use a local video player; for an online video, try the headset browser or, on Rift and Vive, a browser or player on the connected PC. Choose the correct 2D, 3D, 180°, or 360° mode in the player.
These devices are now legacy platforms. Google says Daydream software is unsupported, Samsung documents significant Gear VR app and account changes, and Oculus Go no longer receives platform support. That does not mean every headset has stopped displaying video: it means older installed software may be more dependable than finding a new app or getting a modern website to work.
Choose a playback method
Start with the source of the video and how your headset connects. The routes below are general guidance, not a promise that a particular app or site remains available on every device.

For Oculus Go, Bigscreen’s announcement says Oculus no longer supported Go and that it could not provide future Go updates: Bigscreen’s Oculus Go support announcement. Google says Daydream is unsupported and may not work properly on some devices running Android 11 or later: Google’s Daydream support notice. Samsung describes Gear VR changes in its 2020 support notice and 2024 notice.

Identify the kind of video before pressing play
“Watch in VR” can mean a movie on a virtual cinema screen or an image that surrounds you. Those are different playback modes, and a player may need you to select the right one.

Some players cannot reliably infer projection or stereo information from a downloaded file. A normal movie forced into 180° or 360° mode may look stretched; a 360° file opened as flat video may appear as a distorted rectangle. Begin with flat mode unless you know the video is immersive or 3D.
Watch online video
Oculus Go
- Put on the headset and open the browser from the app library.
- Go to the video website and start playback. Use fullscreen if the site offers it.
- For 180° or 360° footage, use the site’s VR control or a player setting that matches the video’s projection and stereo layout.
- If the page fails, try a simpler version of the site or use a local copy you are entitled to play.
Fullscreen only enlarges a video; it does not necessarily make it immersive. The old browser may also fail on modern login pages, scripts, encryption requirements, codecs, or DRM. Do not assume a new browser can still be installed from the store.

- Connect the Rift to a compatible Windows PC and start the Oculus/Meta PC runtime that works with your system.
- Confirm that the headset is tracking, then open a desktop browser or VR-compatible media application on the PC.
- Open the video page. Use its VR/WebXR mode if supported, or view the video on a virtual screen.
- If immersive mode is unavailable or broken, keep the headset on and use a stable flat theater screen instead.
Rift is not a standalone video headset: playback depends on the PC, graphics drivers, VR runtime, browser, and the website. Exact menus and compatibility vary with software versions.

HTC Vive
- Connect the Vive to a compatible PC, start SteamVR, and confirm that tracking works.
- Launch a SteamVR-compatible video player or desktop browser.
- Open the website or video and use fullscreen, virtual-screen, or the player’s immersive mode.
- For 180° or 360° files, set projection and stereo layout explicitly if the player does not detect them correctly.
HTC’s guidance for supported Vive-family hardware describes playing online 360° YouTube video through VIVE Browser: HTC’s 360° video instructions. This is model-specific guidance, not confirmation that every Vive generation has that browser or can still access YouTube in the same way.
Gear VR
Gear VR needs a compatible Samsung phone mounted in the headset. If a browser or video player is already installed, try it for online video. A site may load in ordinary browser mode without offering a headset or immersive mode; that is a browser limitation, not evidence that the video is 360°.
Samsung said no new Gear VR apps would be released after September 15, 2020, and noted changes including no further Oculus Browser updates in its support notice. Samsung later said that after March 18, 2024, Meta no longer supported new Gear VR app installation or updates and that Oculus-account login and store access were affected: Samsung’s 2024 notice. Existing hardware or installed software may still work, but app availability, login, and websites are not assured. Check compatibility for the exact phone model.

Daydream
Daydream requires a compatible phone and the relevant Daydream software; the phone is as important as the headset. Google says Daydream software no longer receives support or security updates, warns that the app may not work correctly on some Android 11-or-later devices, and says Daydream View is no longer sold: Google’s Daydream support notice. Google’s historical setup guidance also recommended wired headphones because Bluetooth headphones were not supported in that setup: Daydream setup guidance.

If Daydream still works on your phone, try its existing browser or a compatible app. Google notes that third-party experiences may remain available as standalone Android apps, but availability is not guaranteed. Avoid treating Daydream as a current platform to buy into.
Play a downloaded video file
Local playback avoids many website, login, and network problems, but the headset still needs a player that can read the file’s container, codecs, and projection.
Copy a file to a standalone headset or phone
- Use a video you are legally allowed to copy and play.
- Connect the headset or phone to a computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Approve file access or USB data mode on the device if prompted.
- Copy the video to a recognizable folder such as
MoviesorDownloads. - Open an installed media player or file browser and select the video.
- Choose Flat, 180°, 360°, SBS, or Over-Under as appropriate; then recenter the view and adjust screen size, distance, curvature, and subtitles if available.
HTC documents copying videos to the Downloads folder and playing them with VIVEPORT Video on VIVE Flow; its page lists MP4, MKV, and WebM containers for that product: HTC’s VIVE Flow local playback instructions. Those details are for VIVE Flow and should not be assumed to apply to every HTC Vive headset.

Play files from a PC or network
Rift and Vive owners can play files stored on the connected PC through a VR player or show a desktop media player on a virtual screen. For a standalone headset or phone-powered system, a compatible network player may let it browse a PC or NAS without copying the file. In general:

- Put the headset and computer or NAS on the same network.
- Enable media sharing or use a player/server combination supported by software already available on the headset.
- Open the player’s network or shared-media view, select the computer, then select the file.
- Choose the video’s projection and stereo layout.
Network streaming can stutter if Wi-Fi, server compatibility, or bitrate is a poor match for the old player. Copying the file locally is a useful diagnostic and may be more reliable. On PC headsets, a wired connection between the PC and network can reduce one source of variability.

A file extension does not tell the whole story. The container packages the streams; the video and audio codecs encode them. A player might open an MP4 container but fail on its video codec, audio codec, resolution, or bitrate.
- Container: MP4, MKV, and WebM are examples.
- Video codec: H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, VP8, VP9, and AV1 are examples.
- Audio codec: AAC, Opus, AC-3, and others may be present.
- Resolution and bitrate: Older mobile VR hardware can struggle to decode demanding files even when the container is recognized.
For a compatibility-first test, use an ordinary 2D MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at a moderate resolution and bitrate. That is a practical starting point, not a guarantee for every player. Try H.265/HEVC only when support is documented for the particular headset and player; do not assume a newer codec will play better on older hardware.

Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the streams and may help if the container is the issue. Transcoding re-encodes one or more streams and is needed when the codec, audio, bitrate, or resolution is incompatible. Test a converted file locally before investigating network playback.

Troubleshoot common playback problems

| Two images, stretched picture, or a tiny-looking image | Wrong 3D layout or projection | Switch between flat, 180°, and 360°; toggle SBS and over-under; check mono versus stereo; recenter the view. |

| Ordinary movie looks wrapped or distorted | Immersive mode is enabled for flat footage | Disable VR projection and use flat or theater mode. |

What to expect from streaming services
“Any video” cannot be literal. Playback can fail because a service requires DRM or a current login flow, a browser no longer supports the site’s scripts or encryption, a codec is unsupported, the file exceeds the hardware’s decoding ability, or the platform has withdrawn an app or server feature. Purchased streaming content may be less portable than a personal file because DRM can restrict where it plays.
Do not assume the YouTube VR app is a current solution for these five headsets. Google’s current YouTube VR device list names newer devices and does not list Oculus Go, Rift, Gear VR, or Daydream: Google’s YouTube VR device list. This does not rule out every way of opening a YouTube webpage; it means the page does not establish those legacy headsets as supported YouTube VR devices.
Historical browser references can help explain what these platforms once supported, but do not prove current compatibility with a particular site: WebVR.info and Shapespark’s browser and device guide.
When the headset is the limiting factor
If local files work but websites, app installation, or account login do not, the headset may be functioning while its software ecosystem is the obstacle. A current headset or PC setup may be the more practical route if you need modern streaming apps, active browser support, security updates, or reliable access to an app store. Choosing replacement hardware requires checking current product and service support for the specific video services you use.
