To watch a documentary with both accessibility features, verify the exact title and episode first, start playback, turn on captions in the captions or subtitles menu, then choose a separate audio track labeled Audio Description, AD, English AD or a similar title. Availability is not universal across a streaming service: it can vary by documentary, episode, language, country, app and playback device.
PBS, Netflix and Prime Video all document ways to select these tracks. The steps below show the current player paths, explain what to do when an option is missing, and give a reliable method for finding a documentary that has both captions and audio description before you settle in.
What captions and audio description do
Captions and audio description solve different access needs and are controlled separately.
Captions are text on the screen
Captions display spoken dialogue as text. Closed captions can also identify important sounds, such as a phone ringing, music, laughter or an off-screen speaker. Some services use “subtitles” for dialogue-only text and “closed captions” for dialogue plus sound information; check the label shown by the player.

Audio description is an additional sound track
Audio description (AD) narrates visual information that may not be available through dialogue, including actions, facial expressions, costumes, settings and scene changes. PBS Help defines it this way: “Audio Description (AD) or Descriptive Video Service (DVS) is a secondary audio track that describes what’s appearing on screen during a video.” AD is not a caption setting; it is an alternative audio track that must be selected in the audio menu.
Check availability before you start watching
Do not assume that a service’s entire documentary catalog has both features. Use this four-part check for the exact film or episode:
- Confirm the title and episode. A series can offer AD on one episode or season and not another.
- Check the language. Captions and AD may be offered only in particular languages. Look for labels such as English, English CC, English AD or Audio Description.
- Check your country. Licensing and accessibility tracks can differ by territory, so a title available to another viewer may not be available to you.
- Check the playback device and app. A track can exist for a title but remain unavailable in a particular TV app, mobile app or older device.
The safest test is to open the title’s details page and then open the playback track menu during the first minute. If both a caption option and an AD audio option appear, you can select them before continuing.
PBS Video and POV: a strong starting point for documentaries
PBS and its POV documentary program provide one of the clearest routes to documentary viewing with accessibility tracks. PBS still treats AD as a title-level feature, however: PBS Help says not every PBS or PBS KIDS video offers it and provides a filterable list of eligible videos.

- Look for the audio-description or AD indicator, or use PBS’s list of eligible videos.
- Confirm that the title is available in your country and on the device you plan to use.
- Start the documentary and open the audio or language controls to verify that an AD track is present.
For current device availability and the eligible-title list, use PBS Help’s Audio Description instructions.
Turn on AD in the PBS web player
- Start the video at PBS.org.
- Select the headphones icon in the player.
- Choose English AD (or another audio-description track offered for that title).
The headphones menu changes the audio track; it does not turn on captions.

Turn on AD on iPhone or iPad
- Start playback in the PBS app.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Select Languages.
- Choose the available AD track.
PBS device limitations
PBS currently says AD is not supported in its app on Android mobile, Amazon Fire, Android TV, Samsung TV or VIZIO SmartCast TV. PBS provides separate steps for Roku and Apple TV. These support statements can change, so check the live PBS Help page for your exact device before troubleshooting the title itself.
Turn on captions in PBS Video
- Start the documentary.
- Select CC in the lower-right corner of the player.
- Choose English or another offered caption language.
PBS also links from its captioning help page to appearance settings. Device-specific PBS apps may place the CC control in a different menu.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use POV to discover independent documentaries
POV describes itself as the original home for independent documentaries on PBS. Its How to Watch page says new episodes premiere Mondays at 10 p.m. with same-day streaming at pbs.org and in the PBS App, subject to local listings. It also says POV documentaries are available on demand across station-branded PBS platforms. The page reports standard closed captioning and, through a partnership with DiCapta, real-time audio interpretations for audiences with sensory disabilities. Because schedules and title-level support can change, verify the individual documentary’s playback tracks rather than treating the program description as a guarantee for every episode.
How to watch with captions and AD on Netflix
Netflix presents both controls in the playback language menu, but availability remains title-specific. Netflix says audio description is available for most Netflix originals and many other shows and movies, not every title or every season and episode.
Select audio description
- Start the documentary or episode.
- Open Audio & Subtitles in the playback controls. On a television, you may need to press the remote’s select, up or down button first to reveal the controls.
- Choose an audio option labeled Audio Description.
- Resume playback and listen for the narration during visual-only moments.
Netflix describes AD as optional narration of actions, expressions, costumes, settings and scene changes. If the label is absent, that exact title, episode, language or device combination does not currently expose an AD track.
Select captions or subtitles
- Open Audio & Subtitles while the documentary is playing.
- Choose an offered caption or subtitle language.
- Keep the audio-description selection active while choosing the text track if the player allows both selections at once.
Netflix says language choices depend on the title. It distinguishes subtitles, which generally render spoken dialogue, from closed captions, which include dialogue and descriptions of sounds. Caption appearance can be customized in supported contexts. The relevant guidance is in Netflix’s subtitles and audio-language help and its accessibility settings guide.

Find Netflix titles that advertise AD
Netflix says you can search for titles with audio description or look for the AD badge on a title details page. Treat that badge as a discovery aid, then check the episode and language in the player because a series can have different tracks by season or episode. Netflix’s full explanation is at Audio Description for shows and movies.
Downloaded Netflix titles
If a downloaded documentary does not show a track after you enable the relevant device setting, Netflix says you may need to delete the existing download and download the title again. Streaming the title instead can also help you determine whether the issue is specific to the stored copy.
How to watch with captions and AD on Prime Video
Prime Video makes the track choices during supported playback. Its help pages caution that available accessibility features depend on the device.
Select audio description
- Start the documentary.
- Open the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon. On some platforms, a separate audio control appears.
- Open the audio-track list.
- Choose the track whose name includes [Audio Descriptions] or an equivalent audio-description label.
Prime Video says many titles offer subtitles, alternative audio tracks, audio description or a combination of these, but the exact feature range varies by device. See Prime Video’s alternative-audio and audio-description instructions.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
- Reveal controls. Tap the video, move the pointer, or press a remote button.
- Open captions or subtitles. Select the language you want and confirm that text appears.
- Open audio or language. Do not search only in the CC menu; AD is an audio track.
- Choose the AD label. It may read Audio Description, AD, English AD, Descriptive Video Service or include “[Audio Descriptions]”.
- Check both at once. Let the documentary play through a scene with visible action and spoken dialogue to confirm that captions and narration are active.
On phones and tablets, the controls are often behind a three-dot, speech-bubble, headphones or language button. On televisions and streaming boxes, press the select or directional button while the video is playing. If the menu still does not appear, exit full-screen mode or restart playback; some apps hide track controls until the video is actively running.
How to find a documentary that has both features
Use this workflow before committing to a long film:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start with documentary-focused catalogs. POV is a useful PBS discovery route, while PBS’s eligible-video list helps narrow titles with AD.
- Search the service for the title. On Netflix, use audio-description search terms or the AD badge; on other services, open the title page and inspect its audio and caption information.
- Open the exact episode. Do not stop at a series landing page.
- Check the language pair. A documentary may have English captions but AD in another language, or captions without AD.
- Test on the intended device. A browser may expose a track that a smart-TV app does not.
- Save the result only after testing playback. Catalog metadata can be incomplete or change when rights expire.
This approach prevents a common mistake: finding a service that supports AD in general and assuming the particular documentary does too.

The title does not have an AD track
Services publish availability at title, season, episode and language level. Check another episode or a different documentary instead of repeatedly reopening the same menu.
Your device or app does not support the track
PBS documents device-specific gaps, and Prime Video explicitly says supported features depend on the device. Try the service in a current web browser or a supported alternate device, then compare the menus.
You are looking in the captions menu
Captions are text; AD is audio. Open the separate audio, language or headphones control.

The controls are hidden
Tap the screen, move the pointer or press a remote button while playback is active. Some players hide all track controls until interaction.
The label uses different wording
Look for Audio Description, AD, English AD, Descriptive Video Service or “[Audio Descriptions]”. Do not reject a track because it does not use the exact words “audio description.”
A download has stale settings
For Netflix downloads, delete the downloaded title and download it again after changing the relevant device setting, as Netflix recommends.
The track disappeared after a catalog change
Accessibility tracks can change with licensing, localization and app updates. Recheck the title page and the service’s current help documentation rather than relying on an old screenshot or a previous viewing session.
How to compare services for your own viewing
No service can be ranked universally from the available guidance because the decisive variables are your country, documentary, language and device. Compare the four items below for the title you actually want.
Quick Recap
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Country availability | Is the documentary licensed in your country? | A title or track available elsewhere may not appear in your catalog. |
| Exact title and episode | Do both captions and AD appear for this film, season or episode? | Feature availability is not automatically service-wide. |
| Language | Are the caption language and AD language the ones you need? | Titles can offer different combinations of text and audio languages. |
| Device support | Can your browser, phone, TV app or streaming box select both tracks? | A supported title can still lack a menu on an unsupported device. |
| Caption legibility | Can you change size, color or appearance? | Readable text is part of a usable viewing setup, especially on a television or at a distance. |
Make the viewing comfortable and reliable
- Test the first few minutes before settling in, especially for a live premiere or a newly added title.
- Keep captions and AD enabled independently; turning one on does not automatically activate the other.
- Use the service’s caption appearance controls where available to adjust size, color or contrast.
- If a TV app lacks a track, try the same title in a supported browser or mobile app, subject to the service’s device limitations.
- For scheduled POV premieres, check local listings because the advertised Monday 10 p.m. time is schedule-sensitive.
Quick checklist
- Exact documentary and episode confirmed.
- Country and language availability checked.
- Caption or subtitle track selected.
- Separate Audio Description, AD or equivalent audio track selected.
- Playback device confirmed as supported.
- Both features tested during an actual scene.
