The most dependable method is a compatible video player and a legally obtained 3D file in a layout such as side-by-side (SBS) or top-and-bottom (TAB/OU). Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ are better treated as ways to watch ordinary 2D movies on a virtual screen; YouTube VR also has purpose-made VR and stereoscopic videos. A large cinema screen in VR is not, by itself, 3D.
“Oculus” is the former consumer brand; the headset is now called Meta Quest 2. App availability and menus can change, and many of the approaches below also work on Quest 3 or 3S, though codec support differs.
Choose the right way to watch
| Your goal | Good starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Watch an ordinary streaming movie on a big virtual screen | Meta Quest Browser or a supported streaming app | Usually 2D, with service and browser limits |
| Watch a personal stereoscopic 3D movie file | SKYBOX VR or DeoVR | You need a compatible, legally obtained file and the correct stereo setting |
| Watch with friends or share a computer screen | Bigscreen | Rentals and shared local playback have per-viewer requirements |
| Watch VR180 or 360° creator video | YouTube VR or a dedicated VR video player | Video quality and whether it is stereoscopic depend on the individual video |
What makes a movie 3D?
A 2D movie displayed on a huge virtual cinema screen remains a single flat image. A stereoscopic 3D movie supplies different images for the left and right eyes; the headset presents one to each eye to create a sense of depth.
Common stereo layouts
- Side-by-side (SBS): The two eye images sit next to each other. A player must separate them and assign them to the correct eyes.
- Top-and-bottom, over-under, or TAB/OU: The eye images are stacked vertically. Choose this layout when the file is arranged that way.
- Full-SBS and half-SBS: These describe how much horizontal image detail each eye receives in a side-by-side file. Full-SBS preserves more horizontal detail but takes more storage and bandwidth; the player and display settings still matter.
- VR180 3D: An immersive, forward-facing hemispherical video designed for headset viewing. It is not the same presentation as a conventional 3D feature on a cinema screen.
- 360° video: Surrounding video that may be monoscopic or stereoscopic. A 360° label alone does not guarantee 3D depth.
- MVC: A stereoscopic format associated with Blu-ray 3D. Playback depends on the player and the specific file; do not assume a Quest app can directly play every disc-derived file.
Containers such as MP4 and MKV are wrappers, not guarantees of compatibility. DeoVR lists Quest-side support for containers including MP4, MKV, WebM, MPG, M4V, and M3U8, and codecs including H.264, HEVC/H.265, VP8, and VP9. Its format information identifies AV1 support for Quest 3/3S, not Quest 2. App support does not guarantee smooth playback at every resolution or bitrate. See DeoVR’s format and codec list and DeoVR’s app documentation.

Watch streaming services on a virtual screen
For regular streaming, put on the headset, open the service’s supported Quest app or the Meta Quest Browser, sign in, play a title, and use full-screen mode if available. Resize or reposition the virtual screen to suit your viewing position. This creates a private large-screen experience, not automatic stereoscopic playback.
Netflix
- Open Meta Quest Browser.
- Go to netflix.com, select Sign In, and choose a profile.
- Play a title and enter full-screen mode if available.
Netflix lists Quest 2 as supported through the Quest Browser and states playback can reach HD/1080p. That is streaming quality information, not evidence of a general Netflix 3D-movie catalog on Quest. See Netflix’s Quest support page.
Prime Video
Use the supported Prime Video experience on your Quest and sign in. Amazon lists Meta Quest support at up to HD video and up to 5.1 audio. Its device information does not establish Prime Video on Quest as a general stereoscopic 3D service. Catalog, quality, ads, subtitles, and features can vary by country, title, subscription, and app version. See Amazon’s supported-device information.

Disney+
Disney announced a Quest app for Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S in the United States on December 15, 2025, describing the experience as 2D streaming. The announcement said international availability would follow in early 2026; check the app store and Disney’s current device information for your territory. Do not confuse Quest playback with Disney’s 3D catalog or its 3D playback on another platform. See Disney’s Meta Quest announcement and its device-support listing.
YouTube and YouTube VR
YouTube VR supports Quest 2, and YouTube says purchased movies can play at up to 4K on Quest. The platform also carries VR180, 360°, and stereoscopic videos. These specially authored videos are distinct from ordinary 2D movies; inspect the individual video and its playback options rather than assuming every YouTube movie is 3D. See YouTube’s Quest support information.
Play a 3D movie file with a Quest video player
Start with a file you created, purchased, licensed, or otherwise have permission to play. Install a player that explicitly supports the file’s format, then choose the correct stereo layout. SKYBOX VR and DeoVR are two options; Bigscreen is better suited to social viewing and supported rentals.

SKYBOX VR
SKYBOX is a general-purpose option for local, network, 3D, and VR video with virtual cinema environments. Developer discussions describe network playback, including SMB/DLNA, and USB support in Quest versions, but feature availability can depend on the app version and headset setup. Check the current listing and app before relying on a particular connection method. Relevant developer discussions: 3D playback and network use and USB support discussion.
- Install SKYBOX from the Meta Horizon Store and open it.
- Choose a source: headset storage, a connected computer, a network source such as SMB/DLNA, or USB if the current app and setup support it.
- Open the movie. If it appears as two images or otherwise looks wrong, open the playback or 3D controls; exact labels can vary by version.
- Select SBS for side-by-side video, TAB/OU for top-and-bottom, or 2D if the movie is a single image.
- Adjust the screen size, position, curvature, and environment.
DeoVR
DeoVR supports Quest 2 and documents a range of video formats. It is useful when you need control over 3D/VR presentation or want to play local, network, or web-hosted media. It is a player and content platform, not proof that a particular commercial film is licensed for playback. Consult its app documentation and format list; update the app if it is outdated.
- Install and open DeoVR from the Meta Horizon Store.
- Choose a local, network, or web source and open the video.
- Set the projection and stereo layout to match the file. Switch between SBS and OU/TAB if the eyes are not being separated properly.
- If depth looks reversed, use an eye-swap or invert-stereo option if the player provides one.
- If playback stutters, try a lower-bitrate version, local playback, or a less congested network.
Bigscreen
Bigscreen is a strong choice for social cinema, PC remote desktop, local video playback, and selected studio-backed 2D and 3D movie rentals. Bigscreen says the app is free on Meta Quest. For synchronized local-file viewing, every participant needs the same file; for a rental, each viewer must rent the movie. Titles and rental availability vary. See Bigscreen’s software page.

Transfer or stream a file to Quest 2
Copy it over USB
- Connect Quest 2 to a computer with a USB-C cable that supports data; some cables are charge-only.
- Put on the headset and accept the file-access prompt if it appears.
- On the computer, open the Quest’s internal storage and copy the movie into a clearly named folder, such as
Moviesor3D Movies. - Safely disconnect, open the video player, and browse local storage.
Prompts and storage paths can change with Horizon OS updates, so update the headset and player if the computer does not recognize the device.
Stream over your home network
- Connect the Quest and the computer or NAS to the same network.
- Enable a media server or file-sharing method that your chosen player supports, such as SMB or DLNA/UPnP where available.
- In the Quest player, select the matching network source and enter credentials if requested.
- If video buffers, reduce bitrate or network load, or use a more reliable connection. Protocol support varies by app; “network playback” is not one universal setup.
Stream from a PC
Bigscreen Remote Desktop or another suitable PC-streaming workflow can help when a file is too large for headset storage, the computer has better codec support, or the content is playing on a desktop app or browser. This adds reliance on the computer, network, and streaming software; compression or latency may affect playback, and DRM can result in a black screen. Do not try to bypass DRM.

| Format or route | What it means | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| SBS | Left- and right-eye images are arranged horizontally | Select SBS in the player; full-SBS needs more storage and bandwidth than half-SBS |
| TAB/OU | Eye images are stacked vertically | Select top-and-bottom/over-under in the player |
| VR180 | Forward-facing immersive video, often stereoscopic | Use a player or service that recognizes the intended projection |
| 360° | Video surrounds the viewer | It may be monoscopic or stereoscopic; the label alone does not indicate depth |
| MVC | A stereoscopic format associated with Blu-ray 3D | Support depends on the player and file; do not assume direct disc playback |
| DeoVR streaming or files | Published support includes MP4, MKV, WebM, MPG, M4V, M3U8 and several codecs | App-specific support is not a guarantee for every bitrate, firmware, or player; DeoVR lists AV1 for Quest 3/3S, not Quest 2 |
Fix common playback problems
| What you see | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Two complete images side by side | The player is treating SBS as 2D | Choose SBS 3D |
| Two images stacked vertically | The player is in 2D or using the wrong layout | Choose OU/TAB |
| Cross-eyed image or reversed depth | Left and right channels are swapped | Use eye-swap/invert-stereo if available |
| Stretched picture | Wrong aspect ratio or projection | Choose the intended aspect ratio or projection |
| Weak or absent depth despite a 3D filename | Wrong layout, poor encode, or a mislabeled/2D file | Check the stereo setting and file information; test another confirmed stereoscopic file |
| Stuttering playback | Bitrate exceeds the decoder or network’s capacity | Try local playback, reduce bitrate, or use a more reliable network or PC connection |
| No sound | Unsupported audio codec or player limitation | Try a version with a widely supported audio format such as AAC, provided you have permission to make or use it |
| Streaming service shows a black screen | DRM or browser/app limitation | Use the service’s supported app or browser path; do not bypass DRM |
| Subtitles are missing | Unsupported subtitle format or subtitles are not selected | Check player subtitle settings or use a supported external subtitle file |
Know the limits of Quest 2
Quest 2 is older hardware than Quest 3 and 3S, and newer codecs or very high-resolution files may work on newer models but not on Quest 2. A “4K” file label does not mean the headset displays a 4K image to each eye. Perceived clarity depends on the headset display and optics as well as the source, stereo layout, bitrate, codec, and player. High-bitrate, HEVC, AV1, MVC, and 4K-or-higher playback should be treated as player- and encode-dependent, not guaranteed by the filename.

Streaming avoids file transfers and storage use, but depends on the service catalog, region, Wi-Fi, and DRM. Local files can work offline and give more control over stereo layout and subtitles, but require compatible media and storage. Network playback avoids filling the headset while adding server and Wi-Fi requirements. Quest is convenient for private, portable viewing; comfort and clarity are personal considerations during a feature-length session.
Use media you have permission to play
Use files you created, purchased, licensed, or otherwise have permission to play. A player’s ability to open a file does not establish that the file was legally obtained. Do not use unauthorized downloads or DRM circumvention. Screen-sharing a commercial movie may also conflict with a streaming service’s terms; Bigscreen’s per-viewer rental and file requirements provide a clearer route for supported group viewing.
