How to Volunteer With Migrant and Refugee Organizations in Denver

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to volunteer with migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, or immigrants in Denver is to choose a specific program on an organization’s official site, confirm that it is currently accepting volunteers, and complete that program’s own orientation, application, training, and screening. There is no single Denver-wide application. A one-time apartment setup, a weekly family-mentoring team, a detention visit, and a Saturday food-pantry shift are different forms of service with different requirements.

Use the guide below to match your available time, preferred population, transportation and language skills, and willingness to undergo screening with a realistic role. Program pages can remain online after openings change, so treat the linked organization page as the starting point and verify the current status before making plans.

Choose the kind of service you want to provide

Denver programs generally fall into four categories. Relationship-building programs help newly arrived refugee families practice English, learn transportation and budgeting, prepare for employment, and become comfortable in their neighborhoods. Detention and post-release programs support asylum seekers and other newcomers who may be held in immigration detention or released with immediate practical needs. Community-service programs provide food and other assistance through a pantry or immigrant center. Emergency shelter volunteering is a separate, rapidly changing track that must be checked through current city or state listings.

Service focus Denver examples Typical structure What to verify before applying
Family integration and mentoring African Community Center (ACC), Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM), Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS) One-time tasks or a sustained individual/family or team relationship Commitment length, team size, orientation, background check, transportation duties
Detention and post-release support Casa de Paz Letter writing, detention visits, and assistance after release Current role descriptions, screening, training, age and scheduling rules
Food and community services Denver Inner City Parish (DICP) Regular Saturday pantry shifts, one-time events, or skill-based help Current shift calendar and needs at the Immigrant Center
Emergency migrant shelters City of Denver and Colorado volunteer listings Medical and non-medical shelter assignments when activated Whether shifts are currently open, the current sign-up portal, location, and background-check process

Start with ACC’s orientation and role menu

ACC accepts volunteers who live in the greater Denver metro area. Its onboarding sequence is deliberately staged:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Complete the self-led online general orientation, which ACC says takes about one hour, at ACC’s orientation page.
  2. Use the course link to schedule a new-volunteer chat with the Community Engagement Manager.
  3. Submit the volunteer application.
  4. Complete the required background check.

Some specialized assignments require additional training after the orientation and chat. Do not assume that completing the general course qualifies you for every role.

One-time and group assignments

ACC lists apartment setups, bus training, and transportation to appointments as ways to help for a limited period or a single need. Workplace volunteer days and the “Nest a Home” project are designed for groups. Confirm the next available date and the number of people the project can accommodate on ACC’s volunteer roles page.

First Friends

First Friends combines friendship, conversational English, and outings that help a newcomer learn and use the community. ACC describes a minimum three-month commitment. An individual or a family can participate, so this is an option when you want a continuing relationship without assembling a large team.

Co-sponsorship

ACC’s co-sponsorship model pairs a refugee family with at least seven trained volunteers for nine months. The group takes on defined financial contributions, in-kind donations, and other settlement support. Because the model involves a large team and a long commitment, form your group and understand the financial and practical responsibilities before applying.

Build a mentoring team through LFSRM

Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM) uses its Cultural Mentoring and Exchange Program to pair three to six volunteers with a newly arrived refugee family. Mentors may practice English, help create a household budget, explain public transportation, prepare someone for employment, and support the practical work of settling into the community. LFSRM also lists English Conversation Circles for informal speaking and listening practice.

Required orientation sequence

The Denver signup route has two learning stages:

  1. Take the self-paced Refugee 101 course, which LFSRM describes as approximately 90 minutes.
  2. Attend the two-hour interactive training session.
  3. After those sessions, receive the volunteer application and background-check link and complete both as directed.

Find the current dates and registration instructions on LFSRM’s Denver volunteer signup page. Role descriptions and the organization’s current needs are on LFSRM’s Denver refugee volunteer page.

Goods and group activities

If you want to contribute material support or organize a group activity rather than mentor a family, LFSRM lists hygiene and welcome baskets, baby baskets, and apartment bins. It also links to an Amazon wish list and mentions store gift cards. Needs change as families arrive, so use the current list or contact LFSRM before purchasing anything. A donation of an item is not a substitute for completing volunteer screening when a role requires it.

Join JFS only if you have a formed team

Jewish Family Service of Colorado’s Refugee Resettlement Support Teams program currently says it is accepting already formed groups of two to six volunteers. A team lead submits one application for the group. The team may help with public transportation, grocery shopping, English tutoring, and neighborhood orientation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

JFS describes an approximate commitment of three to five hours per week for around six months. Matching can take time after vetting and training, so an approved team should not expect an immediate family placement.

JFS eligibility and documents

  • A background check is required.
  • Drivers must provide a driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Family members, including children, may participate with a parent or guardian; the parents go through the required vetting.

Review the current acceptance status and application instructions at JFS’s refugee support team page. If you are alone and cannot form a group of two to six, choose a program that explicitly accepts individual volunteers instead of submitting an unsuitable application.

Check IRC Denver’s live needs before committing

The International Rescue Committee’s Denver office serves refugees, asylees, survivors of trafficking and torture, and immigrants seeking citizenship. Its process starts with volunteer orientation. After orientation, applicants receive an online application and indicate the role they want. IRC reviews applications against current needs, interviews suitable applicants, requires a background check, and assigns a supervisor to train volunteers who clear the process.

IRC asks for a $50 background-check donation if an applicant’s finances allow. Volunteers must be at least 18. The Denver information page says most opportunities occur on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the broader opportunities page says most positions require three to six months and at least monthly participation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the listing may change

IRC explicitly says its opportunities evolve with policy and funding conditions. A role described on a general page may therefore be paused, filled, or redesigned. Use IRC’s evolving-opportunities page and the local information at IRC Denver as the next step, rather than treating an older description as proof of an open position. Follow the current portal or local contact instructions shown on those pages.

Support detained and newly released people through Casa de Paz

Casa de Paz welcomes recently released newcomers, asylum seekers, and immigrants. It describes three distinct volunteer activities: writing to people detained across the United States, visiting people detained at the Aurora facility, and assisting people after release.

Those activities involve different settings and boundaries. Read the current volunteer information at Casa de Paz before applying. The overview does not specify one universal application sequence, screening standard, or time commitment for every role, so do not infer those details from another organization’s process. Ask Casa de Paz which orientation, background check, training, scheduling, and confidentiality rules apply to the assignment you select.

Serve neighbors at Denver Inner City Parish

Denver Inner City Parish (DICP) offers regular Saturday food-pantry shifts, one-time events, and skill-based support such as marketing and public relations. Pantry volunteers sort and unload food, organize and restock, help neighbors while they shop, and clean. DICP says prior volunteer experience is not required for pantry shifts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DICP also lists an Immigrant Center that operates by appointment. Contact DICP through its volunteer page to ask about current intake and volunteer needs rather than arriving without an appointment. The page attributes this sentence to Helen Dyer: “Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action.”

Treat city shelter opportunities as time-sensitive

A Colorado Nonprofit Association FAQ reproduces a City of Denver call for volunteers at emergency migrant shelters. It describes medical and non-medical assignments, a state volunteer sign-up portal, and a background check for shelter volunteers.

The same page includes a donation-site schedule tied to “the month of January” without a current year. That undated schedule is not evidence that shifts or donation sites are open now. Use the Colorado Nonprofit Association FAQ as a lead, then verify the active City of Denver or Colorado Volunteer Mobilizer listing for the current dates, locations, eligibility, and registration link.

Use this application plan

  1. Define your boundary. Decide whether you want a one-time assignment, a recurring shift, a family relationship, detention-related work, or emergency shelter service. Also note whether you can reliably travel on weekday daytime, Saturday, or another schedule.
  2. Choose the population and setting. Refugee resettlement, asylum-seeker support, immigrant services, detention visits, and pantry work require different expectations. Select the organization whose stated population matches the work you want to do.
  3. Read the official role page. Check the current opening, location, minimum age, team-size rule, transportation expectations, and commitment before registering for training.
  4. Complete the organization’s own orientation. ACC, LFSRM, IRC, and other programs do not share a universal training. A course completed for one organization does not replace another organization’s orientation.
  5. Prepare screening documents. Depending on the role, you may need an application, background check, interview, driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, or a parent/guardian’s participation. Provide only what the organization requests through its official process.
  6. State your actual availability. Give a realistic schedule and transportation limit. A smaller commitment you can keep is more useful than accepting a placement you cannot sustain.
  7. Wait for the match or supervisor. Family programs may need to vet, train, and match volunteers before assigning a household. Do not purchase supplies, promise a family a start date, or advertise an opening until the organization confirms it.
  8. Ask about boundaries and escalation. Before your first shift or visit, learn whom to contact about safety, interpretation, transportation problems, urgent needs, confidentiality, and missed appointments.

How to make a useful first contact

A concise message helps staff place you efficiently. Include the program you are asking about, whether you are applying alone or with a team, your city or metro-area location, your age when relevant, your available days and duration, language or professional skills, access to a car, and any requirement you already know you cannot meet. Ask whether the role is currently accepting applicants and what the next official step is.

For a group, name the team lead and list the number of participants before asking about a placement. For driving-related work, say whether you hold a current license and auto insurance. For detention or post-release work, ask specifically about the role’s training and boundaries rather than assuming that family-mentoring rules apply.

When donating goods makes sense

Goods can fill immediate needs, but they should remain secondary to the volunteer role you intend to provide. LFSRM’s hygiene, baby, and apartment-basket lists are examples of organization-directed material support. Use the current wish list or ask what is needed before buying. Do not assume that an item purchased through a third-party listing is a donation unless the organization itself says so.

For shelter or pantry operations, needs can change quickly with arrivals and inventory. A current request from the operating organization is more useful than a generic collection drive copied from an undated schedule.

Keep openings and terminology current

“Refugee,” “asylee,” “asylum seeker,” “immigrant,” and “migrant” describe different legal or program contexts. Use the population name supplied by the organization for the role you are discussing; do not imply that every program serves every category.

Finally, recheck the official page immediately before applying. IRC specifically describes changing opportunities, JFS currently limits the cited team program to formed groups, and the city shelter information reproduced by the Colorado Nonprofit Association includes an undated January schedule. A live confirmation protects your time and prevents staff from receiving applications for a program that is no longer open.

Make a commitment you can keep

Denver has a place for both a single Saturday and a nine-month team effort, but the right choice depends on the program’s population, schedule, training, and screening rather than on the label “volunteer.” Start with one official role, complete its requirements, and follow the organization’s guidance about contact, confidentiality, transportation, and material support. That approach turns an offer of help into dependable service for newcomers.
